Google has delivered several of the controls discussed in a September 30, 2024 report about NotebookLM’s AI-generated podcasts—but not all of them. Users can now choose formats, languages, length presets, source selection and prompt direction, and can even join an Audio Overview by voice in experimental Interactive Mode. However, Google’s current documentation does not confirm unrestricted host-persona selection, specific voice casting, exact episode durations or sentence-level editing.
The original report was a product-roadmap comment, not a new August 2026 launch announcement. The current feature is officially called Audio Overview: a source-based, podcast-like discussion rather than a complete podcast-production system.
What Google said in 2024
On September 30, 2024, VentureBeat reported comments from Raiza Martin, then a NotebookLM product leader, about the demand for more “knobs” over Audio Overviews.

The immediate examples highlighted in the report were host-persona and length controls, while the broader direction included more control over how the AI hosts present the source material. These were reported as planned or desired areas of development—not as a formal promise that every control would arrive by a particular date.

That distinction matters in 2026. The question is no longer simply whether Google planned more control. It is which controls actually exist in NotebookLM now.
What NotebookLM can control now
According to Google’s current Audio Overview documentation, NotebookLM offers substantially more customization than the original two-host experience.

The four Audio Overview formats
Deep Dive
Deep Dive is the closest match to the original NotebookLM experience: an in-depth conversation between two AI hosts. It is useful when the listener wants connections and explanation rather than a simple readout of isolated source summaries.

The Brief
The Brief is a quick overview delivered by one speaker and documented as lasting under two minutes. It is better suited to rapid orientation, a short update or deciding whether a source set deserves deeper attention.
The Critique
The Critique uses two hosts to provide constructive criticism of submitted material. This can be useful for reviewing a draft, proposal or argument, but the result remains AI-generated commentary—not a substitute for subject-matter or editorial review.
The Debate
The Debate presents multiple perspectives in a formal back-and-forth. It is potentially useful for comparing competing arguments, provided the notebook contains balanced and sufficiently complete sources.
How to customize an Audio Overview
On desktop
- Open NotebookLM and create a notebook or open an existing one.
- Add relevant sources, such as PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs or Google Slides.
- Open the notebook’s Studio panel.
- Select Audio Overview.
- Choose Deep Dive, The Brief, The Critique or The Debate.
- Select the output language.
- Choose Shorter, Default or Longer when the English length control is available.
- Enter a custom prompt to direct the emphasis or audience.
- Start generation. NotebookLM can generate the audio in the background while you continue working.
- Listen, change playback speed, share the result or download it.
Useful prompts include:
- “Explain this for a high-school student.”
- “Focus only on the methodology and limitations.”
- “Compare the two competing arguments and identify where the sources disagree.”
- “Give an introductory explanation, then define the specialist terms.”
A prompt is a steering mechanism, not a deterministic script. It can influence the emphasis and level of explanation, but it does not guarantee exact wording, a fixed outline or a particular number of minutes.

On mobile
Google’s mobile documentation says users can open Audio Overviews from the Studio panel, tap the customization control, choose a language, adjust length, select or deselect sources and add prompts. The mobile app also supports playback controls, background listening and downloading, although the exact experience can differ from the browser version.
Interactive Mode changes the relationship with the audio
The most significant change is not simply another format. It is Interactive Mode, which lets a listener join the AI hosts’ discussion and ask a question by voice.
- Create a new Audio Overview.
- Select Interactive Mode.
- While listening, select Join.
- Wait for the hosts to invite you to speak.
- Ask a question by voice.
- The hosts respond using the notebook’s sources and then resume the original discussion.
Google currently documents Interactive Mode as English-only and experimental. It warns that users may encounter delays, speaker switching, an extra voice or other audio problems. Shared or downloaded Audio Overviews cannot be interactively controlled by other listeners. Google’s help page also says that the user’s voice and transcribed interactions are not stored or shared; that statement should not be generalized to all notebook content or every account type.
Which original promises have arrived?
Clearly delivered or substantially delivered
- Length: English users can choose Shorter, Default or Longer.
- Format: Users have several modes beyond the original Deep Dive.
- Language: Users can select an output language, with the Google Account language used by default in applicable cases.
- Prompt-based direction: Users can request a particular focus or expertise level.
- Participation: English users can join an overview and ask questions in Interactive Mode.
Still unconfirmed as full controls
The available official documentation does not establish that users can freely choose named host personalities, specific voices, individual host genders or vocal characteristics. It also does not document precise duration controls, manually placed segments, exact scripts or reliable editing of individual sentences and host responses.

In other words, Google followed through on the broad direction of the 2024 comments, especially around steerability and interaction. That is different from delivering a fully configurable cast and production timeline.
Audio Overview is not a conventional podcast studio
Calling Audio Overview an “AI podcast” is understandable because the output often sounds like a conversational podcast. But the more precise term is Google’s own: Audio Overview.
NotebookLM is designed to turn a notebook’s sources into a listening experience. The cited Google documentation does not establish a conventional multitrack editing workflow, human host-recording workflow, built-in RSS publishing system, music or ad-insertion system, or broadcast-ready accuracy guarantee.

That makes NotebookLM a strong fit for private study, research digestion and internal briefings. It is a weaker fit for a publisher that needs an approved script, voice direction, sound design, detailed edits, distribution analytics and a repeatable production pipeline.
Why the controls matter
The feature progression suggests three broad stages:
- Novelty: Turn documents into a convincing two-host discussion.
- Steerability: Add formats, length presets, language selection and prompts.
- Participation: Let the listener enter the conversation.
This is an interpretation of the documented feature progression, not a stated Google product strategy. Nevertheless, the distinction is useful because the controls serve different jobs:
- Students can request an introductory explanation or a longer discussion of difficult concepts.
- Researchers can focus the conversation on methodology, limitations or disagreements among sources.
- Executives can use The Brief for a rapid orientation.
- Educators can create different listening modes for review or discussion.
- Content teams can use Critique or Debate to pressure-test material before human editing.
- Accessibility-focused listeners can consume source material through audio rather than reading every document on screen.
What the new controls do not solve
Accuracy
Google warns that Audio Overviews may contain inaccuracies and audio glitches. Source grounding does not mean every spoken statement is correct. The hosts may misunderstand a source, connect ideas too aggressively or present a weak inference with confidence.
For important claims, check the original sources and ask NotebookLM to identify supporting citations before relying on the audio. Medical, legal, financial, political and reputationally sensitive material deserves human review before publication or decision-making.

NotebookLM can only work with the material supplied or selected. A source set should be relevant, complete, current, legally usable and correctly interpreted. A polished conversation can make incomplete or misleading material sound authoritative.
Editorial control
The prompt can ask for a formal, concise, skeptical, introductory or technical treatment. It is not equivalent to a locked script. Users should expect probabilistic output rather than exact execution of every instruction.

Language and availability
Length controls are documented as English-only, and Interactive Mode is also English-only. Feature availability may vary by country, age, account type, subscription or Workspace edition. NotebookLM supports many languages, but that does not mean every control works in every language.
Sharing
Only notebook owners and editors can make generated audio publicly available or manage access. Google’s documentation says public notebook sharing is available for consumer accounts but is currently disabled for Workspace Enterprise and Education accounts. Deleting the audio invalidates previously generated sharing links. Check permissions before promising that a listener will be able to open a shared result.
Usage limits
Google’s documented Audio Overview limits vary by account and subscription and may change. The current help page lists examples including:
- Standard access: 3 Audio Overviews per day
- More Access: 6 per day
- Higher Level Access: 20 per day
- Expanded Level Access: 40 per day for some Workspace configurations
- Highest Level Access: 200 per day in some configurations
These figures are tier-dependent and should not be treated as permanent. Consult Google’s current limits page for the account being evaluated.

The hosts misstate a source
Review the original document, ask for citations for important claims and have a human verify the audio before distributing it.
The overview focuses on the wrong material
Deselect irrelevant sources and use a narrow prompt that identifies the intended topic, audience and depth.
The result is too long or too shallow
Use the length preset and specify the desired level of explanation. The available settings are presets, not an exact minute-by-minute control.

The tone is unsuitable
Ask for a formal, concise, skeptical, beginner-friendly or technical treatment. Do not assume that this creates a permanent host persona.
Interactive Mode behaves unpredictably
Treat it as experimental and expect delays or voice glitches. Use a standard generated overview when consistency matters.
Sharing fails
Check notebook permissions, the recipient’s account and the Workspace edition. Enterprise and Education restrictions may apply.

Check the account’s current plan and quota. Google’s limits vary substantially by tier and may change.
Free and paid access
NotebookLM has standard access through a Google account, while additional access is available through Google AI plans, Google Cloud and qualifying Workspace plans. Google’s commercial model is primarily about higher limits and expanded access rather than turning NotebookLM into a separate podcast-production subscription.
Google’s official access information lists different access levels, but prices and availability can vary by geography and account type. Do not assume that paying for a higher NotebookLM tier buys multitrack editing, fixed scripts, voice casting or RSS publishing.
Readers who need those capabilities may need a separate production tool. Descript is more appropriate for transcript-based editing and production assets. ElevenLabs is more voice-centric for synthetic narration and multilingual audio, subject to the relevant voice rights and commercial-use terms. Wondercraft is more directly aimed at AI-audio and podcast-style production workflows. Current plans, export rules and commercial terms should be checked before purchase.
So, did Google deliver on the promise?
Partly—and in the broad direction, substantially. The September 2024 report described a future in which users would have more control over Audio Overviews. By August 16, 2026, NotebookLM offers format choices, length presets, language selection, prompt steering and experimental voice participation.
But the product has not become a fully controllable podcast-production suite. The current documentation does not confirm arbitrary host personas, individual voice selection, exact durations, locked scripts or sentence-level editing. NotebookLM remains best understood as a source-based AI briefing and listening tool that can produce podcast-like conversations.
