A 2021 report by Nieuwsblad relayed a $10 million estimate from specialist estimate websites, but described such figures as guesswork. It should not be treated as confirmed wealth.
What is Gotye’s reported net worth?
The often-repeated figure is $10 million, attributed to specialist estimate websites and reported by Nieuwsblad in 2021. The newspaper characterized those estimates as guesswork; no transparent calculation or verified financial records were cited. The figure is therefore an unverified estimate, not an established account of Gotye’s assets or net worth. Nieuwsblad’s 2021 report

Gotye is the stage name of Australian musician Wouter “Wally” De Backer. Public sources reviewed do not disclose a reliable current accounting of his assets, debts, investments, taxes, or the terms of his recording and publishing agreements.
Why the hit song’s success does not reveal his personal wealth
“Somebody That I Used To Know,” featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra, was a major commercial hit. Forbes reported Nielsen’s 2012 figures of 6.8 million US digital sales and 45 million US plays, making it the year’s top-selling digital song and top-streamed song in the United States, respectively. These are track-level measures of sales and listening—not figures for Gotye’s personal earnings. Forbes’ account of the song and its success

Revenue from a hit is not the same as money retained by an artist. The available reporting does not provide a complete breakdown of label terms, publishing income, collaborators’ shares, rights, taxes, expenses, or private investments. In 2021, Nieuwsblad also reported that 45% of proceeds went to the heirs of Luiz Bonfá, but the report does not provide a primary contract or audited royalty statement. That share is secondary reporting, not independently verified accounting. Nieuwsblad’s 2021 report
How to interpret the other money figure
A separate historical estimate is sometimes liable to confusion with net worth. In 2012, Nieuwsblad estimated that €2.5–3 million had been generated for Gotye by that point, based on the outlet’s assumptions about downloads, royalties, album sales, and live performances. This was a newspaper estimate of money generated at the time—not audited accounting, a current figure, or a net-worth calculation. Nieuwsblad’s 2012 estimate

Gotye developed “Somebody That I Used To Know” over about six months, according to Forbes, drawing initial inspiration from the introduction to “Seville,” a bossa nova recording he found in an Australian thrift shop. The song’s reach helped establish the scale of his breakthrough, but it cannot by itself show how much wealth he accumulated.
At the 2013 Grammy Awards, Gotye and Kimbra won Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the song; Gotye also won Best Alternative Music Album for Making Mirrors, according to the Recording Academy. Those awards document career recognition, not financial value. Recording Academy: “GRAMMY Hall Of Fame Inspirations: Gotye”
