Futureverse announced that it had acquired Candy Digital on April 16, 2025, saying the combination would support more immersive, personalized and interoperable fan experiences. The “AI-powered” ambition was not a launched Candy product: the announcement named no AI feature or release date. Candy’s plans also shifted after the deal, from an announced Root Network path to a 2026 migration to Solana. A separate 2026 announcement claimed Tad Smith and his family acquired Candy, leaving the company’s current ownership unclear from the public materials available.
What Futureverse announced
Candy Digital said on April 16, 2025, that it had become part of Futureverse. Futureverse’s news archive lists the announcement on April 17. The companies described a strategic combination: Candy brought licensed digital collectibles, brand relationships and a consumer-facing collector community; Futureverse brought technology and an ecosystem spanning identity, blockchain, games, metaverse experiences and AI-oriented tools. The companies did not publish a purchase price or a detailed transaction document specifying which contracts, assets, employees or intellectual property changed hands. Axios reported that the deal was primarily equity-based, with some former employees offered a cash-conversion option for their options; the purchase price was not disclosed. That reporting does not establish the exact legal scope of the transaction. Axios’s acquisition report provides the available deal context.

Why Candy fit Futureverse’s strategy
Candy had built products around licensed sports and entertainment properties, including MLB and DC Comics; Axios also reported partnerships involving Netflix, Getty Images and others. That gave Futureverse a route to established brands and fans, rather than requiring it to build every consumer relationship from scratch.

Candy’s products had also tested ways to make collecting participatory: digital collectibles could sit alongside challenges, rewards and physical-prize campaigns. The strategic opportunity was to move beyond isolated drops toward repeat interactions among fans, teams, players, characters and brands.
Axios cited roughly 1.5 million Candy accounts and more than four million digital assets in company-related promotional material. Those figures are attributed, not independently audited active-user counts. An account total does not show how many people still collect, trade or use the platform.
What “AI-powered fan experiences” meant
Futureverse positioned the deal around more immersive and personalized fandom, and its wider company materials promote AI-enabled tools and brand experiences. But the acquisition announcement did not identify a Candy AI assistant, name a model or describe a specific AI workflow fans could use. It provided no launch date, pricing, technical architecture or explanation of how licensed content would be handled.

Candy’s later Solana announcement referred to possibilities such as smarter rewards, dynamic collectibles, additional utility and AI agent-driven experiences. It framed these as future possibilities, not features already available to collectors. Candy’s migration announcement is the clearest direct link between its products and that AI language.
For now, “AI-powered” is best understood as strategic positioning, not evidence that Candy customers received a finished AI product. Personalization or AI-generated content in a licensed fandom would also raise practical questions about privacy, moderation and rights to use characters, logos, player likenesses and archival material. The public announcements reviewed do not settle those questions.
From Root Network to Solana
In 2025, Candy described a plan for self-custody through Futureverse’s Root Network and presented it as a foundation for connected games, content and experiences. That was an intended direction, not a guarantee that every Candy collectible would work in future games or applications.

In April 2026, Candy announced that collectibles would move to Solana using Metaplex Core. Its FAQ says the migration began in May 2026. This is a material change in the publicly described technical route: the original announcement pointed to Root Network; the later operating plan points to Solana. Candy’s materials do not explain whether Root Network remains relevant to selected Futureverse experiences or whether the Candy integration was redirected entirely. What the migration means for collectors
According to Candy’s FAQ, qualifying active fans were promised automatic migration, with Candy covering technical service and network fees and providing a self-custody Solana wallet at no charge. The FAQ defines active status as either having made a transaction since January 1, 2024, or having logged in and viewed a collection between January 1, 2024, and May 20, 2026. Fans who did not qualify could request migration during 2026 and might be charged technical-service fees.
Candy says rarity, edition, serial number and metadata carry over unchanged, and that unopened packs remain unopened. It also says assets not migrated will remain accessible through the legacy system at least until December 31, 2026. These are Candy’s stated migration terms; collectors should check their own accounts and the current FAQ for any asset-specific exception or updated deadline.

The FAQ says new purchases mint directly to a Candy-created Solana wallet and that secondary trading is supported through third-party Solana marketplaces, including Magic Eden. Marketplace availability does not guarantee buyers, resale value or liquidity. Candy also says inactive accounts become subject to a $2 monthly custodial maintenance fee beginning July 1, 2026. Check the FAQ for the current terms that apply to your account.
Self-custody changes who controls access to the wallet, but it also makes recovery and security important. Control of a token does not, by itself, transfer copyright, trademark, commercial-use rights or ownership of the underlying MLB, DC or other licensed material. The specific collectible license and Candy’s current terms govern those rights.

Collector checklist
- Go directly to Candy’s official site and confirm you can access the account associated with your collectibles.
- Review the migration status and eligibility information in the official FAQ. Confirm any identity-verification or two-factor-authentication requirements.
- Check that your collectibles and unopened packs appear as expected. Keep purchase records and transaction history.
- Read wallet setup and recovery instructions carefully. Never share a recovery phrase or approve a transaction because of an unsolicited message.
- Do not burn a collectible unless you understand the result; burning is irreversible. Platform credits are not cash and cannot be redeemed for fiat currency.
- Before trading, check the asset’s terms, the marketplace’s fees and the transaction details. A supported marketplace does not promise a sale or a particular price.
Use official announcements for migration updates and treat unexpected wallet links or support requests as potential phishing. A “no action required” promise for an eligible automatic migration does not remove the need to secure the account and understand the wallet’s recovery process.

A separate 2026 ownership claim
On May 18, 2026, a press release said Tad Smith and his family had acquired Candy Digital. That claim complicates the earlier account of Candy becoming part of Futureverse. The available public materials do not establish whether this was a later sale, a restructuring, a transfer of selected operations or another arrangement, and Candy materials continue to describe aspects of the Futureverse integration. Without a transaction document or clarification from both companies, it would be premature to state who owns Candy today or who controls every customer account, brand contract and technology component. The ownership claim is reported in this May 2026 press release; it requires independent confirmation.
What to watch next
For collectors, the immediate issues are migration completion, wallet access, fees and the availability of their assets on supported marketplaces. For brands, the test is whether the platform can produce sustained fan engagement—not just collectible sales—with clear rights, safety and moderation practices. For Futureverse, the strategic case depends on delivering usable cross-experience features and explaining how Candy’s Solana implementation relates to its earlier Root Network plan.
Interoperability is not automatic just because an asset is on a blockchain. Each game or service must support the asset, its metadata and its licensing conditions. Likewise, AI personalization is useful only if the product exists and its data and content practices are clear. The acquisition announcement set out an ambition; the later migration is a concrete change in infrastructure, but neither one alone proves that a fully operational AI-powered fan platform has arrived.
