Choose based on where the stream runs and who will monitor and recover it: OBS depends on your computer and connection, FFmpeg leaves server operations to you, while a managed service handles more of the continuous-stream workflow.
Gyre alternatives at a glance
| Option | Where it runs | Best fit | Main operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Provider cloud | Creators who want an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos without keeping a computer running | Compare current storage and service limits before choosing; StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. |
| OBS Studio | Your computer | People who want local control, media sources, or hands-on production | The computer and internet connection must remain available while streaming. |
| FFmpeg on a VPS or server | A server you administer | Technically confident operators who want to manage the streaming process themselves | You are responsible for setup, monitoring, and process recovery; loop points can also need attention. |
| Gyre | Provider cloud | People comparing cloud services specifically for prerecorded 24/7 YouTube streams | Check current service features and limits directly with the provider. |
YouTube’s encoder directory identifies OBS as no-charge open-source streaming software and Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded streams. The directory also lists tools such as Upstream and Restream, but a directory listing alone does not establish that a tool supports unattended looping of video files. Confirm that capability before selecting one.
How to choose the right alternative
- Pick OBS if you prefer to control the scene and stream from a computer you can keep running. OBS’s official Media Sources documentation explains how to add media files to a scene.
- Pick FFmpeg on a VPS if you are comfortable administering a server and taking responsibility for restarting and monitoring the stream process.
- Compare cloud looping services if you do not want your home computer to be the thing keeping the broadcast alive. Check each provider’s current file, storage, stream, scheduling, and recovery limits.
- Consider production needs before deciding: local OBS may suit a workflow needing hands-on overlays, while a file-looping service is aimed at playing uploaded videos continuously.
These are workflow distinctions, not a performance ranking. The available source material establishes no independent head-to-head figures for uptime, value, audience growth, or outcomes.
OBS Studio: run a video loop from your computer
OBS is the local-control route. The basic approach is to add a media source to a scene, configure the file to loop, and start the YouTube broadcast. For multiple videos, the practical guide describes using a VLC video source as a playlist. Exact controls may vary with the OBS version, so check the current application labels and documentation for your installation.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Prepare your YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and retrieve its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it. Use YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the exact interface and stream settings.
- Add the video in OBS. Create or select a scene, add a Media Source, and choose the video file. Enable looping in the source’s properties if you want that single file to repeat.
- Build a playlist if needed. Add a VLC Video Source and select the files you want in its playlist. Confirm the order and loop behavior before going live.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Enter the stream key in OBS’s streaming settings, then start streaming. In YouTube Studio, confirm that the incoming stream appears and use the available controls to start the live broadcast.
- Keep the system operating. Leave OBS running, keep the computer awake, and maintain a reliable network connection. A local stream stops if the machine or connection stops sending it.
Before you leave the stream unattended
- Preview the scene and verify that the intended video and audio are playing.
- Check YouTube Studio for an incoming signal and any warnings before starting the broadcast.
- Disable sleep or automatic shutdown for the streaming session, and consider what will happen if the network or computer restarts.
- Test a playlist transition. The cited guide recommends VLC playlists for multiple files, but no specific playlist, file, or OBS version was tested for this article.
FFmpeg on a VPS: a self-managed server approach
FFmpeg can send a video file repeatedly to YouTube from a VPS or other server. The StreamNeo guide gives an example using FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option for an indefinite loop. Treat that as guide-level advice, not a verified command for your specific files, server, or FFmpeg version: the right input, output, encoding, and YouTube settings depend on the media and server environment.
- Provision and prepare the server. Choose a VPS with enough network capacity for the stream and install an appropriate FFmpeg build. Confirm that the server can read the video and reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
- Check your source media. Confirm that the file plays correctly and that its video and audio formats can be sent in your chosen workflow. The cited guide recommends preparing a compatible source file; it does not establish one universal format or setting for every case.
- Configure the stream destination. Use YouTube’s current encoder instructions to identify the ingest endpoint and apply your stream key securely. Avoid embedding a key in a publicly visible script or sharing logs that expose it.
- Run and observe the FFmpeg process. The guide’s looping example uses
-stream_loop -1; consult the FFmpeg documentation and validate the complete command for your file and output method before relying on it. - Provide monitoring and recovery. Arrange a way to detect a stopped process and restart it, and check YouTube Studio for the incoming signal. A VPS does not automatically remove the need to manage the streaming process.
The practical guide also flags possible timestamp glitches when FFmpeg copies media at a loop point. This is a potential issue to check in your own stream, not a guaranteed failure. Test transitions and monitor the output before treating a setup as unattended.

Rights, YouTube rules, and monetization
The streaming method does not determine whether you have permission to broadcast a video or whether a channel qualifies for monetization. Use content you own or are licensed to use, avoid presenting prerecorded material in a misleading way, and check YouTube’s current policies for live streams, copyright, and monetization eligibility. Monetization depends on YouTube’s review and rules; no streaming tool can guarantee it.

YouTube does not receive a signal
- OBS: check the selected streaming service and stream key, confirm OBS is actively streaming, and look for an incoming signal in YouTube Studio.
- FFmpeg: inspect the process output and server connectivity, then verify the destination and key against YouTube’s current encoder instructions.
- Cloud provider: verify the uploaded file or playlist, stream key, and live status in the provider’s controls.
The stream stops after running for a while
- OBS: check whether the computer slept, OBS closed, or the home connection failed.
- FFmpeg: check whether the process exited or the server lost connectivity; configure monitoring and recovery under your control.
- Managed service: check the provider’s status and current recovery behavior, then confirm YouTube still shows the stream as live.
A loop transition glitches
Check the file’s playback and the transition point. The StreamNeo guide identifies possible FFmpeg timestamp issues when media is copied at a loop point; test the exact source and command you intend to use rather than assuming every file will behave alike.

A playlist does not play as expected
In OBS, confirm the VLC source contains the intended files in the intended order and that the source’s playback options match your goal. For a cloud service, verify the playlist and its schedule in that provider’s current interface.
Costs and practical trade-offs
OBS is listed by YouTube as no-charge open-source software, but the local route still relies on a powered computer and an active connection. A VPS route adds server and administration costs; the actual total depends on your provider and configuration. Cloud services charge according to their own current plans and limits. Provider-authored prices and features can change, so compare current terms directly rather than treating old examples as universal costs.
