Google Podcasts is no longer available. Google’s suggested destination was YouTube Music, and listeners could also export subscriptions as an OPML file for import into a compatible podcast app. If a show is missing from YouTube Music, its RSS feed can be added there.
What happened to Google Podcasts?
YouTube announced on December 7, 2023, that Google Podcasts would remain available for listening in the U.S. through March 2024. The transition tools for migrating to YouTube Music or exporting subscriptions were available through July 2024. Those dates have passed; they describe the U.S. shutdown and transition period, not an upcoming deadline. YouTube’s announcement also described YouTube Music as its new podcast destination.
How to move your subscriptions
Move them to YouTube Music
Google offered a migration option to transfer subscriptions to YouTube Music. This is the most direct route for listeners who want to follow Google’s proposed transition. The announcement documents subscription migration, but does not establish that playback history or every feature carried over unchanged.
Export an OPML file for another app
The alternative was exporting subscriptions as an OPML file. OPML is useful only if the destination app supports importing it; check that app’s current help pages before choosing it. An export moves subscription information, not a guarantee of identical listening history or functionality. Google described the migration and OPML options in its December 2023 announcement.

What should you use instead?
The best fit depends on whether you want a dedicated podcast app or prefer podcasts inside a broader music and video service. Before settling on an app, verify two practical details: that it can import your OPML file, and whether it can add shows by RSS if a feed is missing from its catalog.

Spotify’s documentation explains that creators must submit shows separately to services beyond Spotify, including Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music; it lists Pocket Casts among distribution platforms. That is about creator distribution, not evidence that listeners can import Google Podcasts OPML into Spotify or Pocket Casts. Spotify’s creator documentation therefore cannot settle which app is right for your exported subscriptions.

How to handle a show that is missing
If you choose YouTube Music and cannot find a podcast, Google’s announcement offered RSS as a fallback: add the show to your library using its RSS feed URL. Look for the feed link on the podcast publisher’s official site. Other apps may also support RSS, but confirm that capability in their current documentation rather than assuming it.

YouTube’s September 2023 post positioned YouTube Music as the new podcast destination. It cited Edison’s 2023 survey finding that 23% of weekly podcast users in the U.S. said YouTube was their most frequently used podcast service, compared with 4% for Google Podcasts. Those figures are dated survey context, not current market-share statistics. The post does not establish that YouTube Music offers the same features or experience as Google Podcasts or a dedicated podcast app.
