Google Search launched a Pokémon-catching Easter egg on April 4, 2025, letting mobile users collect the original 151 Pokémon from the Kanto Pokédex. It was a small interactive feature inside Search, not Pokémon GO. Its availability in September 2026 is not confirmed, so the steps below describe how it worked and how to check whether it still appears for you.
What was Google’s Pokémon Pokédex Easter egg?
The feature added a Poké Ball control to certain mobile Google Search results. Tap it and the Pokémon associated with the search appeared in a capture animation, then joined an on-screen Pokédex. Uncaught entries appeared as silhouettes, and prompts offered clues for finding others by searching their names. Contemporary launch coverage described the feature and its mechanics in 9to5Google’s April 2025 report; Radio Times also reported on the mobile experience.
It was a Search Easter egg, not a standalone game. A community reference classifies it as an April Fools’ Day feature, but that is not the same as a current Google availability notice: Bulbapedia’s entry.

How to try it on a phone or tablet
These are the launch-era steps. Search interfaces and experiments can change, so the Poké Ball may not appear now.

- Open the Google app or visit Google Search in a mobile browser.
- Search for Pokémon, Pikachu, or the full name of another original Kanto Pokémon.
- Look for a Poké Ball button near the lower-right corner of the results page. If it appears, tap it to trigger the capture animation.
- Open the Pokédex or collection view to check caught Pokémon and remaining silhouettes.
- Follow a clue or “Search to catch” prompt, then search for the Pokémon you think it identifies.
- Sign in to a Google Account if prompted and you want your collection progress saved.
Launch coverage described the feature as mobile-focused; desktop results generally did not show the catching control. Reports included the Google app and mobile browsers, but neither platform nor device is guaranteed to work today. See PokeJungle’s contemporary instructions.
Which Pokémon could you catch?
The collection was the original 151 Pokémon in the Kanto Pokédex, from Bulbasaur through Mew. “Catch ’em all” meant completing that first-generation set—not collecting every species added to the franchise in later generations. Searching for a later-generation Pokémon could still show ordinary Search information, but it did not make that Pokémon part of this 151-entry collection.

How did clues and Master Balls work?
The Pokédex showed collected entries alongside silhouettes for Pokémon still missing. Search prompts provided clues, making the activity a name-and-discovery hunt rather than requiring users to know all 151 names before starting.
Ordinary catches used Poké Balls. Reports also described Master Balls awarded as collection progress advanced and used for especially difficult or Legendary and Mythical Pokémon. One regional account gives examples of reported milestones, but the precise schedule should not be treated as an official, universal rule: Andina’s report.

Do you need a Google Account?
Launch reporting associated signing in with saving collection progress across searches or sessions; it did not establish that an account was always necessary just to see the animation. Signed in, progress could be saved. Signed out, do not count on the collection persisting. The available reporting does not explain the Easter egg’s data practices in detail, so this distinction is about functionality, not a broader privacy guarantee.

- Use a phone or tablet rather than desktop Search.
- Try the Google app if mobile web is not showing the control, or switch to a mobile browser.
- Search a full Kanto Pokémon name such as Pikachu, then try adding Pokémon to the query.
- If Search is in another language, try an English-language interface. Regional reports suggested language and query wording could affect whether the control appeared.
- Try another browser or clear stale page data, bearing in mind that clearing data could affect unsaved progress.
Availability may have varied by country, language, browser, account, or rollout. No complete official geographic availability list or current support status is established. Some users reported collections that would not reach 151, including a Google Search Help Community post about getting stuck at 149. That report does not establish an official fix: the community thread.

Check which entry is missing, search its full species name, and try adding Pokémon to the query. If progress is tied to a signed-in account, try the same account in another mobile browser. A missing catch could reflect a feature bug, a sync problem, or changing experiment behavior rather than a mistake on your part. No guaranteed recovery method is established, and changing accounts or clearing cookies could put existing progress at risk.
Is this Pokémon GO?
No. The collection existed only in Google Search. It did not involve GPS walks, PokéStops, raids, trading, or a Pokémon GO account, and completing the Search Pokédex did not unlock Pokémon in Pokémon GO or a Nintendo game.
Is the Easter egg still available in 2026?
The confirmed point is its April 4, 2025 launch, reported at the time by 9to5Google. A current Google support page confirming that the feature remains active has not been established. Treat it as a 2025 Search feature that may still appear for some users, rather than a service guaranteed to work everywhere today. The most direct check is to try the mobile steps above; if no Poké Ball appears, that alone does not identify whether the cause is device, language, region, account, or retirement.
