The first-look images of Gladiator II, published by Vanity Fair on July 1, 2024, introduced Pedro Pascal as Marcus Acacius, a Roman general whose story connects the sequel to Maximus while setting him on a collision course with Lucius. The film’s publicity describes Acacius as a former junior officer trained under Maximus—but Pascal and director Ridley Scott also stress that he is not simply a replacement for the original film’s hero.
What the first-look images show
Paramount’s official Gladiator II page identifies Pascal as Marcus Acacius. The July 1, 2024 Vanity Fair feature paired promotional stills with interviews and story details, presenting Acacius as a major military figure in the sequel. ABC News also reported the first-look release that day.

Ridley Scott described Acacius as “a man in deep regret with his life and doesn’t know where to go with it,” in Vanity Fair’s July 1, 2024 interview. That description frames him less as a straightforward triumphant commander than as a man wrestling with the consequences and direction of his life.
Did Marcus Acacius train under Maximus?
According to the film’s story information and interviews published with the first look, Acacius served as a junior officer under Maximus and learned from him. That connection is part of the sequel’s fictional continuity, not a claim about Roman history.

- From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome.
Pascal described the influence this way: Acacius “learned from the best, so of course this code of honor is ingrained into his training and into his existence. But at the end of the day, he’s a different person.” The link to Maximus is therefore an inheritance of training and an honor code, not proof that the two characters share the same temperament or path.
How Acacius connects the sequel to Lucius
The attack on Numidia supplies the immediate story link between Acacius and Lucius: Acacius is a Roman commander involved in the campaign, while Lucius is drawn into its consequences. The setup places their conflict within the sequel’s larger question of what Rome’s military power costs the people caught beneath it.

Scott also criticized the film’s rulers in remarks reported by ABC News on July 1, 2024: “The people who are in charge are out of their minds, and everyone is too afraid to contradict,” he said. That comment gives context to Acacius’s position in the story, but the available first-look material does not establish every detail of his motives or how the conflict resolves.

The most useful distinction is between influence and identity. Acacius’s training under Maximus gives the sequel a direct connection to the first film, but Scott’s description of regret and Pascal’s emphasis on Acacius being “a different person” point toward a character with his own burdens and choices. The publicity presents him as a new figure shaped by the earlier hero, not as a replica.

The Associated Press described Gladiator II as set a couple of decades after the first film and likewise identified Pascal as Roman general Marcus Acacius. Read together with the first-look interviews, that time gap helps explain why the sequel can carry Maximus’s legacy forward through Acacius while centering a distinct conflict involving Lucius.
