Google Play Music is no longer available. Google phased out the Android and web service in 2020 and made YouTube Music its successor. If you did not transfer your library or save your files during the migration period, there is no generally available Google Play Music transfer workflow to rely on today. You may still be able to find purchases or music you previously moved, depending on the account and copies you kept.
What happened to Google Play Music?
Google Play Music combined a paid on-demand music catalog with a personal music locker: users could stream licensed tracks, upload their own files, buy digital music, and organize songs into playlists and libraries. It also offered stations, recommendations, listening history, and podcasts in its later years, with access through Android, the web, smart speakers, and other Google-connected devices.
Google consolidated its music strategy around YouTube Music. The successor brought together official releases with music videos, live performances, covers, remixes, and other YouTube-native material. Google presented it as a way to carry forward parts of the Play Music experience while drawing on YouTube’s broader music content—not as an exact copy of the old service. The products differ in interface, catalog organization, library management, and how uploads and recommendations work. Google’s announcement described YouTube Music’s mix of official songs, albums, playlists, artist radio, remixes, live performances, covers, and music videos (Google’s YouTube Music announcement).
Keeping two overlapping Google music services would also have meant maintaining separate products and could confuse users about which one to use. Google’s official status page now says Play Music is no longer available and directs users to YouTube Music (Google Play Music status page).

When did Google Play Music shut down?
There was no single worldwide shutdown moment: Google announced a phased wind-down by market, followed by the end of the service late in 2020.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| May 12, 2020 | Google announced a process for moving a Play Music library to YouTube Music (transfer announcement). |
| September 2020 | Google said access would begin ending in New Zealand and South Africa. |
| October 2020 | Google said other global markets would stop supporting streaming and use of the Play Music app. |
| By December 2020 | Google said YouTube Music would replace Play Music. The service was not intended to remain a way to access old libraries after the wind-down. |
The regional sequence and December target are from Google’s shutdown announcement; they should not be reduced to one date that applied identically in every country (Google’s phased shutdown announcement).
Can you still use Google Play Music?
No—not as a supported music-streaming service. The old Android app and web interface are not dependable ways to reach the service, and an installed app, cached page, or old APK does not show that Google’s backend is still available. Google’s current status page directs users to YouTube Music.

Google’s transfer process was a historical migration, not a standing option. Its 2020 announcement described a transfer period through December 2020, and the service is now unavailable. If you did not transfer or download your content during that period, there is no current, generally available Google Play Music transfer workflow to rely on.
Google said the process could move uploaded and purchased music, playlists, liked and disliked content, albums and songs in a library, personal taste preferences, listening history, and billing or subscription information where applicable. That stated scope does not guarantee that every item is present, matched identically, or recoverable in a current account. Streaming-catalog saves, purchases, personal files, and subscription offline downloads are different kinds of content and may not behave alike.

How to look for old purchases, uploads, and playlists
Start with the account and copies you control. A missing track can reflect a different signed-in account, a licensing or regional change, an alternate version being matched, or an incomplete transfer; not every missing item can be restored.
- Sign in to the original Google account. A different account can make a transferred library or purchase history appear empty.
- Open YouTube Music and check your Library. Look for the music and playlists you remember transferring, including any personal uploads area available in your account.
- Check Google purchase history and old receipts. These can help establish which account made a purchase, but do not guarantee that every former purchase will appear in the modern music interface.
- Search your own storage. Check the computer, phone, SD card, external drive, and cloud backups you used before the shutdown for files you downloaded or kept locally.
- Use official support for an account-specific question. If a purchase or completed migration is missing, contact Google through its official support channels. Do not assume support can restore an old library.
Subscription offline downloads are not the same as purchased tracks or files you own: downloads tied to a streaming subscription are access-controlled. If personal files were never saved elsewhere and are no longer available in your account, recovery may not be possible.

Google lists access across phones, desktop, smart speakers, smart TVs, cars, watches, and integrations such as Google Maps and Waze. What the free tier includes
Google describes ad-supported listening with on-demand playback for songs, music videos, and podcasts, plus queueing, repeat, unlimited skipping, Samples, and Music Tuner. Podcast behavior can differ from music; creator-embedded promotions may still appear in podcasts even for Premium members.
What Music Premium adds
Google lists ad-free music, background play for music, audio-only playback, offline music downloads, Smart Downloads where supported, and switching between audio and video versions of available content as Premium benefits. YouTube Music Premium is the music-focused plan; YouTube Premium includes YouTube’s broader ad-free and background-play benefits as well as YouTube Music. No current price is stated here because prices and plan availability vary by country and billing channel and can change. Check Google’s current membership offer for your location.
Uploading your own music
YouTube Music continues to support personal music uploads; Google’s help resources cover uploads, and its app listings describe uploading music from a device (YouTube Music Help; YouTube Music on the App Store). An upload is not a purchase or a new license: it is personal-library content, separate from the licensed catalog. Its metadata, playback, and sharing behavior may differ from catalog tracks. Keep local backups rather than treating a cloud upload as your only copy.

Google Play Music vs. YouTube Music
| Area | Google Play Music | YouTube Music |
|---|---|---|
| Current status | Discontinued; Google says it is no longer available. | Google’s current music service. |
| Catalog | Licensed music catalog. | Licensed music plus YouTube-native material, including videos, live performances, covers, and remixes. |
| Personal uploads | A central part of the product. | Uploads are still supported, but the library and workflow differ. |
| Videos | Secondary to the music service. | Integrated into the broader YouTube music experience. |
| Interface and discovery | Older Google Play design and library model. | YouTube-style discovery and library; recommendations and organization are not identical. |
| Offline and background listening | Available under old paid plans. | Music downloads and background music play are Premium benefits. |
| Purchases | Google Play music purchases were part of the historic product. | Primarily a subscription and catalog service; check the original Google account and records for old purchases. |
| Podcasts | Supported in its later years. | Podcast support exists, but podcast behavior and promotions can differ from music. |
The table describes the products, not a promise that every legacy item or feature migrated one-for-one.
Which music service is the best replacement?
Choose based on what you used Play Music for. Catalog size alone will not solve the problem if your priority is recovering personal files or keeping a Google-connected setup.
- Choose YouTube Music if you want Google account integration, YouTube performances and videos alongside official tracks, personal uploads, or use with Google services. Its search can mix official audio with videos, covers, remixes, and user-uploaded recordings, and its interface is not the old Play Music library.
- Consider Spotify if discovery, playlists, social/listening features, and broad device support matter most. Spotify’s U.S. Premium page listed Individual at $12.99/month, Student at $6.99/month, Duo at $18.99/month, and Family at $21.99/month when observed; prices and promotions can change (Spotify Premium U.S. plans). Spotify is not a Google-native music locker and does not solve recovery of old Play Music uploads.
- Consider Apple Music if you use Apple devices or prioritize lossless audio, spatial audio, or Apple Music Classical. Apple says the service also works on Android, Windows, smart TVs, Sonos, Amazon Echo, and Google Nest devices. Its U.S. page listed a Student plan at $6.99/month when observed; verify current plans and prices directly (Apple Music). It is a weaker match if YouTube-native content or a Google-style upload workflow is central to your needs.
If you already pay for YouTube Premium, check which YouTube Music benefits your plan includes before buying a separate music subscription. For any service, verify current local pricing, plan terms, device support, and upload features before switching.
