What are the new interns’ characters like?
Simone Griffith: a personal connection to Grey Sloan
Alexis Floyd plays Simone as funny, whip-smart and high-achieving. Although she grew up in Seattle, her painful history with Grey Sloan makes joining the hospital complicated: she did not want to work there.
Benson “Blue” Kwan: talent and competition
Harry Shum Jr.’s Benson “Blue” Kwan is sharp-witted, impatient and naturally gifted. A family crisis interrupted his plans, and he arrives determined to prove himself. Shum explained that the nickname came from Blue winning blue ribbons as a child: “He’s used to winning blue ribbons as a kid, so they gave him that nickname.” (ABC Audio)

Why does Grey Sloan have a new intern class?
At the end of Season 18, Grey Sloan’s residency program had been shut down. Six months later, it is reinstated, and the hospital recruits the new residents as its attending surgeons work to rebuild the program. The Season 19 premiere puts the interns on their first shift amid injuries from a tornado. (ABC News’ Season 19 preview)

Chandra Wilson, who plays Miranda Bailey, put it this way: “The journey of the intern doesn’t change, right? It’s the same.” Caterina Scorsone described the newcomers as “this other beautiful intern class.” (ABC7)
