The Google TV Streamer is a 4K streaming box and Google Home hub in one. It succeeds Google’s Chromecast hardware with more storage, Ethernet, a redesigned remote, and Matter and Thread support—but its $99.99 U.S. launch price makes the most sense for households already using Google services or smart-home devices. For basic streaming alone, a less expensive player may be better value.
What the Google TV Streamer is
Announced by Google on August 6, 2024, the Google TV Streamer is a set-top box that connects to a television over HDMI. Google positioned it as the successor to Chromecast hardware: the familiar Google TV experience remains, but the device is no longer a small dongle hidden behind the screen. It combines three roles: a Google TV entertainment device, a casting target for supported apps and phones, and a controller for compatible Google Home smart-home devices. The hub features are useful only to the extent that a home’s devices, accounts, and setup are compatible; this is not a universal controller for every smart-home product.
What it offers for watching TV
Google TV discovery and apps
Google TV brings recommendations and watchlists together across supported services, with household profiles and access to streaming apps. Google said at launch that the platform offered more than 700,000 movies and shows and more than 800 free live channels. These are Google’s promotional catalogue figures; availability varies by country, app, account, and date. A box does not include subscriptions to services such as Netflix, Disney+, Max, or YouTube TV.

Picture, sound, and casting
The Streamer supports 4K HDR video, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. To get those formats, the TV, any receiver or soundbar in the HDMI path, the content, and the app must support them. It can also cast from supported phones and apps. Google’s launch announcement describes these capabilities but does not establish comparative playback or speed test results.
Photos, ambient mode, and Gemini features
Ambient mode can display Google Photos, and Google announced generative-AI screensaver creation. Gemini features were described as providing summaries, reviews, and season-by-season information to help people decide what to watch. Treat those as discovery aids, not authoritative reviews or a promise of a fully autonomous assistant. Availability and behavior can depend on region, language, title, account, and software version.
How its smart-home hub works
The Streamer supports Google Home controls, Matter devices, and a built-in Thread border router. On the TV, users can access compatible camera feeds and controls for supported devices such as lights, temperature settings, and blinds. - Matter controller: Helps add and control compatible Matter devices through the supported Google Home setup.
- Thread border router: Connects compatible Thread devices with the home network.
- Google Home: Supplies the ecosystem layer for managing supported devices and controls.
Matter is not a guarantee that every device exposes all its features in every platform, and Thread devices still need compatible setup and suitable network conditions. Camera, lock, automation, and advanced functions may have their own compatibility or service requirements. If a household already has a capable smart-home controller—or does not use Google Home—the Streamer’s hub role may add little.

What the launch price includes—and what it does not

Budget for an HDMI cable if you do not already have a suitable one. Ethernet cable is optional for wired networking. Streaming subscriptions are separate, as are any TV, receiver, or soundbar upgrades needed to use 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, or Dolby Atmos. Google’s official product destination is the Google Store; current price, stock, and support status have not been verified here.

The interface is still recognizably Google TV, so this is primarily a hardware, connectivity, and smart-home upgrade rather than a wholly new viewing platform. Google described the Streamer as Chromecast’s successor; that does not mean existing Chromecast devices stop working. Google’s announcement
- Consider upgrading if you need more storage, Ethernet, the newer remote, or Google Home, Matter, and Thread features in the living room.
- Keep your Chromecast if it still streams reliably and you do not need those additions. An upgrade solely for the Google TV interface is harder to justify.
- Consider the form factor if your TV is wall-mounted without shelf space: the Streamer is a visible box, not a hidden HDMI dongle.
How it compares with other streaming devices
The best alternative depends on the services and smart-home platform a household already uses. The comparisons below are about fit, not a claim that one device is objectively best; current model prices and availability are not established here.

Who should buy it?
It makes sense for Google households
- You already use Google Home, Nest, Android, YouTube, or Google Photos.
- You want a streaming box that can also surface compatible smart-home controls and camera feeds on the TV.
- You value 32GB storage, Ethernet, or the updated remote.
- You want 4K HDR and Dolby Vision or Atmos support and have compatible equipment.
Choose a cheaper streamer if you only need video
If your main requirement is streaming and you are content with Roku, Fire TV, or another inexpensive player, the Streamer’s smart-home features may not warrant paying more. The same is true if you do not use Google services or already have both a capable streamer and smart-home hub.
Choose by household ecosystem
An Apple-focused home should weigh Apple TV 4K for AirPlay, HomeKit, and Apple services. An Alexa- and Prime-focused home may prefer Fire TV. Roku suits buyers who prioritize a simpler, platform-neutral streaming experience. Compare current prices before purchasing: the only firm price cited here is Google’s $99.99 U.S. launch MSRP from 2024.

- TV and HDMI path: Confirm the television and any receiver or soundbar support the formats you want. A suitable HDMI cable is not included according to launch coverage.
