Good American Family is a scripted drama inspired by Natalia Grace’s story, not a documentary or a scene-by-scene record of events. The real case centered on a bitter dispute over Natalia’s age and the circumstances of her life after Kristine and Michael Barnett adopted her. Her adoption paperwork listed 2003 as her birth year; an Indiana court changed it to 1989 in 2012, and reporting says the year was restored to 2003 in 2023. Those legal changes do not, by themselves, establish her biological age. The Barnetts faced separate neglect cases: Michael was acquitted, and Kristine’s charges were dismissed before trial.
What is Good American Family—and how true is it?
Hulu describes Good American Family as a limited drama inspired by stories surrounding a Midwestern couple’s adoption of a girl with dwarfism. The series premiered on Hulu on March 19, 2025, and stars Ellen Pompeo, Mark Duplass, and Imogen Faith Reid. It is not a documentary, and its scenes should not be treated as proof that a disputed event happened exactly as shown.
The drama shifts perspectives, initially presenting events through the Barnetts’ point of view before giving more space to Natalia’s. The Associated Press described the show as nonlinear and reported that creator and co-showrunner Katie Robbins acknowledged changes for dramatic effect: “We were taking all of this research that we had and amplifying certain moments or adjusting certain moments for kind of dramatic license.”
That distinction matters because the real accounts conflict. The scripted series interprets and dramatizes those accounts; it does not settle which disputed allegations are true. The AP also identifies The Curious Case of Natalia Grace as a separate Investigation Discovery documentary series. A documentary and a scripted drama have different formats and purposes, and neither should be confused with a court’s findings.

What happened to Natalia Grace? The reported timeline
The following chronology reflects reporting by ABC and TIME. It distinguishes what those outlets report from allegations made by the people involved.
- 2008: ABC reported that Natalia was adopted from Ukraine by a New Hampshire couple and brought to the United States.
- 2010: According to ABC, that couple later put Natalia up for adoption, and the Barnetts adopted her. Her birth certificate gave 2003 as her birth year. The Barnetts later said that her behavior and physical development made them doubt her age; that was their stated belief, not an independently established fact.
- 2012: ABC reported that the Barnetts petitioned an Indiana court to change Natalia’s birth year from 2003 to 1989. The court granted the change without an evidentiary hearing and without a guardian representative for Natalia, according to the outlet. A court order changing a legal record is not itself a biological-age test.
- After the order: ABC reported that Natalia lived in apartments while the Barnetts moved to Canada with their biological children. The outlet also reported that a child-safety inquiry was closed after the age change, and that the Barnetts paid one year of rent at a later apartment but provided no further financial support. These are details reported by ABC, not findings established here as judicial rulings.
- Later years: Natalia lived with Antwon and Cynthia Mans. TIME reported that the Mans family adopted her in 2023 and that her birth year was restored to 2003 that year.
- 2023 onward: TIME’s April 2025 follow-up said Natalia had left the Mans home in 2023 and was then living with Nicole and Vincent DePaul. That report establishes what TIME described at that time, not her current living situation.
What does the age dispute establish?
There are three distinct points that are easy to blur together: the birth year on Natalia’s adoption paperwork, the birth year entered under the 2012 court order, and the later restoration of the 2003 year. ABC and TIME reported that sequence. It explains how her legal records changed; it does not resolve her biological age.

TIME discussed a genetics or DNA test in documentary coverage that reportedly estimated Natalia’s age. That is a claim reported in connection with the documentary, not a primary laboratory report reviewed here and not a court determination. Without the underlying medical or forensic records, it would be too strong to present the test or the legal order as conclusive proof of her age.
What did the Barnetts and Natalia say?
The Barnetts alleged that Natalia was older than her documents stated and described threatening behavior. Natalia disputed important allegations and said she had been abandoned without adequate support. ABC and TIME recount competing claims and testimony, but the reporting summarized here does not independently substantiate every alleged incident.

For that reason, it is important to keep attribution clear: the Barnetts alleged; Natalia said; prosecutors argued. A claim made by one side is not the same as a court finding, and the drama’s portrayal is not independent corroboration.
Were Michael and Kristine Barnett convicted?
No. Both were charged separately with neglect in 2019. ABC reported that Michael was acquitted by an Indiana jury in late 2022. Kristine’s charges were dismissed before trial, with the prosecutor citing insufficient evidence. Neither was convicted in these cases.

Those outcomes resolve the criminal charges as reported. They do not settle every factual dispute about Natalia’s age, care, or what happened in the household. The reporting summarized here does not include the underlying court orders or primary medical records.

Good American Family can introduce viewers to a complicated story, but it is a dramatized interpretation. For factual context, distinguish three kinds of material: the series’ scripted scenes, statements and allegations attributed to the people involved, and reported or legally established outcomes. In particular, do not treat a change to a birth record as proof of biological age, or a dramatic scene as confirmation of a contested allegation.
