There is no official ranking that compares every version of Goku across Dragon Ball Z, GT, and Super. This is an editorial ranking of major named transformations and combat states, ordered by peak demonstrated capability in their own stories—not a universal canon power scale. It excludes fusions, game-only variants, temporary borrowed power, and minor Super Saiyan grades. The placement of GT’s Super Saiyan 4 against Super forms is especially debatable because they belong to separate continuities.
How this ranking works
The official Bandai Namco character roster lists Goku forms under separate series and saga groupings, including GT, Super, and DAIMA. That confirms the range of forms the franchise recognizes, but it does not rank their strength. The list below focuses on the major forms and states named in the official materials cited here, plus the familiar foundational transformations needed to make the progression readable.
Rank is based on what a form or state lets Goku do at his peak, while accounting for control and known limitations. It is not a claim that each new form always beats every older one in every circumstance. No official cross-form power statistic or definitive all-continuity order is established in these sources.
Goku’s forms, from weakest to strongest
-
Great Ape
Goku’s Great Ape transformation draws on his Saiyan tail and the power of the Oozaru form. It is a major early-series power increase, but its size and loss of fine control make it less adaptable than his later humanoid transformations. It also supplies the Great Ape power that informs Super Saiyan 4, though the two are not equivalent states.

-
Kaio-ken
Kaio-ken is a technique, not a Super Saiyan transformation. It lets Goku amplify his fighting ability, but it places strain on his body and is best understood as a risky burst rather than a dependable new baseline. The official roster names “Kaioken Goku,” but a roster entry does not establish a fixed place for the technique against every transformation.
-
Super Saiyan
Goku’s first Super Saiyan transformation marks a substantial step beyond his earlier fighting states. Its importance is not just raw force: with training, he learns to use it more steadily than the initial, emotionally charged transformation. It becomes the foundation for later Super Saiyan forms.

Super Saiyan 2
Super Saiyan 2 is a further advance over Super Saiyan, with a sharper, more forceful output. It is a distinct transformation, not merely another name for the original Super Saiyan state. Its place here reflects the series’ progression, rather than a numerical power comparison.
-
Super Saiyan 3
Super Saiyan 3 is a more extreme transformation than Super Saiyan 2, recognizable by Goku’s long hair and altered appearance. Its high output comes with a serious stamina drawback, so peak capability and practical usefulness are not the same thing. The official roster lists Super Saiyan 3 Goku among its named forms.

Super Saiyan 4 (Dragon Ball GT)
Super Saiyan 4 is an GT transformation that draws on Great Ape power while returning Goku to a more compact fighting form. The DRAGON BALL OFFICIAL SITE’s overview says it first appeared in the GT anime during the Shadow Dragon Saga. Within GT, it is Goku’s defining high-level transformation. Its placement below Super Saiyan God here is an editorial cross-continuity choice, not an official verdict: the source describes the form but does not compare it with Super’s god forms.
-
Super Saiyan God
Super Saiyan God gives Goku access to godly ki and marks a new branch beyond the familiar Super Saiyan sequence. It is not simply “Super Saiyan 4 but stronger”: it belongs to Dragon Ball Super and operates in a different continuity from GT. The ranking places it above Super Saiyan 4 as an editorial comparison of peak demonstrated capability, with no official one-to-one scale to settle the question.

Super Saiyan God SS (Super Saiyan Blue)
Super Saiyan God SS, commonly called Super Saiyan Blue, combines the Super Saiyan transformation with Super Saiyan God power. The official overview describes it as a Super Saiyan God going Super Saiyan and associates its debut with the Golden Frieza Saga of the Super anime. “God SS” and “Blue” are two names for the same transformation, not separate rungs.
-
Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken
Blue Kaio-ken layers the Kaio-ken technique onto Super Saiyan Blue; it is a combination, not an independent transformation. The official overview describes Goku using Kaio-ken while in Super Saiyan God SS, with a red aura over the blue aura. Its increased burst potential earns it a place above Blue alone in this ranking, but the technique’s strain means it should not be treated as a free, permanent upgrade.

Ultra Instinct -Sign-
Ultra Instinct -Sign- is an incomplete version of Ultra Instinct, characterized by instinctive reactions and a blue-white aura. The official overview says its imperfect nature means it cannot be held for long. That limitation matters: it can give Goku extraordinary defensive and responsive ability, but it is not the same as the later, more complete Ultra Instinct.
-
Ultra Instinct
Ultra Instinct is the strongest state in this ranking because it represents the fullest named Ultra Instinct form in the scope considered here. The official roster distinguishes Ultra Instinct Goku from Ultra Instinct -Sign- Goku, supporting the distinction between the incomplete state and the later form. The sources do not provide a numerical comparison or guarantee that Ultra Instinct wins every matchup; the placement reflects its peak demonstrated role in Super.

Where the ranking is most debatable
- Super Saiyan 4 versus God forms: Super Saiyan 4 belongs to GT, while Super Saiyan God, Blue, and Ultra Instinct belong to Super. No official cross-continuity scale settles their relative strength.
- Kaio-ken combinations: Kaio-ken is a technique that can be layered onto another state, so Blue Kaio-ken is listed as a combination rather than treated as a wholly separate transformation family.
- Peak power versus practical use: A form with greater peak output may be difficult to maintain. Super Saiyan 3’s stamina burden and Ultra Instinct -Sign-’s short duration are part of their real combat value.
