1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShort answer: You can change a playlist’s cover directly on an iPhone, but you generally cannot replace the official artwork of an Apple Music catalog album from the Music app. For imported or personally owned music, edit the artwork on a Mac or Windows PC, then synchronize it.
Identify the artwork you want to change
| What you are viewing | Can you change it on iPhone? | Correct method |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music catalog album | Generally no | The official cover is supplied through Apple Music. You can customize a playlist containing the album, but not normally the catalog album itself. |
| Your playlist | Yes | Use Music > Library > Playlists > More > Edit. |
| Imported or personally owned music | Not through the iPhone Music app | Edit the track metadata on a Mac or PC, then sync the library. |
These are separate layers: changing playlist artwork does not change the artwork shown for the albums and songs inside that playlist.
Change a playlist cover on iPhone
Apple’s current iPhone guide documents this workflow for playlists. Menu wording can vary by iOS version, device language, playlist type and account status; the guide reflects the iOS 26-era interface as of August 18, 2026.
- Open Music.
- Tap Library, then Playlists.
- Open the playlist you own.
- Tap the More button.
- Tap Edit, then tap the artwork or camera control. If shown, choose Edit Cover Art.
- Choose an Apple template, Take Photo, Choose from Library, or a file on the device.
- Tap Done.
See Apple’s instructions at Create, edit, and delete playlists. On a collaborative playlist, the owner has the broadest editing permissions; other participants may not see the same controls.

Can you replace an Apple Music album’s official cover?
Not as a normal listener-side feature in the iPhone Music app. Apple’s iPhone Music guide explains browsing and playing albums, while its artwork-editing instructions apply to playlists. There is no documented iPhone control for uploading a replacement cover to an Apple Music catalog album.
If you need a different visual, make a playlist containing the album and give that playlist your own cover. This changes only the playlist presentation. Pinning the album can also make it easier to find, but does not alter its official artwork.

Edit artwork for imported music
On a Mac
- Open Music and click Songs in the sidebar.
- Select every track that belongs to the album if you want one consistent cover.
- Choose Song > Get Info, then open Artwork.
- Click Add Artwork, select an image and click Open; you can also drag an image into the artwork area.
- Synchronize the changed library with your iPhone.
Apple documents JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF and Photoshop still images for this workflow. Apple also notes that WAV files must be converted before artwork can be added through the documented Mac process. Details are in Apple Music User Guide for Mac.
On Windows
Apple’s documented Windows procedure uses iTunes:

- Choose Edit > [Item] Info, then open Artwork.
- Click Add Artwork and select an image, or drag it into the artwork area.
- Sync the music to the iPhone.
Apple also distributes a Music app for some Windows installations, so labels and capabilities may differ from this iTunes path. The documented reference is iTunes for Windows.
Get the new artwork onto your iPhone
For a cloud-synchronized library, use Settings > Apps > Music and turn on Sync Library. The computer and iPhone must use the same Apple Account, and synchronization must finish before checking the result. Apple says library changes are distributed across devices when Sync Library is enabled; see the playlist guide above for the relevant account and sync guidance.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
For manually managed music, use the computer’s normal iPhone synchronization process. Editing a library record does not necessarily rewrite the original audio file; the result depends on whether the application writes embedded metadata or only updates its library database.
If the artwork does not appear
- No Edit button: Confirm that you opened a playlist you can edit, not an album. A collaborative playlist may restrict changes to its owner.
- Changed on the computer, unchanged on iPhone: Check the Apple Account, Sync Library, library membership and whether synchronization has completed.
- Only one song changed: Select all tracks in the album before applying shared artwork. Different album, artist or disc tags can also make tracks appear as separate albums.
- Image will not import: Try one of Apple’s documented still-image formats. On Mac, WAV files require conversion for this artwork workflow.
- Artwork reverted: Possible explanations include another library copy replacing the change, duplicate tracks, catalog matching, or checking a playlist while expecting album art to change. Apple does not publish one definitive cause for every reversion.
Design a cover that works at thumbnail size
- Use a square image and keep important text away from the edges.
- Choose high contrast and test the design when it is very small.
- Do not depend on fine details that disappear in the Music app.
- Keep a backup of the original and use images you own or are licensed to use.
What “Animated Art” does—and does not do
Apple Music subscribers can control animated album artwork at Settings > Apps > Music > Animated Art. This is a display preference for Apple-provided animation, not an upload tool for replacing an album cover. See Apple’s Animated Art settings.

For artists changing a public Apple Music release
Changing the cover of a released catalog title is a rights-holder and distribution task, handled through the artist, label, distributor or Apple Music provider process—not through a listener’s iPhone setting. Motion artwork has its own delivery workflow; Apple lists creation and delivery guidance at Apple Music Provider Support and Apple Music for Artists. Services such as Canva, Rotor Videos and Immersity AI are relevant to creating release visuals, not to overriding catalog art in your personal Music app.
Quick Recap
The practical answer
- Playlist: change the cover on iPhone.
- Apple Music catalog album: the listener generally cannot replace its official cover.
- Imported music: edit artwork on a Mac or PC, then sync it.
