Inkawu idliw’ilila is a Grade 12 IsiXhosa Home Language novel, and the Department of Basic Education’s free 2020 Mind the Gap guide is the clearest official study companion. It identifies uncompensated crime as the central theme, outlines the novel’s major events, and models the evidence-based character, theme and extract analysis learners need for literature questions.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) publishes IsiXhosa Mind the Gap Literature Study Guide: Inkawu idliw’ilila as part of its CAPS-aligned Grade 12 study-guide collection. The 123-page guide carries ISBN 978-1-4315-3378-7 and copyright 2020. The DBE catalogue lists the guide among its IsiXhosa Home Language resources: Mind the Gap Study Guides Grade 12 CAPS Aligned. The guide itself is available as a PDF from the Department: IsiXhosa Mind the Gap Literature Study Guide: Inkawu idliw’ilila.
The guide names S. Kula and F. Sotashe on its cover and in its acknowledgements; its introduction identifies Siphatheleni Kula as the novel’s author. It is a study resource for the novel, not a replacement for reading the prescribed text. The Western Cape Education Department also lists Inkawu Idliw’ilila as a Grade 12 IsiXhosa resource, with a revision date of 4 June 2026. That listing confirms its use in that provincial resource collection, not a uniform prescribed-text list across every province: Western Cape Education Department: Inkawu Idliw’ilila Grd.12.
Guide reuse terms
The DBE guide states that it is shared under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license. Reusers must acknowledge the Department, authors and contributors; the guide says it may not be sold. The Western Cape listing names an Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives license for its resource, so check the license attached to that specific file before adapting or redistributing it.

What the novel is about
Oxford University Press Southern Africa’s publisher synopsis centers on Thantaswa Ntlontlo, wife of businessman Msindisi Yangaphi, whose death occurs under mysterious circumstances. It frames the story around Thantaswa’s journey after his death. The publisher lists the novel as Inkawu idliw ilila IBanga 12 (novel with study notes), an IsiXhosa paperback by S. Kula, ISBN 9780190411145, published on 24 April 2015: Oxford University Press Southern Africa: Inkawu idliw ilila IBanga 12.
The DBE guide’s event sequence gives learners a structured way to recall the plot: Thantaswa and Msindisi’s relationship and marriage; a medical report that she will not have children; Msindisi considering polygamy; his murder; Mfezeko’s investigation; deception and poisoning of investigators; an attempted killing and further investigation; arrests and inheritance developments; and a final confrontation involving Thantaswa and Mfuneko. Use the novel itself to verify scene details and support interpretations rather than treating a plot outline as sufficient evidence.

Themes named in the guide
The guide identifies ulwaphulo mthetho olungenambuyekezo as the central theme. Its listed subthemes are uthando olunganyanisekanga (unfaithful love), ubugwinta (murder), ukunyoluka (greed), ukukrexeza (adultery) and inzondo (hatred). Keep the original IsiXhosa wording in mind where nuance matters: these are the guide’s classifications, while an essay still needs to demonstrate how particular events and character choices develop them.
For each theme, build an argument from the novel rather than merely repeating its label. Identify a relevant event or relationship, explain what it reveals, and connect that evidence to the question’s wording. The same discipline applies to character analysis: describe what a character does or says in a relevant episode, then explain how that detail supports your point.

How to prepare for literature questions
The 2020 Mind the Gap guide’s Paper 2 overview presents Inkawu idliw’ilila as a novel/indigenous literature option. In that guide’s exam layout, the section offers a long or short question worth 25 marks, and learners answer one question. The guide describes short questions as testing understanding of both an extract and the novel, including themes, characters, symbols and inference. It describes the long literature response as an essay, with a target of 340–390 words. These are the format and word guidance printed in the 2020 guide; they should not be treated as independently verified requirements for a later examination year.
For a short question
- Read the extract closely and identify who is speaking, what is happening and how the passage relates to events elsewhere in the novel.
- Answer the question asked: it may require explanation, inference, or analysis of a character, theme or symbol.
- Use precise details from the extract and, where the question calls for it, relevant knowledge of the full novel.
For a long essay
- Unpack the prompt. Mark the character, theme or issue it asks about and the task verb, such as discuss or explain.
- Choose relevant evidence. Select several accurately recalled events that directly support your answer; avoid retelling the whole plot.
- Plan a clear argument. The guide recommends a coherent introduction, body and conclusion. Let each body paragraph develop one point, supported by a relevant event and explanation.
- Explain the connection. State not only what happened but what the event shows about the question’s focus.
- Check the response. Confirm that each paragraph answers the prompt, the argument is understandable, and the essay is within the guide’s stated 340–390-word target when practising that format.
Study the novel and guide together
Use the official guide to organize revision, clarify its named themes and practise the question types it describes. Use the primary novel to confirm sequence, wording and detail, and to gather evidence for your own interpretation. The publisher’s paperback listing identifies a version with study notes, but the listing alone does not establish current stock or price.

In her foreword to the 2020 guide, Minister of Basic Education Matsie Angelina Motshekga wrote: “The Mind the Gap Literature Self Study Guide is responding to the broader sectoral reading challenges that the country is experiencing.”
