At a service counter, someone asks a question and gets a blank look instead of a greeting or answer. Online, that expression is often called the “Gen Z stare.” It can feel dismissive, but a facial expression alone cannot tell you whether someone is being rude, confused, tired, or simply taking a moment to respond.
What is the “Gen Z stare”?
The phrase describes a blank or expressionless look popularly associated with Gen Z, especially when a response or small talk is expected. It is commonly discussed in connection with customer-service exchanges. ABC News notes that Know Your Meme traces the earliest known TikTok mention to July 29, 2024, while wider discussion took off across platforms in mid-2025. That is a reported earliest trace, not proof of who coined the phrase or when the behavior began. ABC News
The phrase names a debated social-media label, not a diagnosis or an established trait shared by a generation. There is no identified statistic showing how often the expression occurs, or formal study establishing what causes it.
Is the Gen Z stare rude or confrontational?
It can come across as rude or confrontational, but it is not inherently either. The important distinction is between what you observe—a pause or blank expression—and what you infer about intent. Someone may feel dismissed by the interaction; that feeling is real, but it does not prove the other person meant to insult or challenge them.

Psychology lecturer Shane Rogers of Edith Cowan University says staring can signal boredom, apathy, or disdain, but it can also be a pause to consider a response. In ABC News interviews, one young person described looking blank when overwhelmed, annoyed, or under pressure, and said a lack of small-talk response among peers did not necessarily seem offensive. Context helps distinguish a difficult exchange from an uncertain one: consider what was asked, whether it was heard and understood, how busy or stressful the situation is, and whether both people expect the same degree of conversational warmth. No single expression can settle those questions.

Why might someone stare instead of answering?
They may be processing or confused
A pause can mean a person is thinking through a question. Unfamiliar terminology, unclear instructions, or a service system that is not obvious to everyone may also leave someone unsure what to say next. What seems like a simple prompt to one person may not be clear to another. ABC News
They may not share the same small-talk expectations
Some interviewees describe being more accustomed to conversations that start with a specific shared interest than with an in-person opener. Other accounts describe a mismatch between expectations of “performative politeness” and a preference not to add reassurance or extra chatter. Work conditions may shape the interaction
Some commentary links blank expressions in retail and hospitality to fatigue from demanding work, including jobs described as low-paid. That possibility should not be generalized: it does not establish that young workers as a group are tired, disengaged, or unwilling to help. PerthNow
Generational expectations may color what observers see
People may interpret the same pause differently depending on what they expect a polite response to look like. Rogers has noted that generational comparisons recur, and social platforms can amplify them. The label may therefore reflect the observer’s expectations as much as the person’s expression. PerthNow

Did COVID lockdowns cause it?
That has not been established. Some commentators suggest that technology-mediated interaction or fewer opportunities for face-to-face contact may be part of the context, but those explanations remain hypotheses rather than proven causes. Rogers said “there was no definitive scientific evidence that lockdowns had caused any impairment of social skills.” He allowed that lockdown experiences might have contributed to current norms, but that is different from showing they caused a generational deficit. - Clarify the prompt. If you do not get a response, try asking the question another way or making the requested action more specific.
- Allow time. A pause may be a person working out what you mean, rather than a refusal to engage.
- Consider the situation. Noise, stress, workload, and unfamiliar language or systems can affect how an interaction unfolds.
- Respond to the behavior, not an age-based assumption. If the exchange remains difficult, explain what you need directly instead of treating a blank expression as proof of disrespect.
Behavioral science teaching professor Kristen Lee of Northeastern University advises, “The key is not making rash generalizations or judgements.” She also says, “The key thing is knowing the value and the protective nature of microinteractions.” A small, patient effort to clarify or build rapport can help without requiring either person to adopt the other’s conversational style.
