The “Google TV preps free live TV” story dates to an August 5, 2022 APK teardown. The feature later launched as Google TV Freeplay. In the United States, built-in Freeplay channels are available without a subscription, signup or separate app, but they are ad-supported, internet-based and subject to change.
This guide separates that historical leak from the current service, shows the channel names Google currently lists, and explains how Freeplay differs from paid and third-party services in the Live guide.
What the 2022 “preps” story actually reported
The original August 5, 2022 9to5Google report was an APK Insight, not a launch announcement. Text in the software described “50 channels of live TV,” with no subscription, signup or download requirement. It also showed a preliminary list of more than 30 names.

Some names or brands still appear in related feeds, but overlap does not make that 2022 list current.
What Google TV Freeplay is today
Google now calls the built-in service Freeplay. Google’s U.S. support page says Freeplay channels are available at no charge and do not require a subscription, account signup or app installation for the built-in experience.
- Availability: Google documents Freeplay as a U.S. feature.
- Cost: No monthly fee or cable account for the built-in channels.
- Advertising: Programming is funded by ads. Google says ad personalization can use information such as a device advertising ID or Google Account data, subject to its controls.
- Connection: Playback requires an internet-connected, up-to-date Google TV device.
- Format: These are scheduled, linear streams. “Live” does not mean every program is a live event; many channels show reruns, loops or curated schedules.
Google has used different counts for different scopes. A 2023 announcement described more than 800 free channels in the broader Live guide, including partner services. A 2024 update described 150 built-in Freeplay channels at that time. The 800-plus figure is not a claim that Google itself supplies 800-plus built-in channels, and the 150 figure should not be treated as a current count unless Google states it again.

Current U.S. Freeplay channels listed by Google
The maintained reference is Google’s current live-TV support page. The names below are organized for scanning, but Google can add, remove, rename or region-limit feeds without publishing a dated changelog. The list is for U.S. Google TV users and may not appear identically on every device.

City-branded feeds such as Boston 25, WFTV Orlando, WHIO Dayton, WSB Atlanta, WSOC Charlotte and Action News Jax are local-news streams, not proof that Google TV supplies every local broadcast affiliate or every network program in those markets.
How to watch Freeplay
- Turn on a Google TV television, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer or other supported Google TV device.
- From the home screen, open the Live tab.
- Browse the guide and select a Freeplay channel.
- Press the select or channel button to start playback.
- Use Favorites and Recents where those controls are available on your device.
Freeplay channels can also surface in recommendations or through the Google TV Freeplay app. Menu labels vary by manufacturer, so the on-device Live guide is more reliable than a universal button sequence.

Freeplay versus other channels in the Live guide
A channel shown in Live is not automatically a built-in Freeplay channel. Google’s guide can combine Freeplay with channels supplied by other apps, paid services or an antenna.

Google says Haystack News, Plex, Pluto TV, Tubi, YouTube TV, Sling TV and Philo may appear in the broader Live experience. Their presence does not make them part of free built-in Freeplay, and paid services still require their own subscriptions.

- Confirm that the device is being used in the United States.
- Install pending Google TV system updates.
- Update the Google TV Home app from the device’s app store.
- Restart the television or streaming device.
- Check whether Apps-only mode or Basic Mode is enabled. Google’s Google TV and Android TV guide explains that these modes limit connected-TV features.
- Make sure you are viewing the Google TV Live tab rather than only a third-party app’s guide.
- If one channel is absent, check the current guide: that feed may have been removed, renamed or temporarily unavailable.
Basic Mode is available only on some devices, and Apps-only mode can hide parts of the normal Google TV interface. Changing language or using a VPN should not be expected to recreate the U.S. Freeplay lineup in another country.

When Freeplay is—and is not—a good fit
It makes sense when you want
- No-cost, casual live programming with a traditional channel guide.
- News, weather, reruns, movies, lifestyle shows or niche sports content.
- Fewer separate FAST apps on a device you already own.
- A service that does not require a monthly subscription.
Choose something else when you need
- Every major local network station in your area.
- A specific cable channel or premium network.
- Reliable rights to major league sports.
- DVR recording and robust pause or rewind features.
- Availability outside the United States.
- A fixed lineup that will not change.
An antenna is generally the better complement for local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC or PBS reception where signals are usable. A paid service such as YouTube TV, Sling TV or Philo is more appropriate when a required cable network, sports package or DVR matters more than avoiding a subscription.
The practical answer
Google TV did move from a 2022 “preparing” story to a real product: Freeplay. U.S. users can watch built-in, ad-supported live channels without paying or signing up, but the service is not a cable replacement and its lineup is dynamic. Treat the Live guide on your device and Google’s official support page as the operational source of truth, and distinguish Freeplay from third-party providers and paid services listed alongside it.
