Much of its streaming catalog was moved to Crunchyroll, but Funimation Digital Copies—digital content bundled with certain DVDs and Blu-rays purchased through Funimation—did not make the transition. Crunchyroll’s current support documentation says those copies are unsupported and that access to the previously available digital copies is unavailable.
That distinction matters. Funimation did not simply erase every anime that had been available to stream. The shutdown ended the standalone service, disrupted or ended access to some account data, and left customers without the digital-copy benefit attached to some physical-media purchases.
What happened to Funimation?
Funimation was folded into a broader Crunchyroll consolidation rather than disappearing because of a sudden technical failure. On August 9, 2021, Crunchyroll announced that it had joined Funimation Global Group. On March 1, 2022, Crunchyroll announced that Funimation, Wakanim, and VRV services would be unified under the Crunchyroll brand, with Funimation content beginning to move to Crunchyroll.
The final step came on April 2, 2024, when the Funimation website and app closed. Crunchyroll became the principal destination for new and migrated anime content. Its transition announcement said new series would stream only on Crunchyroll going forward, although Funimation continued adding episodes to some ongoing series during the transition.

Crunchyroll’s current Funimation end-of-services guidance confirms that the old service is no longer available and explains the limits of the transition.
The important distinction: streaming access versus digital copies
The phrase “digital library” can make the shutdown sound broader than the evidence supports. There were at least three different kinds of access involved:
| What a Funimation customer had | What happened |
|---|---|
| Access to anime through a Funimation subscription | The Funimation service ended. Much of the streaming catalog moved to Crunchyroll, but availability remains title-, region-, language-, and licensing-dependent. |
| Watch history, queue, or other account information | Crunchyroll says Watch History migration is no longer available. It does not promise that every old queue, viewing record, or piece of account metadata survived. |
| A Funimation Digital Copy bundled with certain DVDs or Blu-rays | Crunchyroll says Digital Copies are not supported and that access to the previously available copies is unavailable. |
So the most accurate summary is not “Crunchyroll deleted everything Funimation users had ever watched.” It is this: Funimation’s separate streaming service became a Crunchyroll migration, but some customers lost access to digital copies associated with physical-media purchases.
What were Funimation Digital Copies?
Funimation Digital Copies were not necessarily standalone purchases from a modern digital storefront. They were digital versions or associated digital content made available with certain DVDs and Blu-rays bought through Funimation’s former platform.
That difference changes the ownership question. A customer could still possess the physical disc while losing the separate digital entitlement that came with it. The disc and the digital copy were related benefits, but they were not the same thing.
Crunchyroll’s current support page is unusually clear on the key point: Funimation Digital Copies are not supported, and access to the previously available copies is not available. There is no documented general migration that turns those old entitlements into Crunchyroll access.

If you bought a disc with a Funimation Digital Copy, do not assume that entering the old code into Crunchyroll will restore it. Do not assume that creating or linking a Crunchyroll account will recreate the old collection either. The official guidance does not promise either outcome.
Did the entire Funimation streaming catalog move to Crunchyroll?
No such blanket conclusion is supported by the official transition material. In 2022, Crunchyroll published lists of shows and movies moving from Funimation and said that large numbers of titles were arriving on the service. Its current support guidance says that most content had migrated, while directing users to continue checking for additional catalog updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“Most” is not “all.” A particular series may be absent, or its availability may differ in:
- country or regional market;
- season or individual episode;
- subtitles and dubbed-language tracks;
- video format and extras;
- license period; and
- subscription tier or platform.
Even when a show is available on Crunchyroll, it may not be identical to the Funimation version a viewer remembers. A dub, subtitle track, bonus feature, uncut version, or particular season may be handled separately. Check the specific title in the relevant country instead of treating the corporate migration as a guarantee.
Crunchyroll’s original announcement about Funimation content moving to Crunchyroll is useful for understanding the transition, but it should not be read as a permanent promise that every title will remain available indefinitely.
What did users lose?
1. The Funimation app and website
The old Funimation interface is gone. Former subscribers cannot continue using Funimation as a separate archive, browse its old catalog, or rely on its account pages as a backup copy of their viewing history.

2. Digital-copy access
This is the clearest documented loss. Crunchyroll does not currently support Funimation Digital Copies and says the previously available copies will not be available. A physical purchase therefore did not guarantee permanent access to its bundled digital version.
3. Watch history and possibly other account organization
Crunchyroll says Watch History migration is no longer available. If your old queue or viewing record matters, do not expect it to reappear simply because you use the same email address on Crunchyroll. Account continuity and data continuity are separate issues.
4. Some catalog-specific convenience
Even where a title migrated, the transition could require a new search, a different subscription arrangement, or a fresh check of language tracks and seasons. Catalog access is service access—not a guarantee that every item, feature, or arrangement from the former platform remains unchanged.
What did users not necessarily lose?
Owning a physical DVD or Blu-ray is different from having a streaming subscription or a platform-hosted digital copy. If you still have the original disc, you still have the release itself, subject to ordinary practical limitations:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- the disc must still be readable;
- your player must support the disc format;
- the release may be region-coded;
- the physical edition may contain a different cut, dub, or subtitle selection than another edition; and
- replacement discs may be difficult or expensive if the release is out of print.
The disc is not a guaranteed replacement for the Funimation Digital Copy. It is simply the more durable part of the original transaction: the physical media remains in your possession instead of depending entirely on a platform that has closed.
What affected customers should do now
- Search Crunchyroll by exact title. Check the series, season, and region rather than assuming that a Funimation title is either completely gone or completely preserved.
- Check the available audio and subtitle tracks. A migrated title may not have the same dub, subtitle, or extras you used on Funimation.
- Do not wait for old Digital Copies to reappear. The current official guidance says they are unsupported and unavailable.
- Locate your original discs. If a show is important to you, verify that the DVD or Blu-ray is readable and that you have a compatible, region-appropriate player.
- Contact Crunchyroll support about account or billing questions. The official support material discusses contacting support regarding refund options, but it does not announce a universal refund, replacement code, compensation program, or Digital Copy restoration.
- Document important purchases for the future. Keep receipts, edition details, redemption codes, and a personal list of the titles you own. This cannot recreate a discontinued entitlement, but it makes it easier to identify the exact physical release you need.
Is buying a Blu-ray or DVD the best replacement?
If your goal is to regain the exact old Funimation Digital Copy, no physical purchase can restore that discontinued entitlement. Buying another disc is not a technical workaround and should not be marketed as one.

If your goal is to retain reliable access to a particular anime without depending exclusively on a streaming catalog, physical media is a reasonable alternative. Look for the specific title’s anime Blu-ray box set, complete-series release, DVD collection, or collector’s edition. Crunchyroll’s current home-video store lists Blu-rays, DVDs, SteelBooks, box sets, and other physical releases, although availability and regional suitability must be checked before purchase.
A disc purchase can be especially sensible when:
- the series is a long-term favorite;
- the title has changed streaming services repeatedly;
- you need a particular dub or subtitle track;
- the release includes extras unavailable on streaming; or
- you want access that does not depend on maintaining one subscription.
It is less sensible when the edition is heavily overpriced, region-incompatible, missing the language track you need, or likely to be replaced by a better release. Compare the exact edition, format, region, audio, subtitles, and included extras—not just the series name.
DVD, Blu-ray, 4K, or SteelBook?
There is no universally best format. The right choice depends on your equipment, budget, and what you are trying to preserve.
- DVD: Often the least expensive route for older releases and a practical option when high-definition quality is not essential. Confirm the region and whether the set contains every season.
- Blu-ray: Usually the strongest general-purpose choice for modern home viewing, with better picture quality and many complete-series or box-set options.
- 4K Blu-ray: A premium format for compatible equipment. Do not assume that every anime title has a native 4K presentation or that a 4K disc will play in a standard Blu-ray player.
- SteelBook or limited edition: Attractive for collectors and often bundled with extras, but typically more expensive and sometimes more vulnerable to limited availability.
For a lower-cost or older release, an anime DVD collection may be worth comparing with a Blu-ray set. For collectors, a 4K anime Blu-ray or anime SteelBook can be appealing, but premium packaging does not by itself provide better licensing protection or restore a lost digital copy.
The larger lesson about digital ownership
Funimation’s closure demonstrates a problem that extends beyond anime. Consumers often use the word “own” for several different arrangements:
- a physical disc in their possession;
- a subscription that permits streaming while the service and license continue;
- a digital purchase hosted by a retailer; or
- a bonus digital entitlement bundled with a physical product.
These arrangements have different failure points. A streaming subscription can lose a title when licensing changes. A digital storefront can change its applications or authentication system. A bonus copy can disappear when the platform that issued it closes. Physical media can be damaged, become obsolete, or require compatible hardware—but it is not dependent on a remote account remaining active.

This does not make physical media invulnerable, and it does not mean every disc release is permanently available or legally identical across countries. It does mean that a streaming or bundled digital benefit should be treated as continued access under stated platform conditions, not as an unconditional substitute for a physical copy.

- Separate favorites from casual viewing. Subscribe for breadth, but consider physical editions for titles you would regret losing.
- Check the exact release. Confirm region, season coverage, dub, subtitles, extras, and whether the set is complete.
- Keep the physical media and packaging together. Codes, inserts, edition information, and disc identifiers can matter later.
- Do not rely on one catalog. A title appearing on a service today does not establish permanent availability.
- Maintain a personal inventory. A spreadsheet or catalog can record the format and edition you own without depending on a platform’s watch history.
- Read digital-copy terms before buying. A bundled code or entitlement may depend on an account, a redemption deadline, a territory, or a service that can change.
For current physical releases, the official anime Blu-rays collection is one place to compare available editions. Availability changes, and the store listing does not guarantee that a particular title will remain in stock or that it is suitable for every country.

Bottom line
Funimation is not still shutting down; it shut down on April 2, 2024. The service’s streaming catalog was largely redirected to Crunchyroll, but not every title, season, dub, extra, or regional version should be assumed to have moved. The sharper loss was Funimation Digital Copies: digital content bundled with certain physical purchases that Crunchyroll says it does not support and will not make available.
If you still own the original DVD or Blu-ray, keep it. If a favorite title is available in a suitable physical edition, that can provide a more durable access strategy—but it does not restore the old digital entitlement. The safest conclusion is not that all streaming libraries are worthless, but that platform access, bundled digital benefits, and physical ownership are different things.

Will Crunchyroll refund my old Funimation purchases?
The official support material says customers can contact support regarding refund options, but it does not announce a universal refund, replacement code, compensation program, or restoration of Digital Copies.
The Bottom Line
Funimation’s streaming service ended, but its entire catalog was not simply erased. Most streaming content moved to Crunchyroll; Funimation Digital Copies did not. If a title matters to you, verify it on Crunchyroll and consider a compatible physical release—but do not mistake a new disc for restoration of the old digital entitlement.
