There is no established release date, director, writer, or cast for a fourth film. The ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 leaves room for characters to return, but neither its extra scenes nor recent cast comments announce a sequel.
Is Guardians of the Galaxy 4 happening?
No fourth film has been confirmed in the sources reviewed. Disney described Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as “The third and final entry in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy” in a feature published May 16, 2023. That phrasing closes the trilogy; it does not establish that Marvel will never use the characters again. Disney’s May 2023 feature

Marvel’s official page dates Vol. 3 to May 5, 2023, with James Gunn directing and Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Will Poulter, Maria Bakalova, and Chukwudi Iwuji among the cast. It provides no announcement of a fourth film. Marvel’s film page
What do the ending and extra scenes say about a sequel?
Rocket leads a new Guardians team
The first extra scene shows Rocket leading a new team that includes Groot, Kraglin, Adam Warlock, Cosmo, and Phyla. It sets up a future for those characters, but does not identify that future as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4. Rotten Tomatoes’ ending explainer, updated September 11, 2024

Peter Quill is singled out for a return
The separate final scene states, “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return.” That wording points to Peter Quill’s future, but it does not name a project or promise that he will return in a fourth team film. A character’s return and a confirmed Guardians sequel are different things.
What have James Gunn and the cast said?
James Gunn’s 2023 comment
In Disney’s May 16, 2023 feature, Gunn said: “I’m not going to be writing the characters again, at least not in the near future, so that’s a real sadness.” This describes his plans at that time; it is not a current production-status announcement about 2026.
Cast comments reported in March 2026
Coverage of Emerald City Comic-Con reported Pom Klementieff saying the series “was always imagined as a trilogy.” Sean Gunn described a possible return as conditional on assembling the right cast and finding a script the studio liked, adding that it would depend on who wrote and assembled the project. These are actor comments about a hypothetical future, not evidence of a greenlight or cast agreement. ComicBook.com’s March 10, 2026 report

The available sources establish no release date, director, writer, or cast for a fourth film. They also do not say whether any future project would follow Rocket’s new team, Peter Quill, or another group of characters.

- Release date: none established.
- Creative team: no director or writer established.
- Cast: no fourth-film cast announced.
- Story: the extra scenes leave character paths open without specifying a sequel.
Until Marvel or Disney announces a project, talk of a fourth film remains hypothetical. The clearest distinction is between an open-ended character future and a confirmed movie: Vol. 3 provides the former, but the sources reviewed do not establish the latter.
