The Norwegian film gradually turns that discomfort into a story about manipulation and coercion. Its hook is hard to forget; whether the shift into more conventional horror matches that promise is the central question.
What is Good Boy about?
Written and directed by Viljar Bøe, Good Boy is a Norwegian-language film from 2022, running 1 hour 19 minutes. Rotten Tomatoes classifies it as mystery/thriller, horror, and comedy, and lists Saban Films as distributor. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page also lists an R rating for some violent content and language.
Student Sigrid starts dating Christian, a wealthy man whose housemate Frank dresses and acts as Christian’s dog. The arrangement initially reads as an unnerving, almost comic oddity. As Sigrid learns more, the story raises a darker question: is Frank choosing this life freely, or is Christian controlling him?
Does the premise work as comedy or horror?
The film’s first stretch gets much of its effect from the clash between ordinary dating expectations and Christian’s extraordinary household. The oddity is the joke, but it is also a source of unease: Sigrid has to decide how to interpret a situation that seems at once absurd and troubling.

That uncertainty gives way to a sharper focus on power. The Guardian’s Phil Hoad describes the story becoming increasingly paranoid about manipulation and grooming, before its second half moves toward more conventional horror. Hoad praises its boundary-pushing premise while arguing that the execution lacks enough finesse to match it. Read The Guardian’s review for that assessment.
Brandon Ledet’s Swampflix review emphasizes the dark comedy and reads the story as one about control and wealth. Ledet also notes that the humor and horror draw on discomfort with kink imagery. These are distinct critical readings, not a uniform verdict: the same tonal turn some viewers may find less surprising can still leave an uncomfortable aftertaste.

What the film’s “puppy play” framing means
Here, the phrase refers to the fictional arrangement between Christian and Frank. The story’s tension depends on the possibility that what looks like a strange, consensual setup is actually shaped by coercion. That is a specific plot question—not a depiction that should be generalized to people who practice consensual kink in real life.
The most useful way to approach the film is to notice how it steers your judgment. At first, Frank’s behavior invites awkward laughter; as the power imbalance comes into focus, that laughter becomes harder to sustain. The movie’s discomfort comes from the gap between appearances and agency, even when its horror mechanics become more familiar.

Is Good Boy worth watching?
If you enjoy compact horror that takes an unusually strange premise seriously, Good Boy offers a memorable hook and a deliberately uneasy tonal progression. If you want the film to keep developing that premise in equally original ways, the second-half turn may feel more conventional than the setup promises. Its strongest discussion point is not simply the shock of the human-as-pet reveal, but how the story reframes it as a question of control.
