No Doubt’s Sphere production showed Gwen Stefani and bassist Tony Kanal on a romantic dinner date and slow-dancing during “Simple Kind of Life.” The scene was part of the concert’s visuals; it is not evidence that the former couple has rekindled their relationship. Rolling Stone’s May 2026 report describes Kanal talking instead about the pair’s long friendship and creative partnership. It does not establish a broad fan reaction to the sequence.
What happened during “Simple Kind of Life”?
During No Doubt’s Sphere show, concert visuals depicted Stefani and Kanal sharing a dinner date and slow-dancing while the band performed “Simple Kind of Life,” according to Rolling Stone’s May 9, 2026 report. The romantic imagery was staged as part of the show. The report does not say the pair were on a real date or that they had resumed a romantic relationship.

The scene drew on the song’s intimate tone and the performers’ shared past, but a concert visual cannot establish what either person privately feels. Kanal’s own comments in the report frame their connection as friendship and collaboration.
What has Tony Kanal said about his relationship with Stefani?
Kanal told Rolling Stone: “There’s a really strong underlying friendship we’ve shared for 40 years.” He also described how their relationship changed over time: “From being boyfriend and girlfriend to becoming creative partners, there’s just something really special with the two of us.”

Onstage, he said, “When we’re onstage, there’s a comfort you only get with time and depth of relationship.” These remarks describe a bond shaped by years of working together; they do not announce a reunion as a couple.
How did the former couple become bandmates and collaborators?
Stefani and Kanal dated during No Doubt’s early years. NYLON’s April 2024 interview places Kanal as Stefani’s boyfriend when she sang backup and he played bass. Their romantic relationship ended, but they continued making music together. Rolling Stone describes their path as one from lovers to exes, then friends and collaborators.

No Doubt reunited at Coachella in 2024. Before that performance, Stefani spoke to NYLON about plans to play together again and said the band had not yet spent much time together in person. Those comments belong to the lead-up to Coachella, not a description of the group’s later Sphere relationship.
Stefani is married to Blake Shelton, and Kanal is married to Erin, as Rolling Stone notes. The Sphere sequence does not alter those facts or establish a romantic development between Stefani and Kanal.

What was the Sphere show, and what songs did No Doubt play?
The Sphere engagement followed No Doubt’s 2024 Coachella reunion. The Associated Press announced six May 2026 dates in October 2025; Rolling Stone’s later report covered the performed run and said it was scheduled to wrap June 13. The earlier six-date announcement was not the final reported count: Rolling Stone Australia described an 18-date run.
Rolling Stone reported that the opening song was “Tragic Kingdom,” the title track of the band’s 1995 breakout album. Its account also named “Ex-Girlfriend,” “Simple Kind of Life,” “Don’t Speak” and “Just a Girl” among the set. The report described a nearly two-hour performance for about 20,000 concertgoers; that attendance figure is not a measure of how viewers responded to any one visual.

When the Sphere dates were announced, Stefani said in an AP statement: “Doing it with No Doubt feels like going back in time to relive our history, while also creating something new in a way we never could have imagined.” The statement describes the band’s approach to the show, not the meaning of the specific dinner-and-dance scene.

The available reporting does not document a representative fan response to the romantic visuals. It provides no verified consensus, count of reactions or attributable collection of audience comments about that sequence. It is therefore more accurate to describe what the production showed and what Kanal said than to claim that “fans” reacted in a particular way.
The distinction matters: a visually romantic moment can invite speculation, but without attributable reaction evidence it cannot support claims that the scene went viral, delighted fans as a group or signaled a real-life reunion.
