In an interview published by the Daily Mail on December 12, 2025, he linked the preference to a conversation with his wife, Amal, about aging—not to a categorical announcement that he will never take a romantic role again.
What did George Clooney say about kissing scenes?
As quoted by E! News, Clooney said: “I’ve been trying to go the route Paul Newman did: ‘OK, well, I’m not kissing a girl any more.’” E! attributes the remark to a Daily Mail interview published December 12, 2025. The Independent also reported the central statement and its context.
The wording here is the quotation as E! rendered it; punctuation and apostrophes vary across outlets. The original interview could not be directly checked, so the quotation and context should be understood as secondary-source reporting.
Why did Clooney say he was making the change?
E! reported that Clooney connected the decision to a conversation with Amal after he turned 60. He said he had reflected on aging and the passage of time, including the prospect that he would be 85 in 25 years. The remark presents the onscreen-kissing preference as part of that personal reflection; it does not quote Amal giving a view or making a request.

Does this mean Clooney is done with all romantic roles?
Not necessarily. The statement expresses a preference about onscreen kissing, but it does not establish that every future role or romantic scene is ruled out. The distinction matters: avoiding a kiss is narrower than retiring from romantic stories altogether.
There is earlier secondary reporting that points to a broader shift. India Today, reporting on a 60 Minutes appearance, quoted Clooney as saying, “I’m 63 years old. I’m not trying to compete with 25-year-old leading men. That’s not my job. I’m not doing romantic films anymore.” That reported comment helps explain the context, but neither statement proves an absolute rule for every role he might accept.

What does the Paul Newman comparison establish?
Clooney invoked Newman as an example of an actor who stopped kissing women onscreen. The available reporting establishes that Clooney made the comparison; it does not independently establish the full history or precise terms of Newman’s reported choice. The comparison should therefore be read as Clooney’s own reference, not as a complete account of Newman’s career or decisions.
