Fox News announced on April 4, 2024, that Greg Gutfeld had signed a new multi-year contract extension. He would continue hosting Gutfeld!, co-hosting The Five, and periodically hosting and producing FOX Nation programming. Fox cited strong Q1 2024 ratings, but did not disclose the deal’s duration, salary, expiration date, or other financial terms.
Fox News announced on April 4, 2024, that Greg Gutfeld had signed a new multi-year contract extension. The agreement kept him in his two principal on-air roles: host of the late-night-style program Gutfeld! and co-host of The Five. Fox also said Gutfeld would host and produce programming for FOX Nation from time to time.
The announcement did not disclose the contract’s precise length, expiration date, salary, or other financial terms. The defensible description is therefore “multi-year contract extension,” not a deal of a specified number of years or a publicly known dollar value.
Why Fox News renewed Greg Gutfeld
Fox presented the extension as a response to Gutfeld’s audience performance. During the first quarter of 2024, Fox said Gutfeld! averaged approximately 2.2 million viewers and 304,000 adults ages 25–54. The network said the program led the late-night programs cited in its announcement and was the highest-rated cable-news program among adults 25–54 during that quarter.

Gutfeld’s other major platform was even larger by total audience. Fox said The Five averaged 3.038 million viewers in Q1 2024 and had ranked as the top program across cable television for ten consecutive quarters.
Those figures explain why the agreement was more than a conventional renewal for one television show. Gutfeld occupied two valuable programming positions at Fox: a satirical, late-night-style program built around his personal voice and a high-rated political panel show with a broader daytime audience. Fox’s ratings and role descriptions support the conclusion that the network was retaining a personality who contributed across multiple formats—not simply renewing a single host for a single time slot.
What “topping cable news ratings” means in this case
The headline phrase can be misleading without a definition of the measure. Fox’s April 2024 announcement referred to different forms of leadership:
- The Five: Fox said it was the top cable program by total viewers during the cited Q1 2024 period.
- Gutfeld!: Fox said it led the late-night programs cited in the release by total viewers.
- Adults 25–54: Fox said Gutfeld! was the highest-rated cable-news program in that demographic during Q1 2024.
These are not interchangeable claims. Saying that Gutfeld personally “topped all cable news” would overstate the evidence. The more precise account is that The Five led the cited cable-program rankings, while Gutfeld! led its late-night comparison and performed especially strongly among adults 25–54.
Gutfeld’s continuing role at Fox
Gutfeld joined Fox News in 2007, according to the network’s contract announcement. He became one of the original co-hosts of The Five when the program launched in 2011.
Rank #2
Before Gutfeld!, he hosted Red Eye and The Greg Gutfeld Show. His current arrangement consolidated those strands of his career: political commentary and panel discussion on The Five, combined with monologue-driven comedy and satire on Gutfeld!. The agreement also left room for occasional FOX Nation projects, although Fox did not announce a specific list of future programs or a separate set of financial terms for that work.
Gutfeld’s ratings after the 2024 extension
Fox’s later ratings announcements indicated that Gutfeld remained an important part of the network’s programming strategy after the contract extension. The figures below come from Fox releases citing Nielsen data. They should be understood as network-reported ratings rather than independently audited figures in this article.
2025: A record year for Gutfeld!
Fox reported that Gutfeld! had its highest-rated year in program history in 2025. The program averaged 3.1 million total viewers and 358,000 adults ages 25–54. Fox said it finished as the most-watched program in late-night television, ahead of the broadcast and cable programs included in that report.

That result matters because it suggests the renewal was not based only on the Q1 2024 numbers available when Fox announced the deal. According to the network’s subsequent report, the show’s audience grew to a new program high during the following year.
Q1 2026: Strong results for both programs
In its Q1 2026 ratings report, Fox said The Five averaged approximately 4 million viewers and 354,000 adults ages 25–54. The network said that extended the show’s run as cable news’s most-watched program to 18 consecutive quarters.
Rank #3
Fox also reported that Gutfeld! averaged 3 million viewers during the quarter and continued to outperform the broadcast late-night programs listed in the release. The results reinforced Gutfeld’s unusual position at Fox: he was attached to both a dominant cable-news panel show and a late-night program competing beyond the cable-news category.
July 2026: Monthly ratings snapshot
The latest specific monthly data located for this report came from Fox’s July 2026 ratings release. Fox said Gutfeld! averaged 2.633 million viewers and 249,000 adults ages 25–54 that month.
In the release’s ranking of the top five cable-news programs, Gutfeld! placed third, behind The Five and Jesse Watters Primetime. It nevertheless remained ahead of the late-night programs compared in the release: Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and Comics Unleashed.
July’s monthly figure should not be treated as a replacement for the annual or quarterly results. Ratings fluctuate by month, scheduling, news events, vacations, and the comparison period. It is best used as a later snapshot showing that Gutfeld! remained a significant audience draw, while recognizing that the show was not ranked first among every category or measure in that release.
What the contract terms do—and do not—tell us
Fox disclosed that the agreement was multi-year, but did not publish:
- the number of years covered;
- the contract’s expiration date;
- Gutfeld’s salary or total compensation;
- bonuses, incentives, or other financial provisions; or
- the precise number and format of his future FOX Nation projects.
Those details should not be inferred from the ratings. High viewership can explain why a network values a host, but it does not establish what that host is paid or how long a particular agreement lasts.

Fox’s April 4, 2024 renewal reflected Greg Gutfeld’s value across two successful programs. At the time of the announcement, The Five was leading cable programming by total audience in Fox’s cited Q1 rankings, while Gutfeld! was leading its late-night comparisons and performing strongly among adults 25–54. Later Fox reports described a record 2025 for Gutfeld! and continued major audiences for both programs in 2026.
The central fact remains narrower than some headlines suggest: Gutfeld signed a multi-year extension, but Fox did not reveal its duration or financial terms. “Topping cable news ratings” also depends on whether the reference is to The Five’s total-viewer leadership, Gutfeld!’s late-night ranking, or its performance in the 25–54 demographic.
