Google’s “Pangolin Love” was a playable Valentine’s Day Doodle released on February 13, 2017. Its four mini-games followed two pangolins through a romantic quest—and used that playful premise to bring attention to the illegal trade threatening pangolins.
What was “Pangolin Love”?
Google released the Doodle on February 13, 2017, the day before Valentine’s Day. Contemporary coverage described two pangolins on a journey to prepare a gift for one another, with four mini-games set in Ghana, India, China and the Philippines. Tech Times’ report from launch day is the source for those game details.
The design connected courtship and gift-giving with a conservation subject many players might not have known much about. The romantic story made the animal central to the experience rather than just a decorative Valentine’s Day image.

How did the game work?
The mini-games changed the activity as the pangolin moved through its journey. The launch-day report described these tasks:

- Follow a rhythm-based dancing segment, then complete the quest to prepare a gift for the pangolin’s mate.
The same report said the Doodle was available through Google’s homepage on desktop, Android and iOS at launch. That is a historical availability note, not a guarantee that the game still works on those platforms.
Why did the Doodle feature pangolins?
Pangolins are mammals, not reptiles. Their scales and ability to curl into a defensive ball give them a distinctive appearance, but they are also targeted by illegal wildlife trade. WWF calls the pangolin the world’s most trafficked mammal, citing demand for its meat and scales as well as pangolin leather in the Americas. WWF’s pangolin overview describes the animals and the pressures they face.

There are eight recognized pangolin species—four in Africa and four in Asia—and their conservation classifications vary. WWF describes their status as ranging from vulnerable to critically endangered; it would be inaccurate to imply that every species shares the same formal category. WWF also reports that more than one million pangolins were trafficked over a 10-year period and cites a 2019 estimate of one pangolin poached every three minutes. Those are historical estimates, not current annual counts.
The contrast between a lighthearted game and a serious trafficking crisis gave the Doodle its point: an unfamiliar animal could become memorable through play, while the game directed attention toward the threats it faces. No campaign figures establishing donations, adoptions or conservation outcomes are provided in the cited coverage, so the Doodle’s measurable impact should not be assumed.

Can you still play it?
“Pangolin Love” is a historical Doodle, not a Valentine’s Day feature currently running on Google’s homepage. Google maintains an official Doodle archive, but the available information does not confirm a dedicated, playable archive page for this particular game. Archived interactive content can also depend on scripts, assets and browser behavior that may have changed. Treat any surviving version as uncertain rather than expecting it to work on every modern browser or phone.
