gst-launch-1.0 can build a Windows pipeline that reads a prerecorded video, encodes it, muxes it for RTMP, and sends it to YouTube Live. But the official GStreamer command-line documentation does not establish a built-in file-loop or playlist-repeat option that guarantees an uninterrupted YouTube ingest. For a reliable repeating stream, use a playout application that handles end-of-file while keeping the output pipeline running, and test it with your installed plugins and YouTube event.
What gst-launch can—and cannot—do for this job
GStreamer pipelines can connect file reading and decoding, format conversion, encoding, muxing, and network output. The rtmpsink element sends FLV-muxed data to an RTMP server. These pieces can form the basis of a YouTube feed, but they do not by themselves make a reliable repeating-video system.
The official gst-launch-1.0 reference documents file playback but does not document a command-line loop or playlist-repeat property. When a file reaches end-of-stream (EOS), restarting the command may interrupt or reconnect the YouTube ingest. Do not assume that a one-line pipeline will loop seamlessly or preserve one continuous live session.
For a production stream, use an application or playout mechanism that handles EOS by seeking or reopening the source while leaving the output pipeline running. GStreamer recommends that applications needing to build pipelines programmatically use gst_parse_launch(). Treat uninterrupted playback as something to validate on your actual Windows installation and YouTube event, not a guaranteed outcome of a generic command.

Check the Windows installation before building a pipeline
Confirm the required elements
GStreamer elements depend on the plugins installed in your Windows distribution. The RTMP sink documentation identifies rtmpsink as part of the Bad Plug-ins collection, so its presence cannot be assumed. Use gst-inspect-1.0 to inspect the elements, properties, and plugin availability on the machine that will stream.
- Check for the file-source and decoding elements you plan to use, including
filesrcanddecodebin. - Check that your chosen video and audio encoders and format-conversion elements are installed.
- Check for
flvmuxandrtmpsinkif using the documented RTMP pipeline shape. - Verify the sink’s URL and protocol support before choosing YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint. The cited GStreamer sink reference documents RTMP behavior; it is not proof that every Windows build supports RTMPS.
Keep local preview separate from network output
A local playback sink is not part of the YouTube output branch. If autovideosink fails to display video on Windows, GStreamer’s Windows FAQ suggests trying d3dvideosink. That advice concerns local display only; it does not fix an encoder, muxer, RTMP, or RTMPS problem.
Design the pipeline in stages
Build and validate the feed as separate functional stages rather than copying an unverified command. The exact element names, properties, caps, and syntax depend on the codecs and plugins available in your installed Windows package.

- Read and decode: use a file source such as
filesrcand a decoder-selection element such asdecodebin. GStreamer’s examples show separate audio and video branches. - Convert formats: convert decoded audio and video into formats supported by the encoders you selected. Inspect the installed elements and their properties with
gst-inspect-1.0. - Encode: configure video and audio encoders to meet YouTube’s ingest guidance. For a broadly compatible starting point, H.264 video and AAC audio are reasonable choices among YouTube’s listed codecs; this is not a claim that a particular Windows pipeline has been tested.
- Mux: combine the encoded streams into FLV-compatible output. The documented
rtmpsinkacceptsvideo/x-flv, so it needs suitable muxed data. - Send: direct the network sink to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
The official sink example illustrates the shape of an RTMP output branch: ... ! flvmux ! rtmpsink location='rtmp://server/path/to/stream live=1'. It is an example for an RTMP server, not a ready-made YouTube command. It does not establish the correct URL syntax or RTMPS support for your installed Windows build. Confirm element availability, negotiated caps, and the actual endpoint before using a pipeline.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow to repeat a video without assuming gst-launch can loop it
A file ending is an EOS event. If the whole command-line process exits at EOS, starting it again is a process restart—not proof that YouTube will treat the output as one uninterrupted stream. A continuous loop needs playback control that can seek or reopen the media and resume feeding the existing output pipeline.
For a single recording
Use a playout application or application-level GStreamer logic that detects EOS and seeks to the beginning or reopens the file while preserving the output pipeline. Then test the full cycle: initial playback, end-of-file handling, restart of the media, and continued YouTube ingest. The cited official command-line reference does not provide a gst-launch-only loop recipe that guarantees this behavior.

For a playlist
Playlist transitions add another requirement: the next file must be opened and decoded in a way compatible with the continuing output. The official references cited here do not establish a supported gst-launch-only playlist method. Concatenating arbitrary MP4 files as bytes is not a sound substitute; container files are not simply interchangeable chunks of a continuous encoded stream.
Match YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, checked in 2026, lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. For its recommended advanced audio settings, YouTube specifies stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Settings can change, so check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before an event.

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Match the encoder configuration to the selected frame rate and resolution, and test before the live event. A nominal bitrate target is not a guarantee of stable delivery if the available upload capacity fluctuates.
Get the YouTube stream URL and key, then go live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live event you intend to use.
- Retrieve the stream URL and stream key provided for that event. YouTube describes the key as the information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it.
- Configure your GStreamer output for the endpoint and key, using a protocol and URL format supported by both the YouTube ingest option and your installed sink.
- Start the pipeline or playout application, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- Select Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready and you are ready to publish.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, public logs, or shared command history. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings before relying on that event again. YouTube’s stream setup guidance describes the operator workflow.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
gst-inspect-1.0 cannot find an element |
The relevant plugin is not installed or is not available in this GStreamer build. | Inspect the Windows installation and add or select a distribution containing the required element; verify the exact plugin and properties before rebuilding the pipeline. |
| Video plays locally but YouTube receives no feed | The network branch, muxing, endpoint, or key may be wrong; local playback does not validate the output path. | Check that encoded streams reach flvmux, the sink receives FLV-compatible data, and the URL and key match the Live Control Room event. |
| RTMPS connection fails | The selected sink or Windows plugin build may not support the chosen RTMPS endpoint or URL form. | Verify protocol support for the installed sink and the endpoint. The cited rtmpsink reference documents RTMP behavior, not universal RTMPS compatibility. |
| The stream stops when the file ends | The pipeline has reached EOS and has no playback-control logic to repeat or advance media. | Use an application or playout mechanism that handles EOS while retaining the output pipeline; test the transition on the actual setup. |
| The preview appears, but the stream looks unstable | The output settings may exceed dependable upload capacity, or bitrate and keyframe settings may not match YouTube guidance. | Choose a sustainable resolution and bitrate, use CBR, target a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and test ahead of the event. |
| Video appears but audio is missing or rejected | The audio branch may be absent, incompatible, or not muxed with the video. | Check the decoded audio branch, encoder availability, and muxed output. YouTube lists AAC or MP3; its recommended advanced settings specify stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. |
