The Travis County Medical Examiner determined that actor Billy Miller died from a gunshot wound to the head and classified his death as suicide, according to a December 7, 2023 report by Fox News, which said it obtained the examiner’s documents. Miller died in Austin, Texas, on September 15, 2023, at age 43, according to the Los Angeles Times.
What was Billy Miller’s cause of death?
Fox News reported on December 7, 2023, that documents from the Travis County Medical Examiner listed the cause of death as “gunshot wound of head” and the manner of death as “suicide.” This finding is attributed to the examiner’s documents as described by Fox News; the underlying document was not independently reviewed for this account.
What was said publicly before the determination was reported?
In its September 17, 2023 report, the Los Angeles Times said Miller’s manager had confirmed his death and described him as having struggled with manic depression. At that point, the report said, no cause of death had been given.
Two days later, the Times quoted Miller’s mother, Patricia Miller, saying her son had battled bipolar depression for years and that other causes then being reported were untrue. She said: “He fought a long hard valiant battle with bipolar depression for years. He did everything he could to control the disease. He loved his family, his friends and his fans but in the end the disease won the fight and he surrendered his life.”

Her statement described his struggle and rejected other circulating claims; the cause and manner of death later reported by Fox News came from the medical examiner’s documents. These are distinct accounts and should not be conflated.
