Vogue’s roundup grouped 13 attendees in see-through, semi-transparent and illusion styles, including gowns with opaque layers underneath. The differences in coverage, embellishment and provenance matter as much as the shared sheer effect.
What “naked dress” meant at the 2024 Met Gala
Vogue framed its event-specific gallery as a selection of “naked dresses and sheer looks.” The phrase is an editorial umbrella: some outfits revealed lingerie, while others used transparent fabric over a more opaque layer. They were not all equally revealing.
The gala celebrated the Costume Institute exhibition Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. Floral and garden-inspired details appeared on some sheer looks, but that connection does not establish that every dress was designed as a literal interpretation of the exhibition theme. Vogue’s roundup and its complete red-carpet gallery provide the event framing.
The stars Vogue included in its sheer-looks roundup
Vogue’s gallery featured Emily Ratajkowski, Greta Lee, Kelsea Ballerini, Zoe Saldaña, Elle Fanning, Phoebe Dynevor, Kim Kardashian, Janelle Monáe, Benedetta Piccoli, Eve Hewson, Brie Larson and Michelle Williams. Its enumeration is a roundup count, not a measure of how common sheer dressing was across the fashion industry.

Transparency and coverage
The looks occupied different points on the coverage spectrum. Vogue describes Ratajkowski’s gown as semi-transparent, and Kelsea Ballerini wore a see-through Michael Kors Collection look. Brie Larson’s outfit demonstrated another approach: an opaque layer beneath a sheer outer layer. A transparent overlay can create a sheer effect without exposing the body to the same degree as lingerie-revealing styling.
Embellishment and motif
Details helped distinguish the outfits beyond their transparency. Ratajkowski’s dress was crystalized; Ballerini’s Michael Kors Collection look featured pink and orange floral motifs. Vogue’s introduction also describes embroidered and metallic sheer styling in the roundup, but those details should not be assigned to a specific attendee unless the gallery identifies the look that way.

Custom design versus archival fashion
Kim Kardashian wore a custom John Galliano look, according to Vogue. The roundup separately mentions a metallic Maison Margiela Artisanal look with a cinched corset and a see-through embroidered gown; those descriptions are not details of Kardashian’s John Galliano outfit.
Ratajkowski’s gown had a different kind of distinction: it was a rare Fall-Winter 2001 Atelier Versace archive dress, rather than a newly made retail gown. Vogue says it was sourced from Los Angeles-based Tab Vintage. She accessorized it with more than 108 carats of yellow diamonds from Chopard and René Caovilla shoes. Vogue’s profile of Ratajkowski’s look gives those provenance and styling details.

Jennifer Lopez’s Schiaparelli gown was another near-naked look
Jennifer Lopez is a related example, though she is not one of the 13 attendees in Vogue’s naked-and-sheer gallery. The Associated Press separately characterized her Schiaparelli gown as “near-naked.” That description corroborates the broader red-carpet trend without expanding Vogue’s gallery list. The Associated Press’s event coverage reports on her look.

A general sheer evening dress can be an inspired-by option, but it is not a direct recreation of these custom and archival gowns. When comparing alternatives, consider how transparent the outer fabric is, whether the design includes an opaque underlayer, and whether the effect comes from crystals, embroidery or floral motifs. The documented outfits also vary in provenance, from custom design to vintage archival fashion; a standard retail dress will not necessarily reproduce those details.
