Google’s October 31, 2019 Halloween Doodle was a short interactive game: choose doors to meet spooky animals, then pick “trick” or “treat” to learn more. The original is preserved in Google’s Doodle archive.
How the Halloween Doodle game worked
Google described the visitors as “A bunch of cute & spooky animals” and explained: “Which animals you see depends on which doors you choose. Pick “trick” or “treat” to learn more.” In other words, the doors determined which animals appeared, and the next choice revealed an animal-related response. Google’s archived Doodle page gives this description.
Contemporary coverage by HotHardware reported that treats showed animal facts, while tricks triggered cute animations. Its report also named the six animals in the game: owl, bat, tarantula, wolf, octopus, and jaguar. Google’s archive description does not enumerate them, so that list is attributed to HotHardware’s October 31, 2019 article.
When it launched and where to find it
Google dates the Doodle to October 31, 2019. HotHardware reported at the time that it would be available in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom; that is a report of its original availability, not a guarantee of present-day access in those countries. For the original, start with the archived Google Doodle.
#1 Best Overall
- This 1 vs Many game by renowned designer Emerson Matsuuchi is the first time the original Halloween movie has been made into its own board game.
- It was the night HE came home... and one player must take on the role of Michael Myers!
- The others will control Laurie and her friends as they scramble to find weapons, the kids, and a way to escape.
- Their task will be made more difficult because Myers can only be seen when you're looking right at him!
- 2-4 Players | Ages 14+ | 60 Minutes Playing Time
Who made the Doodle
Google’s archive credits Lydia Nichols as Art Lead. Animation was by Stan Cameron, Alyssa Winans, and Lydia Nichols; UX design by Diana Tran, Stan Cameron, and Lydia Nichols; and music and sound by Silas Hite. These credits appear on Google’s 2019 Doodle page.
Animal-conservation links on Google’s page
The archived page also points readers to WWF’s United States and international sites for ways to support animals like those featured. These are conservation resources linked from the Doodle, rather than instructions required to play the game. See Google’s page for those links.
