George Clooney dyed his familiar silver, salt-and-pepper hair dark for his Broadway role as journalist Edward R. Murrow in Good Night and Good Luck. It was a character-related change—not a makeover to look younger or a hair-product endorsement—and Clooney said the result was not his favorite.
Why did George Clooney dye his hair?
The change was for the Broadway production of Good Night and Good Luck, in which Clooney portrayed pioneering broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow. The dark brown hair helped him fit the role; the available reports do not identify a specific dye brand or establish an unrelated personal motive.
Clooney was seen with dark hair in March 2025. The Independent connected the look to the production in its April 20, 2025 coverage, and CBS News reported the explanation the next day after a CBS Mornings interview. CBS News | The Independent
What did Clooney think of the dark hair?
He was candid that the change felt unfamiliar. In the interview reported by CBS News, Clooney said, “You never get used to it,” and called it “not my favorite look.” CBS News said his wife found the change funny and that his children laughed at it.

The Independent’s account of his comments differs on his wife’s reaction: it reports that Clooney called the look “horrible” and said, “My wife hates it. She says, ‘it’s not a good look on you.’” Those are separate accounts of his remarks, rather than a single confirmed description of her response.
Was the hair change permanent?
The reports establish why Clooney changed his hair for the 2025 Broadway role, but they do not establish his hair color at a later date. The dark look should therefore be understood as a role-specific appearance change, not proof of a permanent makeover.
