Gwen Shamblin Lara was a Tennessee dietitian and author who created the Christian weight-loss program Weigh Down, then founded Remnant Fellowship, a church built around her teachings. Her public legacy combines a popular self-help message about food and faith with serious, disputed reporting about the church and its practices. She died in 2021 when a private plane crashed into Percy Priest Lake.

Who was Gwen Shamblin Lara?

Shamblin Lara (1955–2021) was a Tennessee religious leader whose career began in nutrition education and expanded into Christian publishing and church leadership. Her official biography describes her as a registered dietitian with a master’s degree in food and nutrition, and says she worked in public health and taught at the University of Memphis. Those career details come from the organization she founded.

Her public work took shape through two connected organizations: Weigh Down Ministries, which offered a faith-based approach to weight loss, and Remnant Fellowship, the Brentwood, Tennessee, church she founded in 1999. The first made her a widely known diet author; the second placed her at the center of a religious community that later faced sustained scrutiny.

What was the Weigh Down Diet?

Weigh Down Ministries says its classes began in Memphis and expanded in the early 1990s; Shamblin Lara’s official biography dates the program’s founding to 1992. Its stated approach paired attention to internal hunger cues with Christian teaching: participants were encouraged to eat ordinary foods, stop when satisfied, and seek spiritual fulfillment rather than use food for emotional comfort. This describes the ministry’s own account of the program, not independent evidence that it produces lasting weight loss or is clinically validated.

#1 Best Overall

Doubleday published Shamblin Lara’s book The Weigh Down Diet in 1997, according to Weigh Down Ministries. The ministry calls it a million-seller, a sales figure that is an institutional claim rather than an independently verified number here. The book remains a direct way to understand the ideas she promoted, but its presence in the historical record should not be mistaken for an endorsement of the method.

How did Weigh Down lead to Remnant Fellowship?

Shamblin Lara founded Remnant Fellowship in Brentwood in 1999, seven years after the date her official biography gives for Weigh Down’s founding. The two projects were related through her leadership and the movement’s spiritual teachings, but they were not the same thing: Weigh Down was a program and ministry, while Remnant was a church.

The church’s website describes its services and locations, but its present-day reach is not independently established by the reporting summarized here. The distinction matters when considering the movement’s scale: claims about the number of locations or participants should be attributed to the church rather than stated as independently verified facts.

Why did Remnant Fellowship become controversial?

NewsChannel 5 reported on disputes involving Remnant and Weigh Down over a period of years. The reporting includes allegations and accounts from specific former employees and members, as well as coverage of a criminal case involving church members. These matters should not be collapsed into a single claim about every member or treated as though allegations, reporting and institutional rebuttals have the same evidentiary status.

NewsChannel 5 investigations and follow-up reporting Reporting on the former-employee lawsuit, the Smith child-abuse case, mental-health practices and other questions. Attribute allegations and findings to the outlet; keep individual cases and reported practices distinct.
Michael Shamblin’s NewsChannel 5 interview, published nearly three years after the crash Gwen Shamblin Lara’s son and a former Remnant worship leader described estrangement and called the church a cult. A former member’s characterization, not a court or scholarly determination. “Cult” is contested language.
Religious-studies scholars quoted in Remnant’s response Remnant published favorable views from J. Gordon Melton and Donald A. Westbrook; Westbrook said his research did not lead him to regard the church as fundamentally other than a Bible-based Christian church. Named scholars’ views reproduced by an interested institution, not a neutral consensus or a substitute for other evidence.

The former-employee lawsuit

NewsChannel 5 reported that three former Weigh Down employees sued in 2000, alleging they had been fired for resisting efforts to impose Shamblin Lara’s religion in the workplace. The lawsuit was settled. A settlement is not a judicial finding that the allegations were true.

The Smith child-abuse case

In 2004, Remnant members Joseph and Sonya Smith were arrested in connection with the child-abuse death of their eight-year-old son, Josef. NewsChannel 5’s later reporting examined child discipline at Remnant and an internal recording in which Shamblin Lara praised the couple’s treatment of the boy. The criminal case involving the Smiths and reporting about church practices are distinct matters; this account does not establish that all members shared or followed the reported practices.

Reporting about mental health and other allegations

NewsChannel 5 reported that an investigation uncovered church demands that followers avoid psychiatric medication for mental illness. The outlet also reported that, in an interview, Shamblin Lara said she would be willing to lie to protect her church. These are claims about what the outlet reported and the interview it described; Remnant disputed aspects of the coverage and allegations.

What was The Way Down about?

The Way Down: God, Greed and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin is an HBO documentary series about Shamblin Lara and the movement she led, identified as such in NewsChannel 5’s reporting. Its title uses the word “cult,” but that is the documentary’s framing, not a definitive neutral classification. Remnant Fellowship rejected allegations in the series and published the favorable scholar statements described above. The sources summarized here do not establish where the series is currently available to stream.

How did Gwen Shamblin Lara die?

On May 29, 2021, a Cessna C501 crashed into Percy Priest Lake shortly after taking off from Smyrna-Rutherford County Airport in Tennessee. NewsChannel 5 reported that all seven people aboard died: Shamblin Lara, her husband Joe Lara, who was piloting, and five Remnant leaders. The account summarized here establishes the crash and its victims, but not its technical or probable cause.

What happened to her estate?

NewsChannel 5 reported that Shamblin Lara’s will left her estate to her children. Separately, Remnant Fellowship told the outlet that the family had donated approximately $10 million toward the church building and grounds, and that Gwen had donated Weigh Down Ministries, its proceeds and intellectual property. The will’s reported contents and the church’s statements about earlier donations are separate matters; neither should be used to imply the other.

How should her legacy be understood?

Shamblin Lara’s legacy is interpreted through different kinds of evidence: her ministry’s own account of a Christian approach to eating, investigative reporting on disputes and allegations, the church’s rebuttals, and a former member’s personal characterization. No single one of those perspectives resolves the contested description of Remnant Fellowship. A careful account keeps established events—such as the organizations’ founding dates and the 2021 crash—separate from allegations and opinions, and identifies whose account supports each disputed claim.
