Google’s Blob Opera characters returned in Blob Beats, a separate rhythm game announced on December 13, 2022. Instead of shaping voices by moving blobs around, players follow falling notes and press keys in time to perform classical music. The original Blob Opera remains a different, freeform music experiment.
Blob Beats is a rhythm game, not a new Blob Opera mode
Google announced Blob Beats on December 13, 2022, describing an arcade-style experience built around classical compositions and the familiar singing blobs. Notes descend toward a target; players try to hit them at the right moment, earn points and progress through difficulty levels. Google’s announcement that the blobs were “back” referred to the characters returning in a new game—not to a 2026 relaunch of the original experiment.
The format has been compared to Guitar Hero because of its falling-note timing mechanic, but Blob Beats is a small browser-based cultural experiment, not a full commercial rhythm game.

- Open the official Blob Beats experiment on Google Arts & Culture.
- Choose a composition and difficulty, if those options are available in the current version.
- Watch the notes move toward the on-screen target.
- Press the matching key as each note reaches the target. Accurate timing builds your score.
- Try again or move to a higher difficulty for a tougher timing challenge.
At launch, 9to5Google reported that the desktop controls used the S, D, F and G keys, with Easy, Medium and Hard settings. Google confirms the falling-note game and difficulty progression, but does not specify those key labels in its public description. Treat them as launch-period reporting rather than a guarantee about the current interface.

Which classical pieces are in it?
Launch coverage by 9to5Google reported five selections: Beethoven’s Für Elise, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, Vivaldi’s Spring, Mozart’s Turkish March and Offenbach’s Infernal Galop. Google described a selection of iconic classical compositions, but its announcement does not enumerate the full track list. The five titles are therefore best understood as the reported launch lineup, not a promise that the current catalog is unchanged or exhaustive.

In Blob Opera, dragging a blob up or down changes its pitch; moving it forward or back changes its vowel sound. The four parts—tenor, bass, mezzo-soprano and soprano—respond together, with the system producing harmonies in real time. It is a creative sandbox, not a rhythm test.

Where machine learning fits
Machine learning is central to Blob Opera. Google says its model was trained on 16 hours of singing from four opera singers, and uses that learning to generate the blobs’ vocal behavior. The idea is to let people explore operatic-sounding voices without needing singing experience or formal music training.

It does not say the game dynamically generates its notes or compositions with AI. A separate companion experiment, Beethoven Beats, asks players to tap a rhythm and uses machine learning to match it to a section of Beethoven’s piano music. That is not the same game as Blob Beats.

Where to play and what to expect
Google’s Arts & Culture site lists separate pages for Blob Beats and Blob Opera; both also appear in the Play directory. Google’s 2022 announcement also pointed users to the Arts & Culture app for Android and iOS. These experiments are listed by Google, but web experiences can change or behave differently across devices.
A desktop or laptop is the safer place to try Blob Beats because launch coverage described keyboard controls. Do not assume a phone or tablet will offer the same inputs unless the game itself displays touch controls. Blob Opera’s official page warns that it uses web-audio technology and may not perform optimally on older devices. In either experiment, browser audio settings, device performance and input focus can affect the experience.

If the game will not play
These are practical checks, not a guaranteed fix: make sure the tab and device are not muted; check that audio is routed to the intended output; click or tap inside the game before entering keyboard inputs; and try a current desktop browser if you are on an older device. If the page hangs, reload it after allowing any audio prompt, or temporarily disable a content blocker to see whether it is interfering. Opening Blob Opera separately can help distinguish a problem with one experiment from a broader browser or Arts & Culture issue. Use Google’s official pages rather than unofficial mirror sites, which may have different controls, ads or branding.
Which one should you try?
Pick Blob Beats if you want a short, structured challenge: watch the notes, keep time and chase a better score. Pick Blob Opera if you would rather experiment with melody, vowel sounds and harmony without a pass-or-fail rhythm mechanic. The two experiences share characters, but offer different ways into music.
