The film follows a Wisconsin dairy farmer fighting to keep his family’s land, while his granddaughter weighs her own musical ambitions. Guthrie praises its natural-light visuals and heartfelt performances, while acknowledging a familiar, sentimental style that will not suit every viewer.
What is Green and Gold about?
Directed by Anders Lindwall, the 2025 American drama stars Craig T. Nelson as Buck, a Wisconsin dairy farmer facing foreclosure, and Madison Lawlor as Jenny, his granddaughter. Jenny works on the farm but hopes to pursue a music career. As the family confronts the possible loss of land held for generations, a wager connected to the Green Bay Packers gives Buck another chance to save it.
In Guthrie’s account, the Packers’ playoff progress provides suspense and a shared focus for the surrounding community. The sports element supports the family story rather than turning the film into a conventional sports drama. At the same time, Jenny’s ambitions and Buck’s resistance to changing how the farm is run create a generational tension: what should be preserved, and what must change for the family to move forward?
What does the review praise?
Nature as part of the film’s visual language
Guthrie sees the landscape as central to the film’s identity. She describes sweeping farmland and natural light, with greens and golden illumination echoing the title. Crediting director Anders Lindwall and cinematographer Russ Fraser, she says the images create a calm, beautiful atmosphere alongside the story’s grief, financial strain and heartache. In her reading, the film conveys its relationship with nature more through images than through speeches.

Community and performances
The review also highlights the film’s portraits of connection: farmers helping one another, Packers fans sharing hope, and family members trying to support each other through change. Guthrie praises Craig T. Nelson and Madison Lawlor, especially Lawlor’s portrayal of Jenny, describing their performances as authentic. That is her critical assessment, not a consensus claim.
Is Green and Gold worth watching?
Guthrie’s verdict is that the film’s sincerity makes its emotional uplift work. She says she is wary of manipulative sappiness but responds to the movie’s generosity and warmth. Viewers who enjoy old-fashioned family storytelling, rural settings and a gentle sports thread may find that approach appealing.

The trade-off is familiarity. The film’s earnest tone and emotional turns may feel predictable to viewers looking for a more surprising or cynical drama. Guthrie finds its ending earned; viewers less receptive to sentimentality may not share that response. The review is one critic’s opinion, rather than evidence of a broader critical consensus.
