GIPHY released its Celebrity Detector as an open-source project in 2019 to identify celebrities in images, GIFs and videos so its library could be indexed for search. It supported more than 2,300 celebrity identities, but the often-repeated “98% accuracy” headline needs qualification: GIPHY’s detailed announcement reported 98% precision on a specific crowdsourced dataset—not 98% accuracy on arbitrary faces or GIFs. The repository remains public, but it is a historical implementation, not a documented current GIPHY recognition API.
What GIPHY’s Celebrity Detector was built to do
The project addressed a catalog problem: a GIF is more useful in search when its content can be labeled with the people who appear in it. GIPHY’s model detected faces and predicted celebrity identities; those labels could then help make celebrity GIFs discoverable. It was not simply a GIF-finding tool, and it was not presented as a general-purpose service for identifying anyone.
GIPHY announced the project in March 2019 and published its model-related code, experiments and example workflows in a public repository under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. The project materials also included a list of supported celebrity labels and described a public demonstration and a 3D projection of the model’s work. The repository is available at GIPHY’s celeb-detection-oss project; its continued availability does not establish that the old demo or software works as a maintained service today.
What “over 2,300 famous faces” means
The figure refers to the model’s supported celebrity classes, not a universal ability to recognize every famous person. Someone absent from its label set could not reliably be returned by name. “Celebrity” here is a dataset category shaped by GIPHY’s catalog and search activity, not an objective or timeless list.

Contemporary reporting said GIPHY derived names from its top 50,000 searches across web, mobile and integration platforms, then supplemented less frequently appearing people with images found on the web. Images from GIPHY’s catalog supplied much of the training material. The team also used a separate similarity-based model to group images and reduce noisy or mislabeled examples. That process tied coverage to GIPHY’s historical audience and content: popularity influenced which identities had data and potentially how well they were represented. It does not mean the model was trained on every celebrity image online or reflects the celebrity landscape in 2026. VentureBeat’s 2019 report describes the data strategy.
How the recognition pipeline worked
GIPHY described a multi-stage process for turning moving images into searchable identity labels:
- Detect faces: A pretrained MTCNN face detector locates faces in an image or across frames of a GIF or video.
- Represent and classify faces: A convolutional neural network based on ResNet-50 generates facial feature vectors and celebrity predictions.
- Group repeated appearances: A clustering step groups similar face vectors, helping consolidate appearances of the same person across a sequence.
- Aggregate predictions: Predictions within a cluster are combined to produce one or more names with confidence scores.
- Annotate for search: Identity labels can be attached to the GIF content so a search for a person can return relevant material.
This frame-aware design can use more evidence than a single still image, but it also means more computation and post-processing. Clustering may merge two similar-looking people or split one person’s appearances into separate groups. A confidence score is a model output, not automatically a calibrated probability that an identity is correct. GIPHY’s technical description is in NVIDIA’s March 2019 account.

What the 98% claim actually measures
GIPHY’s repository uses broad “98% accuracy” wording, while its detailed announcement specifies 98% precision on a crowdsourced, labeled and verified dataset covering more than 1,000 popular GIPHY celebrities. Contemporary coverage separately reported 96.8% accuracy on the Labeled Faces in the Wild benchmark. These are results from particular evaluations, not a universal guarantee for GIFs found online.

| 96.8% accuracy | A separate result on the Labeled Faces in the Wild benchmark, as reported by contemporary coverage. |
Precision asks what share of the model’s positive identity predictions were correct. Accuracy asks what share of all evaluated decisions were correct. Neither number alone reveals recall, each celebrity’s error rate, false positives for unknown people, or results under difficult video conditions. The published figures do not establish 98% performance on arbitrary GIFs, including low-resolution, blurred, profile-view, occluded, stylized or heavily edited frames.
What the evaluations and public materials leave open
The training images, evaluation set and production library are distinct concepts: training data teach the model; validation or test data estimate performance; production content is what the model was intended to annotate. The public descriptions do not establish that the reported test data were fully independent of the data-selection process. Nor do the headline metrics show how the model handled unfamiliar identities or uneven numbers of examples per celebrity.

GIPHY said it intended to provide further details about testing for different kinds of bias, but the public announcement did not provide a complete demographic breakdown, subgroup error analysis or full bias audit. It therefore does not establish equal performance across race, ethnicity, gender, age, nationality or profession—or across lighting, makeup, hairstyles, camera angles and image quality. The materials also leave unanswered how consistently the label set handled stage names, aliases and lookalikes. A high aggregate score can conceal weak results for less-represented identities.
Can developers still run the open-source code?
The repository provides setup instructions and example workflows, but they reflect an older machine-learning stack. Its stated prerequisites include Python 3.6 or higher, a compatible TensorFlow environment, and MTCNN weight files named det1.npy, det2.npy and det3.npy. On Linux, the README lists libsm, libxext and libxrender; GPU use follows a documented NVIDIA Docker route. These instructions are not proof of compatibility with current Python, TensorFlow, CUDA, NVIDIA Container Toolkit or operating-system releases.
The README’s basic example workflow is:
pip install --upgrade virtualenv
virtualenv -p python3 venv
source ./venv/bin/activate
pip install -e .
cp .env.example .env
python experiments/example_experiment.py
It also documents a Docker Compose route:
docker-compose up --build
For the GPU container example, the repository gives this command:

Before investing in deployment, check whether the required weight archive is still accessible and pin dependencies in an isolated environment. Expect compatibility work, and test with representative material rather than treating a historical benchmark as a current acceptance test. A public face-recognition service also requires privacy, security and legal review, as well as controls against misuse.
Where the model can fail
GIFs make face recognition harder than a clean portrait: quality and identity can vary from frame to frame, and the model’s aggregation and clustering stages can introduce their own errors.
- Image conditions: Tiny faces, motion blur, profile views, occlusion from hands or accessories, recompression, heavy makeup, prosthetics, aging and rapid scene cuts can obscure useful features.
- Ambiguous content: A face may appear briefly; similar-looking people may be confused. Posters, reflections or photographs within a scene can also be detected as faces.
- Coverage: An identity outside the label set may be assigned to the closest known class, while popular identities may benefit from having more examples.
- Pipeline behavior: Processing many frames costs compute. Clustering can combine different people or split one person’s appearances, and a confidence score should not be mistaken for a calibrated probability.
These are reasons to use an “unknown” or unverified state and human review when an identification will be published or could affect someone’s reputation.

Current options: recognition is not the same as GIF search
The old GIPHY project, hosted recognition services and GIF search platforms solve different parts of a workflow. No current GIPHY-hosted Celebrity Detector endpoint is identified in the available first-party API documentation. GIPHY’s developer products cover content search and delivery, not arbitrary face identification.
| Option | What it does | Useful fit and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| GIPHY open-source repository | Self-hosted face detection and celebrity classification for a finite label set. | Useful for historical research or controlled experiments if you can maintain the stack; you take on infrastructure, error monitoring, data governance and deployment. |
| Amazon Rekognition | Hosted celebrity recognition for images and stored video. Image results include names, IDs, URLs, confidence values and face locations; video recognition is asynchronous and includes timestamps. | Worth evaluating for AWS-based production pipelines. AWS frames the feature for cases where a known celebrity is expected; cloud use, charges, integration and coverage still need review. See image recognition, video results and AWS’s scope description. |
| Google Cloud Vision | Image analysis that includes celebrity recognition. | Relevant for image workflows on Google Cloud. Its pricing page lists the first 1,000 units per month as free, then $1.50 per 1,000 units in the next tier and $0.60 per 1,000 at higher volume; check the current page for applicable terms. Google Vision pricing. |
| Google Video Intelligence | Its former celebrity-recognition video feature is deprecated. | Do not select it expecting current celebrity-video recognition: Google says the feature would no longer be available after September 16, 2025. Google’s Video Intelligence pricing page. |
| GIPHY API and SDK | GIF and sticker search, trending content, uploads and application integration. | Use it to retrieve or serve GIFs, not to identify faces. Beta API keys are limited to 100 searches/API calls per hour; production access requires an application, with pricing discussed with qualifying applicants. GIPHY API documentation. |
Hosted services reduce the burden of maintaining a model, but add vendor dependence, data-transfer considerations and usage costs. A self-hosted model avoids per-image API billing, not the costs of compute, storage, engineering and ongoing maintenance. Compare current service terms and regional requirements before choosing.
A practical workflow for finding celebrity GIFs
For a new application, separate the recognition step from the content-retrieval step. Obtain media from an authorized source, analyze it with a maintained system suitable for the input, then use a media provider’s search API for retrieval.
- Get the GIF or video from a source you are authorized to process.
- Extract representative frames or submit video through a supported recognition workflow.
- Keep the predicted identity, confidence, timestamp and face-location metadata together.
- Use a conservative threshold and preserve an unknown or unverified result; route borderline cases to a person.
- Store the identity label and its provenance separately from the original media.
- Use GIPHY Search or another appropriately licensed provider to retrieve related GIFs; apply content ratings and safe-search controls.
- Record the model or provider, version, threshold and inference date so results can be audited and re-tested.
Identification and publication are separate decisions. False positives can make a GIF appear to depict someone who is not in it, so public-facing uses need a correction path and review appropriate to the potential harm.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVerdict
GIPHY’s Celebrity Detector was a notable 2019 effort to make a large GIF catalog searchable by person. Its “over 2,300” figure describes a finite label set, and its most precise 98% result was precision on a particular crowdsourced evaluation set. Developers can still inspect the open-source code, but should treat it as a historical project requiring compatibility checks—not as evidence of a current, universally accurate recognition service.
