On October 9, 2013, the BBC announced that 11 film recordings from 1960s Doctor Who had been recovered at a television relay station in Jos, Nigeria. Nine of those recordings filled gaps in the BBC archive; two were duplicate copies of episodes already known to survive.
The material covered Patrick Troughton stories The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear. BBC Worldwide restored the recordings and launched the story packages first through iTunes at 00:01 on October 11, 2013, before planned DVD releases later that year.
What was actually recovered?
The familiar headline “11 lost episodes” is shorthand, not the precise archival count. The discovery returned 11 film recordings, but only nine represented episodes previously missing from the BBC’s known holdings. The remaining two were duplicate copies of episodes the BBC already possessed.
| Story | Original archive situation | What the recovery added |
|---|---|---|
| The Enemy of the World | Five of six episodes were missing; one was already held. | Five missing recordings were recovered, along with a duplicate of the surviving episode, making the six-part story complete in the archive. |
| The Web of Fear | Episode 1 was already known to survive; four other episodes were recovered as film recordings. Episode 3 required reconstruction rather than a complete recovered film copy. | Four missing recordings and a duplicate of Episode 1 were returned, while the story was presented with reconstructed material where necessary. |
The BBC’s announcement described the find as 11 recordings from two adventures, rather than 11 entirely unknown stories. The BBC’s contemporary account is the primary source for the episode count and release details.

The two Patrick Troughton stories
The Enemy of the World
Broadcast in December 1967, this six-part adventure stars Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor, with Frazer Hines as Jamie and Deborah Watling as Victoria. Episodes 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 had been missing. Recovering those five recordings restored the story as a complete six-episode serial, rather than merely adding a few isolated scenes.
The Web of Fear
Broadcast across February and March 1968, The Web of Fear also features Troughton, Hines and Watling. Episode 1 had survived before the Nigerian discovery. Four additional episodes were recovered as recordings, while Episode 3’s presentation depended on reconstruction from surviving audio and still images rather than an intact film episode. That distinction matters: “the story was recovered” does not mean every installment returned as a complete original print.
How the Nigerian discovery happened
The recordings were found at a television relay station in Jos, Nigeria. Archival investigator Phillip Morris of Television International Enterprises Archive traced BBC overseas-shipment records while searching for material exported for foreign transmission. Copies sent abroad sometimes remained in broadcasters’ storage after the BBC had discarded its domestic prints.

The location should be understood as part of the programme’s distribution history, not as the cause of its disappearance. In the 1960s and 1970s, broadcasters routinely destroyed or disposed of television film recordings when storage space was scarce and repeat value seemed limited. Overseas prints could therefore outlive the originals in the BBC’s own facilities.

Why the find mattered
- The Enemy of the World became complete in the archive for the first time since its missing episodes had been identified.
- The Web of Fear, a major Second Doctor story, was substantially restored for viewers.
- The material had been unavailable to most viewers for roughly 46 years, according to contemporary BBC coverage.
- The announcement arrived weeks before Doctor Who’s 50th-anniversary celebrations in November 2013, giving the discovery unusual cultural and commercial importance.
- It demonstrated why overseas archive searches remain essential to lost-television recovery.
Independent reporting from The Guardian placed the discovery in that wider history of exported television material and archive disposal.

What “exclusively on iTunes” meant
BBC Worldwide announced an initial digital-release window exclusive to iTunes. The launch was scheduled for 00:01 on October 11, 2013. Contemporary U.S. coverage reported each story package at $9.99, a historical price rather than a current listing.
“Exclusive” did not mean Apple permanently owned the stories or that they would never appear elsewhere. DVDs were announced or planned for later in 2013. The phrase described where fans could first obtain the restored digital packages, not an indefinite format restriction.

BBC Worldwide digitally remastered the recovered film recordings. Remastering can improve image stability, contrast, dirt and sound, but it cannot remove the limitations of 1960s source film or create detail that was never captured.
The released stories also combine different kinds of material:
- Recovered film episodes: original moving-image recordings restored from the returned prints.
- Existing archive episodes: installments the BBC already held before the discovery.
- Reconstructed material: sections assembled from surviving audio, still images or telesnaps when a complete film recording was unavailable.
Contemporary restoration coverage, including The Next Web’s report, specifically described reconstruction work associated with missing material in The Web of Fear. A restored presentation is therefore not proof that every episode survives as an untouched, complete print.

What happened after the iTunes launch?
The digital-first release was followed by physical editions, so the stories did not remain permanently confined to Apple’s store. The 2013 sources establish the launch timing, historical U.S. price and DVD plans; they do not establish present-day storefront availability or pricing, which can vary by country and by changes to Apple’s catalog.
The enduring archival fact is clearer than any current retailer listing: 11 recordings came back from Nigeria, nine previously missing episodes were restored, and two Second Doctor adventures returned to legal circulation just before the programme’s 50th anniversary.
Why “11 lost episodes” remains a misleading shortcut
Calling the event the recovery of 11 lost episodes obscures three important facts: the number refers to recordings, two were duplicates, and The Web of Fear still involved reconstruction. The most accurate summary is that the BBC recovered 11 recordings, restored nine previously missing episodes and initially released the two affected stories exclusively on iTunes.
