Growing Up Karanth is a family memoir by three of Shivarama Karanth’s children: K. Ullas Karanth, Malavika Kapur and Kshama Rau. It offers an intimate view of the Kannada writer and cultural figure at home and among family friends, rather than a comprehensive critical study of his work.

Google Books’ listing includes chapter titles such as “The Amma of Balavana,” “A Little Girl Grows Up in Balavana,” “A Boys World,” “Tatas Charmed Circle,” “Engaging with the Real World,” and “The Inward Journey.” Together, they suggest a narrative that moves between home, childhood, social life and public engagement.
What does the memoir show about Karanth’s family life?
Leela and Balavana
Nikhil Govind’s 2022 review in Scroll places the family story in coastal southern Karnataka amid the cultural and political changes of the twentieth century. It describes Karanth’s marriage to Leela Alva and her role in establishing Balavana, a home conceived as an artistic and educational community. The children’s recollections include dance-drama and gatherings there, alongside the grief and strains that marked later family life. These are presented through the perspective of the memoir and its reviewer, not as a clinical account or a comprehensive biography.

A remembered circle of friends
In an excerpt published by The News Minute on October 10, 2021, co-author Ullas Karanth recalls his father’s friends and the conversations, readings and performances in their circle. It offers a first-person sample of the social world the book remembers; the anecdotes are Ullas’s recollections rather than an independently verified record.
Is it a biography or a critical study?
It is best approached as a memoir-driven portrait, not as a full critical evaluation of Shivarama Karanth’s literary output. Govind’s review makes that distinction explicitly: “As it is a book written by children (who are now in their seventies), it is expectedly richer from the perspective of an intimate, affectionate portrait, rather than that of a comprehensive survey of a life and milieu.” That is the reviewer’s assessment of the book’s strengths and scope.
Readers seeking a close reading of individual novels, a complete public chronology or a reconciled catalogue of Karanth’s works should treat this book as a complement to such material, not a substitute. Its particular value is the domestic and cultural texture supplied by family memory.

Shivarama Karanth was a Kannada novelist and playwright, a practitioner of Yakshagana, a filmmaker and publisher, and an ecological conservationist. Scroll’s review reports that he received the Jnanpith award in 1977. An IGNCA tribute also highlights his novels, Yakshagana work and conservation service, and says: “His great novels, his work for the Yakshagana and his pioneering service to the conservation movement will be his monument.” The tribute’s original author is not identified in the material available on the page.

Scroll’s 2022 review reports detailed counts from the book’s blurb and introduction: forty-five novels, thirty-one plays, over two hundred books for children, nine autobiographical writings, thirteen books on fine arts, a Kannada dictionary and nearly twenty popular-science books. IGNCA uses the broader phrase “three dozen novels.” These figures come from different descriptions and should not be treated as a reconciled bibliography.
Who is the book best suited to?
- Readers interested in Karanth as a father and family presence, as well as a cultural figure.
- Readers curious about Balavana, the children’s memories of life there and the family’s social circle.
- Readers who want personal recollection alongside broader accounts of Kannada literature, Yakshagana and conservation.
Those looking primarily for sustained criticism of Karanth’s individual works or a definitive survey of his whole life may need a more comprehensive literary or biographical study in addition to this memoir.
