Furiosa First Reactions: Brutal, Masterful, and Absolutely Epic

The first reactions to Furiosa were broadly accurate: George Miller delivered a brutal, masterful, and epic Mad Max film. But it is not another Fury Road—it is a sprawling origin story with bigger mythology, standout performances, and a slower, more chapter-like structure.

The early reactions to Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga were broadly right—but with one important qualification. George Miller’s 2024 film is brutal, technically masterful, and genuinely epic. It is also not another Mad Max: Fury Road. Rather than recreate that film’s near-continuous chase, Furiosa expands the mythology into a decades-spanning origin story about how a stolen child becomes one of the Wasteland’s most formidable survivors.

That distinction explains both the enthusiasm and the reservations in the first reviews. Viewers who wanted spectacular vehicles, practical-feeling action, strange mythology, and ambitious world-building found much to celebrate. Those expecting Fury Road’s uninterrupted momentum sometimes found the longer timeline and chapter-like structure heavy going.

What the first reactions actually praised

The first-reaction headline came from a Rotten Tomatoes roundup published on May 7, 2024. The collected responses repeatedly described the film as “masterful,” “epic,” “beautiful,” and among the most brutal entries in the franchise. But the same reactions also made clear that Furiosa should be judged as its own kind of Mad Max film, not simply as a test of whether it beats Fury Road.

That is the fairest way to understand the early consensus: Furiosa is a highly acclaimed, unusually ambitious action prequel with a different engine from its predecessor. Its strengths are scale, invention, performance, and history. Its possible weakness is that those same qualities make it less concentrated and less immediately propulsive.

“Brutal”: Miller’s Wasteland remains a physical place

The most consistent praise concerned the action. George Miller again treats vehicles, terrain, machinery, and bodies as parts of the same visual language. The result is not merely a sequence of digital effects but a world that appears engineered around engines, fuel, weapons, scarcity, and movement.

ABC News called the film a “brutal and brilliant cinematic fireball” and highlighted its large-format spectacle, chases, crashes, war rigs, monster trucks, and motorcycle warfare. The adjective “brutal” fits the film’s violence, but it also describes its survivalist outlook. Characters are not protected by the polished logic of a conventional superhero film: machines fail, plans collapse, and victory is usually purchased at a physical and emotional cost.

The production design continues the visual tradition established by Fury Road while giving the Wasteland more room to breathe. In Associated Press production coverage, the vehicles are identified as the true stars of the franchise, with the War Rig again serving as a centerpiece of motorized mayhem. That observation is important. The action works because the vehicles are not interchangeable props; they express the social order of the Wasteland. A convoy, a motorcycle horde, or a towering war machine tells the viewer who controls resources and how power travels.

Furiosa is therefore brutal in a specifically Miller-like way: its violence is heightened and mythic, but it remains grounded in weight, momentum, impact, and elaborate mechanical cause and effect. The film’s biggest set pieces are designed to be watched as moving systems, with each vehicle and combatant contributing to a larger piece of choreography.

“Masterful”: Anya Taylor-Joy inherits the role without imitating Charlize Theron

Anya Taylor-Joy was the other major point of agreement in the early reactions. She plays the adult Furiosa, while Alyla Browne portrays the character during her childhood. The casting is a structural risk: the audience already knows Furiosa as the controlled, scarred, intensely private warrior played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road.

The film avoids asking Taylor-Joy to copy Theron’s performance. Instead, she plays the process by which Furiosa becomes that person. Her version is defined by discipline, observation, and endurance. She is constantly measuring danger, deciding what to conceal, and waiting for the moment when survival requires action.

The Guardian described Taylor-Joy as a convincing action heroine and emphasized how effectively she sells Furiosa’s transformation from abducted child to hardened survivor. ABC News likewise noted that Taylor-Joy does not appear until approximately an hour into the film, yet becomes commanding as soon as she takes over the role. Her limited dialogue is part of the performance’s design: Furiosa communicates through attention, posture, concealment, and the practical decisions she makes under pressure.

This is why “masterful” applies to Taylor-Joy’s contribution as much as to Miller’s action direction. She gives the film an emotional center without turning Furiosa into a conventional speech-making protagonist. The character’s inner life is expressed through persistence. She survives long enough to become capable of shaping events rather than merely responding to them.

“Absolutely epic”: Chris Hemsworth makes Dementus a dangerous spectacle

Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus supplied the film with a contrasting source of energy. The biker warlord is flamboyant, theatrical, absurd, and horrifying. Where Furiosa is controlled and inward, Dementus performs his power outwardly. He turns leadership into spectacle and cruelty into a kind of public entertainment.

The early reactions repeatedly singled him out as a memorable villain. The Guardian called Hemsworth’s character hilariously evil and entertaining, while the Rotten Tomatoes roundup also highlighted him as a standout antagonist. The performance could easily have become a distraction, but Hemsworth’s excess is useful because it gives the film a human-scale counterweight to the Citadel’s institutional brutality.

Dementus is not frightening because he is restrained. He is frightening because his theatricality makes violence feel contagious. He can turn a crowd, a symbol, or a piece of machinery into an extension of his personality. Hemsworth understands that the character’s comedy should not make the Wasteland safer; it should make the danger more unpredictable.

The contrast between the two leads gives the film much of its dramatic shape. Furiosa represents patience, memory, and controlled purpose. Dementus represents appetite, performance, and chaos. Their opposition is more than a hero-versus-villain arrangement: it is a conflict between two ways of surviving a ruined world.

A different kind of Mad Max film

The most important point in the early reviews was structural. Fury Road compressed its story into a desperate journey across the Wasteland and back again. Furiosa covers roughly fifteen years—sometimes described in early coverage as approaching two decades—and follows its protagonist through several stages of captivity, adaptation, and resistance.

GameSpot described the extended timeline as a “brilliant change of pace” and argued that the film’s sequences follow their own paths rather than serving as a hollow repeat of Fury Road. That choice gives the prequel a reason to exist. It is not simply showing another convoy escaping another tyrant. It is explaining how the Wasteland’s systems shape Furiosa and how she learns to move within them.

Metacritic’s review aggregation captured a similar response: critics described the film as a rich, sprawling epic with a different engine from Fury Road, and as an effective stand-alone account of how the Wasteland formed Furiosa.

The story begins with young Furiosa being taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers by a biker horde led by Dementus. She eventually becomes entangled with the Citadel and Immortan Joe, spending years trying to survive and find a route back toward home. That is enough context for a spoiler-light understanding of the premise. The film’s interest lies less in a mystery about Furiosa’s eventual identity than in the stages of experience that make her survival skills, loyalties, and rage intelligible.

The reservation: epic can also mean overextended

The criticism was not generally that Furiosa was poorly made. The concern was comparative and structural: the film does not move with the same relentless force as Fury Road.

The Associated Press review argued that the film spends too long with young Furiosa and found its quest structure frustrating in part because viewers already know what happens to the Green Place from Fury Road. Variety praised the dazzling action while contending that the expansive mythology-building does not fully match the concentrated force of the earlier film.

This is a meaningful distinction for prospective viewers. If the ideal Mad Max experience is a sustained, almost breathless chase with minimal exposition, Furiosa may feel overstuffed. It has more time jumps, more historical context, and more narrative stops and starts. Its chapter-like progression can make the film feel like a legend being assembled rather than a single emergency unfolding in real time.

For viewers who enjoy world-building, that breadth is the point. The film makes the Wasteland feel less like a backdrop and more like a civilization with competing economies, rituals, factions, and memories. For viewers who valued Fury Road’s compression, the same ambition may reduce the emotional immediacy.

So, are the first reactions justified?

Yes—provided “epic” is not mistaken for “identical to Fury Road” or “universally better than Fury Road.”

“Brutal” describes the film’s violence, physical stakes, and harsh survival logic. “Masterful” describes Miller’s command of action design, production detail, visual composition, and the performances anchoring the story. “Absolutely epic” describes the film’s scale, timeline, mythology, and willingness to treat Furiosa’s life as a Wasteland saga rather than a single chase.

The reactions do not support a definitive ranking in which Furiosa surpasses Fury Road. They support a more useful conclusion: Miller made another ambitious and expertly controlled action epic, but he changed the form. Fury Road is concentrated propulsion. Furiosa is accumulation—of history, trauma, machinery, rival powers, and hard-won skill.

Who should watch it?

  • Watch it if you want: large-format action, elaborate vehicle combat, mythic storytelling, practical-feeling spectacle, and more history behind Furiosa’s world.
  • Moderate your expectations if you want: another uninterrupted chase with the compressed momentum of Fury Road.
  • Expect a different emphasis: the film spends substantial time on Furiosa’s development, the Wasteland’s political order, and the rivalry between Furiosa’s discipline and Dementus’s theatrical chaos.

In short, the first reactions were not empty hype. They accurately recognized an unusually bold and visually accomplished prequel. Their qualification matters just as much as their praise: Furiosa is not Fury Road, and its success depends on whether a viewer wants Miller to repeat that film’s form or build a larger legend around it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Furiosa as fast-paced as Mad Max: Fury Road?

Not in the same way. Fury Road is built around a highly concentrated chase, while Furiosa spans roughly fifteen years and uses a broader, chapter-like origin-story structure. It contains major action set pieces, but its overall momentum is less continuous.

Does Furiosa explain Furiosa’s backstory?

Yes. The film follows Furiosa from childhood after she is taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers, through her encounters with Dementus, the Citadel, and Immortan Joe, and into the experiences that shape her as a survivor. This article avoids major plot spoilers.

Who plays Furiosa and Dementus?

Anya Taylor-Joy plays the adult Furiosa, Alyla Browne plays Furiosa as a child, and Chris Hemsworth plays the biker warlord Dementus. George Miller directed the film.

Is Furiosa a sequel to Fury Road?

It is a prequel and origin story centered on Furiosa before the events of Fury Road. It is also the fifth film in the Mad Max franchise.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Furiosa earned its early descriptions of “brutal,” “masterful,” and “epic” through its action design, performances, production scale, and expanded mythology. It should not be sold as a replacement for Fury Road, though. It is a broader, more historical, and more openly mythic film—one likely to satisfy viewers who want the Wasteland enlarged, even if its ambition occasionally makes it feel less immediate.
