Google DeepMind announced Lyria on November 16, 2023, as a model for generating and transforming music, including tracks with vocals. It was not an open, downloadable product or a general-purpose chatbot launch: Google introduced it through limited experiments and collaborations with YouTube. Since then, the Lyria family has evolved into newer models and tools, with availability and capabilities depending on the specific Google product.
What Google announced in 2023
Google DeepMind described Lyria as its most advanced music-generation model at the time. The announcement paired the model with two YouTube experiments: Dream Track, for creating music clips for Shorts, and Music AI Tools, a set of collaborative experiments aimed at musicians and producers. Google’s announcement framed these tools as ways to explore and develop musical ideas, not as replacements for artists.
Generating convincing music is a demanding task for an AI system. A coherent track must coordinate melody, rhythm, instrumentation, arrangement, vocals and lyrics, while maintaining timing and a sense of structure over time. Lyria’s significance lay in Google’s attempt to combine those elements with controls for musical style and performance.
What Lyria could do
In its original description, Google said Lyria could generate music with instrumentals and vocals across a range of styles, from jazz and heavy metal to techno and opera. It could also transform musical material, continue an existing idea, and respond to more nuanced direction about style and performance. Related Music AI Tools demonstrations included turning a hummed melody into an instrumental idea and exploring arrangements or sounds.

These statements describe the model and research demonstrations, not a promise that every Google interface offered every capability. What a user can do depends on the product, model version and access level. A demonstrated continuation or transformation workflow should not be assumed to be present in Gemini or every developer API.
Dream Track and Music AI Tools were different experiments
Dream Track was designed for YouTube Shorts creators to generate short clips in the style or voice of participating artists. Google presented it as an artist-partnered, controlled experiment—not permission to imitate any performer at will. The launch description emphasized collaboration with artists and YouTube.
Music AI Tools were pitched toward musicians, producers and songwriters. The idea was to help with tasks such as turning a hummed tune into an instrumental starting point, extending material or exploring possible arrangements. That distinction matters: the tools were positioned as support for a musician’s creative process, rather than simply an automated song factory.

Watermarking helps with provenance, not ownership
Google said it embeds SynthID in music created or edited with its systems. SynthID is an imperceptible watermark intended to help identify AI-generated audio. Google’s later Lyria materials continue to describe SynthID use; its Vertex AI information also references C2PA support for Lyria 3 outputs.
Neither a watermark nor a provenance label is a copyright license. It does not, by itself, establish who owns a recording, grant commercial permission, or settle whether an output is too similar to protected material. Detection should not be treated as infallible after compression, remixing, re-recording or other transformations. Users still need to check the terms for the specific service and account they use.
How Lyria has evolved
- November 16, 2023: Google announced Lyria alongside Dream Track and Music AI Tools. The announcement was a research-and-experiment launch, not unrestricted public access.
- October 23, 2024: Google introduced additional music-creation tools, including MusicFX DJ, Music AI Sandbox and YouTube Shorts integrations. Google’s later account says tools became powered by Lyria and Lyria RealTime.
- April 24, 2025: Google announced broader Music AI Sandbox access and identified Lyria 2 as its latest model in that product. The update concerned an evolving set of musician-focused tools.
- February 18, 2026: Lyria 3 began rolling out in beta in Gemini, generating 30-second tracks from text or images. Google’s launch post describes that initial consumer experience.
- March 25, 2026: Google announced Lyria 3 Pro, with tracks of up to three minutes, and access through products including Gemini, Google AI Studio, Gemini API, Vertex AI, Google Vids and ProducerAI. See the Lyria 3 Pro announcement and developer update.
- As of August 2026: Google DeepMind’s Lyria model page identifies Lyria 3.5 as the latest model family entry and highlights improvements in musicality, lyrics, vocal quality and variable song lengths.
That history is why “Lyria” needs a version and product context. A 30-second Gemini generation, a three-minute Lyria 3 Pro output and a Music AI Sandbox experiment are not necessarily the same workflow or feature set.

How to access Lyria now
Gemini app
For a casual creator, Gemini is the most direct route where the feature is available. Open gemini.google.com, ask Gemini to create a music track, then describe the sound you want or provide an image where image prompting is supported. Review the result and use the interface’s available download or sharing controls. The original Lyria 3 Gemini feature generated 30-second tracks; later models and product rollouts may differ.
Availability can vary by country, language, age, account, platform and rollout status. If the feature does not appear, consult Google’s current Gemini music-generation help page rather than assuming every account has access.
Google AI Studio and Gemini API
Developers can prototype with Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro through Google AI Studio and the Gemini API, subject to the models’ supported inputs and access conditions. Google identifies Lyria 3 for shorter clips and Lyria 3 Pro for longer full-song generation. Consult the current music-generation documentation for model IDs, input formats, output handling and examples; those details can change.

Do not assume an API call is universally free. AI Studio may allow experimentation, while API usage can be billed separately according to the account and service. A Gemini consumer subscription does not automatically mean unlimited API use. Check Gemini API pricing before building around a cost assumption.
Vertex AI and creator experiments
Vertex AI is the cloud route for businesses and developers integrating generation into applications or media workflows. Google lists Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro in public preview on Vertex AI; see its Vertex AI overview and live pricing page. Public-preview availability is not the same as a guaranteed production service.

Which Lyria path makes sense?

Lyria may suit creators already working in Google’s ecosystem, developers who need Google APIs, or teams exploring quick clips, demos and mood beds. It may be a poor fit for someone who needs a mature DAW-like editor, detailed stem manipulation, local or open-weight deployment, reliably unrestricted access, or extensive section-by-section arrangement control. Generated audio may still need editing, mixing and mastering in a digital audio workstation.
Limits, rights and practical expectations
A generated vocal is not the same as dependable professional songwriting. Lyrics may be repetitive, clichéd or inconsistent; a longer generation does not guarantee an editable composition with precise control over every section. Prompts asking for a living artist’s voice, recognizable recordings or copyrighted lyrics may be blocked, changed or yield a result unlike the request. Dream Track’s participating-artist approach should not be confused with general permission to imitate performers.
Google’s provenance tools are useful signals, not a substitute for rights review. Before releasing or monetizing a track, check the applicable product terms, account entitlement, usage limits and platform policies. A newly synthesized-sounding output is not automatically legally original or cleared for every commercial use. Product labels such as beta and public preview also mean that features, quality, pricing and availability may change.
For pricing context, Google’s Vertex AI pricing page listed, as observed on August 18, 2026, $0.04 per 30-second Lyria 3 clip and $0.08 per Lyria 3 Pro full song up to three minutes; it listed Lyria 2 at $0.06 per 30 seconds. These are service-specific price signals, not a universal consumer price, and should be checked against the live Google Cloud pricing page.
