If you want prerecorded videos to run continuously on YouTube, Google Compute Engine (GCE) is one way to do it—but it is a self-managed virtual machine, not a streaming service. The practical alternatives are a dedicated cloud streaming service such as StreamNeo, other managed 24/7 services YouTube identifies, or a different cloud video-processing platform for more involved productions. Choose based on who will operate the system, what kind of stream you need, and the full cost—not on a VM availability figure alone.
What counts as an alternative to Google Compute Engine?
These options solve related but different problems. A virtual machine gives you general-purpose computing resources that you configure. A managed streaming service is designed to keep a YouTube stream running with less server administration. A cloud video-processing service targets production workflows that may need more than replaying a prerecorded video.
YouTube explains the basic role of an encoder: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” An encoder can be software or standalone hardware. The right alternative therefore depends on whether you need a configurable server, an always-on replay service, or managed video processing.
Alternatives for prerecorded video streams
For a channel that needs prerecorded content to play continuously, compare managed streaming services with a self-managed VM. YouTube’s encoder page identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos and Upstream as a cloud studio for easy 24/7 live video streaming. These are managed-service options to evaluate, not general-purpose VM providers.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- StreamNeo — #1 for a straightforward always-on prerecorded YouTube stream. It loops uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud, so your computer does not need to stay on; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. See StreamNeo for the service details.
- Gyre — a YouTube-listed cloud option for prerecorded 24/7 streaming. YouTube describes it as a tool for continuously streaming prerecorded videos. Check Gyre directly for current features, pricing, and availability before choosing it.
- Upstream — a YouTube-listed cloud studio for 24/7 live video streaming. Its listing describes a managed studio rather than a general-purpose VM. Confirm that its current workflow fits your prerecorded content and channel requirements.
The YouTube encoder listing establishes that these services are relevant categories, but it does not provide a like-for-like comparison of their prices, transfer allowances, or features. Verify those details with each provider.
When a self-managed VM still makes sense
GCE remains relevant when you want general compute flexibility and are prepared to select and maintain the operating system, encoder, restart behavior, and monitoring yourself. It is a different trade-off from a service built specifically for continuous streaming: more control can mean more configuration and ongoing operational work.

Google states a 99.95% single-instance availability SLA for memory-optimized VM families and 99.9% for other VM families on its current product page, accessed in 2026. These are Google’s stated availability commitments for VM instances, not a guarantee that the encoder process, network path, YouTube ingest, or finished stream will be uninterrupted.
Other cloud video-processing options
AWS Elemental MediaLive is a different category from a basic VM. YouTube lists it as a verified encoder, and AWS describes it in workflows for 24×7 live channels. That makes it worth considering when a production needs managed video processing, but the available official material does not establish that it is the lowest-cost equivalent of one VM or the best fit for a simple one-stream replay.

YouTube also lists Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K as hardware streaming equipment. The listing alone does not establish it as a replacement for a cloud VM that continuously replays prerecorded content.
How to choose: a practical checklist
- Match the workflow. Decide whether you are replaying uploaded videos, producing a live camera show, or building a broadcast-oriented workflow. The encoder options cover different uses.
- Decide who operates it. With a VM, you maintain the OS, encoder, restart behavior, and monitoring. A dedicated cloud service is positioned to reduce that infrastructure work.
- Compare total cost, not just compute. Include the VM, sustained outbound data transfer, storage, any software licensing, and the time required to configure and monitor it. For managed services, check what the quoted plan includes.
- Check the region and current terms. Confirm that the provider offers a suitable region and verify current prices and outbound transfer allowances directly. The available official information does not support a current numerical ranking of VM providers.
- Separate component availability from stream continuity. An instance can meet its availability terms while an encoder process, network connection, or YouTube ingest fails. Identify what needs monitoring and how it will recover.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded content from the cloud; no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
