It is not, by itself, a sign of poor hygiene or illness—and no girl is medically required to remove it.
Girls can grow underarm hair as a normal part of puberty. Its presence does not mean that a girl is unhygienic, unhealthy, or required to shave. Whether someone removes, trims, or leaves underarm hair natural is a personal decision shaped by comfort, appearance, culture, family expectations, religion, gender expression, and social pressure.
Underarm hair is a normal pubertal change
Underarm hair—also called axillary hair—commonly appears during puberty. Puberty does not begin at exactly the same age for everyone, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists includes underarm hair among ordinary physical changes in girls.
Underarm hair by itself is not evidence of a hormonal disorder, and it does not establish that a person needs medical treatment or hair removal. A photograph, a single observation, or a comparison with classmates cannot diagnose a health condition.

Does underarm hair mean someone is unclean?
No. Underarm hair and hygiene are separate issues. Body odor is more closely related to sweat, skin oils, bacteria, warmth, moisture, friction, clothing, and personal-care products than to whether hair is present. A person can wash regularly and have underarm hair, just as a person without underarm hair can still experience odor or skin irritation.
Hair can affect how moisture, deodorant, and bacteria remain on the skin or clothing, so people may notice different experiences. Those differences do not make one grooming choice automatically cleaner or healthier. There is no general medical rule that girls must shave their underarms.
Why do many women feel expected to remove it?
The expectation that women should have hairless underarms is a social and historical norm, not a biological requirement. In the United States, the modern hairlessness ideal became especially influential from roughly 1915 to 1945. Changing clothing styles exposed more of women’s legs and underarms, while advertising promoted shaving and other hair-removal products as part of feminine appearance and identity.
That history does not support the simplified claim that one razor company invented women’s underarm shaving. Commercial advertising helped normalize the practice, but clothing, marketing, gender expectations, peer reactions, family beliefs, and wider cultural changes all contributed.

Social pressure can feel real without making the body wrong
Research on social perception has found that visible body hair can affect how a woman is judged in certain study settings. In one experiment, a woman shown with visible leg and underarm hair received less favorable ratings on several interpersonal dimensions than the same woman shown without visible body hair. More favorable attitudes toward body hair were associated with feminist attitudes.
These findings help explain why a girl or woman may feel self-conscious about visible hair. They do not show that hairy women are less attractive, less pleasant, less feminine, or less worthy of respect. They describe other people’s learned judgments—not an objective quality of the person being judged.
Online comments and image-based discussions should be treated cautiously. They may reveal that people disagree, but they cannot establish what most people believe or provide reliable evidence about hygiene, health, or grooming prevalence.
Removing underarm hair and leaving it natural are both valid choices
There is no single correct answer. Someone may remove hair because they like the look, prefer the sensation, want less hair visible with particular clothing, follow a cultural or religious practice, or find grooming affirming. Someone else may leave it natural because it is more comfortable, costs less, takes less time, reduces shaving irritation, feels politically meaningful, or simply is not important to them.
Motives can overlap and change. A person may shave for one event and not another, stop shaving after irritation, or change their mind over time. A choice made freely is different from grooming demanded through teasing, shame, coercion, or the suggestion that a normal body part is dirty.

For younger readers, the practical message is simple: puberty-related body changes are normal, and grooming is optional. Parents, teachers, and caregivers can help by answering questions without embarrassment and by avoiding language that equates body hair with poor character or poor hygiene.
If someone chooses to shave, trim, wax, or tweeze
Hair removal is optional, but it can cause ordinary skin problems, including razor burn, irritation, ingrown hairs, and folliculitis. Underarm skin can be particularly sensitive because of friction, sweat, deodorants, and frequent movement.
- Use clean tools and do not share razors.
- Do not shave skin that is already irritated, broken, infected, or painful.
- If shaving, use a suitable lubricant such as shaving gel and avoid pressing hard.
- Stop if a product or technique causes burning, significant pain, or worsening irritation.
- Follow product directions for any wax, depilatory, or grooming device, and be especially cautious with sensitive skin.
Changing or avoiding irritating deodorants, soaps, detergents, and fragranced products may help when itching is caused by contact irritation. This is not a reason to assume that a particular brand or hair-removal method is necessary.
Anyone with worsening redness, pus, fever, severe pain, a spreading rash, persistent swelling, or a lump should seek medical advice rather than repeatedly treating the area at home.
When unusual hair growth deserves medical attention
Ordinary underarm hair does not need diagnosis. A health professional should be consulted if hair growth is sudden or unusually excessive, especially when it occurs with other signs that could suggest a hormonal issue. The relevant pattern, timing, family history, medications, menstrual changes, acne, and other symptoms matter; underarm hair alone is not enough to identify hirsutism or another condition.

Medical advice is also appropriate for persistent rash, pain, fever, swelling, discharge, or a lump. These symptoms may have many possible causes and should not be diagnosed from internet photographs or discussions.

Research on adult pubic-hair removal is sometimes cited in conversations about grooming, but it concerns a different body area and cannot be used as a prevalence estimate for girls’ or women’s underarm-hair removal. Similarly, evidence about adult grooming motivations does not determine what a child or teenager should do.
The more useful question is not whether every girl should look the same. It is whether she has accurate health information, freedom from shame, and the ability to make an age-appropriate choice without coercion. Underarm hair is biologically ordinary. Hair removal may be preferred by some people, but it is not a requirement for cleanliness, health, or respectability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it unhygienic for a girl to have armpit hair?
No. Underarm hair is a normal pubertal development, and its presence does not mean someone is dirty or unhealthy. Odor is influenced mainly by sweat, bacteria, skin oils, moisture, clothing, and personal-care products.

Do girls have to shave their armpits?
No. There is no universal medical requirement for girls to shave their underarms. A person may remove hair for appearance, comfort, culture, religion, or personal preference, but leaving it natural is also valid.
Does underarm hair mean a girl has a hormone problem?
Puberty timing varies. Underarm hair commonly appears during puberty, but the hair itself does not establish a specific disorder. Sudden or unusually excessive growth accompanied by other symptoms should be discussed with a health professional.
Can shaving armpit hair cause skin problems?
Shaving can cause razor burn, irritation, ingrown hairs, and folliculitis. Clean tools, no shared razors, lubricant, light pressure, and avoiding already irritated skin can reduce avoidable irritation, but no method is risk-free.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Girls’ underarm hair is a normal part of puberty. Leaving it natural is not inherently unclean, and removing it is not medically required. The best choice is the one made freely, with accurate information and attention to skin comfort; unusual growth or persistent symptoms should be discussed with a qualified health professional.
