Google Play Movies’ holiday deal was a limited-time promotion reported on December 24, 2016—not a current offer. It advertised one $0.99 movie rental or one movie purchase at 50% off per Google Play account, with the promotion reported to run through January 23, 2017.
What the holiday promotion offered
Gabriel Brangers reported the deal for Chrome Unboxed on December 24, 2016. According to that report, each Google Play account could use the offer for one rental and one purchase; the wording did not require choosing only one of the two.

Chrome Unboxed’s December 24, 2016 report named Suicide Squad and Jason Bourne as examples of new releases included in the promotion.
How the rental and purchase differed
The rental was a fixed promotional price of $0.99. The purchase offer instead reduced the movie’s purchase price by half. The report does not establish that the two options had identical terms beyond its statement that SD and HD were covered, so it should not be read as a complete comparison of viewing or ownership conditions.

Can you still redeem it?
No current availability is established by the report. Its stated end date, January 23, 2017, has passed, and it does not verify whether a historical code still works or whether Google has introduced a replacement promotion. The $0.99 and 50%-off terms describe that specific holiday deal, not Google Play’s usual movie prices.
