3. The Roku Channel
Best for: free movies, television, live channels, and Roku Originals.
The Roku Channel is free and ad-supported, with on-demand movies and shows, live channels, and Roku-produced programming. Despite its name, you do not need a Roku device: access is also available through a web browser and supported apps.

4. Plex
Best for: combining free streaming with your own media collection.
Plex offers a free, ad-supported selection of movies, television shows, and live TV. It also has a separate personal-media-server feature, which lets you organize and stream media you have legally acquired.

In return, the service provides ad-free streaming, with a catalog that often suits viewers looking beyond mainstream blockbusters.
Monthly viewing limits and available titles are set by the participating institution. Having a library card does not automatically guarantee Kanopy access, so check your library’s website or search for it inside Kanopy before assuming you can use the service.

Borrowing limits vary. A library may cap the number of items you can check out in a month, and the catalog may differ substantially from Kanopy’s. It is therefore worth checking both platforms if your library supports them.

Best for: finding specific licensed films, official television uploads, and documentary channels.

Peacock has a no-cost, ad-supported tier containing a selection of movies and television shows. It is smaller than the paid Peacock plans, and the exact lineup can change over time.
