ARTE lists it as a 2025 production and schedules it to be available from October 9, 2026. As of October 7, 2026, that date is still ahead, so the film is not yet listed as available to watch. Check ARTE’s listing on or after October 9; availability may depend on your territory.
Where can I watch the Gustave Fayet documentary?
ARTE is the broadcaster listing the film. Its English-language listing gives the title as Gustave Fayet: Dedicated to Art, identifies Nadège de Peganow as director, and states a scheduled availability date of October 9, 2026. The listing describes a 53-minute film made in France in 2025. Since the scheduled date is in the future as of October 7, 2026, check the ARTE listing after that date and confirm whether it is accessible where you live.
The documentary’s synopsis says it draws on a collection of more than 1,000 works. That is ARTE’s broad description of the collection behind the film; it is not the same count as the works selected for the Fondation Louis Vuitton exhibition announced for 2026–2027.
Who was Gustave Fayet?
Gustave Fayet (1865–1925) was a French collector, artist, designer, and entrepreneur. The Fondation Louis Vuitton presents him as an advocate for the avant-garde and describes collecting and making art as closely connected parts of his life. He was not simply an owner of celebrated paintings: he also worked in watercolor, ceramics, interior design, rugs, fabrics, wallpaper, and book illustration.

Collector and advocate
The Fondation describes Fayet as one of the early collectors of Vincent van Gogh. He exhibited Pablo Picasso and owned a Paris home containing a “museum” of nearly 200 works by Paul Gauguin. He was also a close friend and champion of Odilon Redon, whom he gave the opportunity to create a monumental decorative ensemble for the Abbaye de Fontfroide. These episodes show how Fayet’s role extended from acquiring art to supporting artists and bringing their work into new settings.
Artist and designer
Fayet’s own practice crossed the boundary between fine and decorative arts. His interests in interiors and materials sit alongside his painting and collecting, making the film’s focus on a large body of works a way into both sides of his career: what he gathered and what he created.

What was Gustave Fayet known for?
Fayet is chiefly associated with his support for modern artists, his substantial collections, and his activity as a maker and designer. The Fondation Louis Vuitton’s 2026–2027 exhibition announcement underscores the scale and variety of this story, but its figures describe a particular exhibition, not a definitive inventory of Fayet’s lifetime collection.
| Figure | What it refers to | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| More than 1,000 works | The collection on which the documentary draws | ARTE’s documentary listing; a broad collection description |
| 728 works and documents | The announced total across the exhibition’s two sections | Fondation Louis Vuitton’s 2026 exhibition announcement |
| More than 250 works | Works from Fayet’s collection included in the exhibition | Fondation Louis Vuitton’s 2026 exhibition announcement |
| 374 creations | Works made by Fayet included in the exhibition | Fondation Louis Vuitton’s 2026 exhibition announcement |
The counts have different scopes: the documentary listing refers broadly to a collection of more than 1,000 works, while the Fondation’s announcement counts the contents of a specific exhibition and distinguishes collected works from Fayet’s own creations. The cited institutional accounts do not provide an independent reconciliation of the totals.

The Fondation’s announced highlights include 10 paintings by Van Gogh, 78 works by Gauguin, and 86 works by Redon. It also names works by Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Berthe Morisot, Paul Signac, Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, and Henri Matisse. These are figures and artists identified by the Fondation for its exhibition, not a complete census of everything Fayet collected.
How does the 2026 exhibition relate to the film?
The Fondation Louis Vuitton announced Gustave Fayet: Collector – Designer, running from October 9, 2026, through March 8, 2027, at its museum in Paris. Its two sections frame Fayet first as a collector and then as an artist-designer. That structure complements the documentary’s interest in the collection while making room for Fayet’s own creative work.

In a March 1902 letter to Fayet, Gauguin wrote: “Looking through your collection, I see that I am in the company of masters, and that makes me happy, but also rather shy. […] So, after all, there are people who know how to appreciate painting.” The Fondation Louis Vuitton reproduces the passage as evidence of how Gauguin viewed Fayet’s collection.

Fayet’s own design outlook is captured in a sentence attributed to his 1924 text “Causerie sur les tapis”: “No more geometric lines, no more symmetry, no more repetitive floral arrangements […] but imagination. We can never have enough imagination in our work.” It reflects a maker interested in breaking from rigid patterns, not only a collector preserving other artists’ work.
