‘Garbage’ is a 2018 Hindi-language thriller written and directed by Qaushiq Mukherjee, who works under the name Q. It reached Netflix on September 1, 2018, so it is a historical release, not a new 2026 arrival. Whether you can watch it today depends on your country: Netflix’s US and India title pages both show a notice that the title is not available in the viewer’s country.
What kind of film it is
‘Garbage’ is a fiction feature, not a documentary. It follows two people whose lives collide after a private video goes public. Netflix describes the premise as a story about a fundamentalist online troll and a woman reeling from a sex tape going viral, whose lives become dangerously intertwined. The film’s explicit content is central to its setup, but the coverage treats it as part of a story about shame, power and public judgment rather than as an erotic thriller in the ordinary sense.
Is it available on Netflix?
The film was made available on Netflix in 2018. Availability on the service is set country by country, and Netflix’s current title pages show that it is not offered in every market. To check where you are:
- Open the title page for your region. The US page is https://www.netflix.com/title/80994130, and the India page is https://www.netflix.com/in/title/80994130.
- If you see the message that the title is not available in your country, the film is not licensed for streaming where you are. Pages for other countries may differ.
- If the page offers playback, check the rating shown there before watching, since ratings vary by region (see below).
Do not assume that a page from one country tells you what is available in another.

Release timeline

| February 17, 2018 | Scheduled world premiere at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival, Panorama section | Scroll.in, February 16, 2018 report |
| September 1, 2018 | Netflix release date | Scroll.in, Soumya Rao review (September 10, 2018); Rotten Tomatoes lists the same streaming date |
These dates are from contemporaneous reporting and listings. They describe the film’s 2018 launch, not its present-day catalog status.
What happens in the story
Scroll.in’s coverage gives the key characters. Phanishwar, played by Tanmay Dhanania, is a taxi driver in Goa who holds Nanaam, played by Satarupa Das, captive. Rami, played by Trimala Adhikari, comes to Goa after a secretly filmed sex video of her circulates online. Phanishwar follows her online, and the two storylines converge.
Two themes run through the reporting. The first is the public shaming that follows a leaked intimate video, which Scroll.in describes as a lasting source of trauma for Rami. The second is the way the film depicts Phanishwar’s misogyny and his political and religious ideology, which the coverage describes as deliberately charged. The sexual content is therefore part of the film’s argument about how online culture punishes women and rewards aggression, not a separate attraction.
Cast, rating and runtime
| Item | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Lead cast | Tanmay Dhanania, Trimala Adhikari, Satarupa Das | Netflix title listing |
| Supporting cast | Satchit Puranik, Gitanjali Dang, Shruti Viswan, Nikhil Chopra, Krish Moitra | Netflix title listing |
| Rating, US listing | TV-MA | Netflix US title page |
| Rating, India listing | A | Netflix India title page |
| Runtime | 109 minutes | Rotten Tomatoes film listing (secondary metadata; the Netflix pages reviewed do not state a runtime) |
The Netflix listings also tag the film as a thriller, drama and social-issue story, and as an independent Indian Hindi-language title. Because the rating is TV-MA in the US and A in India, check the local rating before viewing if you are choosing for someone else.

In a February 2018 interview with Scroll.in, Q said of the film: “It is a fairly dangerous film,” and added, “My earlier films at least could be called funny, but Garbage is not a funny film.” The same interview records his view of how he wants audiences to watch: “I have always been more interested in one person experiencing my film at a time rather than a collective engaging with my cinema.” That is his description of his own preference, not a statement about how the film was distributed.
For readers who want a full picture of the film, the explicit material, the online-harassment storyline and the director’s stated intent are best read together rather than in isolation.
