To stream successive Hindi devotional video files on YouTube Live with GStreamer, use an application to manage the playlist and a separate GStreamer pipeline to encode and send the audio/video. GStreamer’s playbin3 can play media and signal when a file is nearly finished, but it does not by itself create a complete, tested YouTube playlist broadcaster. You must verify that your installed output sink supports YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection, then test the full setup before going public.
Before you build the stream
Check that YouTube Live is enabled
YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and enable live streaming before scheduling a broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guide.
Prepare the videos and rights
Make sure you have the right to stream each recording, including its soundtrack. Devotional subject matter does not make a recording copyright-free: a bhajan, kirtan, Gurbani recording, or other video may contain protected performances, arrangements, or audio. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. If a rights holder licensed the material, ask whether the channel must also be added to that owner’s Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. Get the encoder details
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a shared repository, or expose it in logs. YouTube says the watch page is created when the encoder starts sending content.

Build the playlist and output as two separate parts
1. Use application logic to advance through files
playbin3 is a high-level GStreamer playback element that can open a URI and automatically select decoders for supported media. For local files, supply absolute file URIs. To move from one item to the next, connect application code to playbin3’s documented about-to-finish signal and set the next URI there. Your application must determine the playlist order and handle the end of the queue, transitions, playback errors, and restart behavior; playbin3 is not itself a multi-file broadcast scheduler.
Monitor the GStreamer bus for end-of-stream and error messages. Playback and state changes can be asynchronous, so an unattended setup needs logging and explicit recovery behavior rather than assuming every file will play successfully. Consult the GStreamer playbin3 documentation for the element’s signals and behavior.

2. Encode and send the stream
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. The GStreamer rtmp2sink documentation shows a generic RTMP output example using x264enc, flvmux, and rtmp2sink. That example does not establish that your installed sink supports RTMPS or demonstrate a complete file-playlist-to-YouTube pipeline. Check the installed GStreamer version, plugin build, TLS support, and exact ingest URL before relying on it. Do not treat a generic RTMP example as proof that a secure YouTube connection will work. The documented example is a starting point for understanding an output path, not a turnkey command for your files, codecs, stream key, or RTMPS endpoint. Confirm that the selected decoder, encoder, audio path, muxer, and sink negotiate compatible formats in your actual installation. Keep credentials out of shell history and diagnostic output where possible.

Choose settings YouTube can accept and your connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The right resolution and bitrate depend on the material and the upload connection; do not choose a high bitrate merely because the source file has one. Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the current recommendations.
- Bitrate: Choose a constant bitrate that the connection can sustain continuously, including during busier network periods.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where possible, and keep it at or below four seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: Select a combination supported by the encoder and ingest settings, up to YouTube’s stated limit of 60 fps.
- Upload capacity: YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Account for both primary and backup streams if you configure one, and follow its streaming tips.
Test before broadcasting to viewers
- Start with an unlisted or private test. Use representative videos, including the most demanding motion and audio in the playlist.
- Check the local pipeline. Confirm that each file advances as intended, that audio and video remain synchronized, and that the application logs bus errors and recovers in the way you expect.
- Verify the connection and preview. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the broadcast public.
- Check the audience view. Confirm playback from the watch page and channel page on relevant devices.
- Monitor the broadcast and archive. Watch stream health and verify that any local recording or archive is intact. YouTube’s encoder guide says completed streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that statement covers longer broadcasts.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not accept the stream key or show an incoming signal: Check that the key and stream URL belong to the intended Live Control Room stream, that the channel is eligible for live streaming, and that the encoder is actually sending data.
- The sink rejects the RTMPS address or cannot connect: Verify RTMPS support in the installed sink and its TLS-enabled build. The generic
rtmp2sinkexample alone does not confirm secure-ingest compatibility. - The stream starts but video or audio is missing: Inspect the GStreamer bus and verify that the selected decoder, encoded streams, and muxer negotiate formats compatible with the output path.
- The playlist stops after one file: Ensure the application handles
about-to-finishand assigns the next URI. Also check that the next file’s URI is valid and that the application handles errors rather than silently exiting. - The stream buffers or loses health: Reduce the bitrate or resolution, check sustained upload capacity, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Recheck the network if the connection varies over time.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast: Review Live Control Room alerts and rights status. A Content ID match can affect a live stream even when you believe the recording is licensed; ask the rights holder about allowlisting the channel.
