These seven literary moments range from a Breguet in Pushkin to a digital-watch gag in Douglas Adams. They are selected for what the timepiece reveals about the character or the story—not as a ranking of the books themselves.
1. James Bond’s Rolex in Casino Royale (1953)
Ian Fleming gives Bond a Rolex, a detail that helps build the image of a man attentive to status and presentation. The novel does not establish a specific model. The Explorer 1016 is often assumed, but that identification should not be treated as confirmed by the text.

2. Red Grant’s gold Girard-Perregaux in From Russia with Love (1956)
Grant’s described gold Girard-Perregaux, with calendar and moon-phase features, is an unusually conspicuous detail. Alongside his conduct, the watch helps characterize him as vain: it draws attention to the luxury he wears as well as the person wearing it.
3. The inherited Heuer in Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage
Tsukuru inherits his father’s 1960s Heuer. Its weight and mechanical sound make it more than an accessory; as Tsukuru grows attached to it, the watch becomes a tangible connection to his father and a carrier of memory.

4. Pushkin’s Breguet in Eugene Onegin (1833)
In Alexander Pushkin’s poem, a Breguet marks midday for Eugene, an idle and privileged protagonist. The clock’s signal does not introduce a pressing appointment so much as underline a life with time to spare. The watch reference reinforces the poem’s association of leisure with ennui.
5. The digital-watch joke in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (1979)
Douglas Adams uses a digital-watch gag to make a comic contrast between the vastness of the cosmos and the human fascination with technology. The joke works because an ordinary device becomes a measure of how people focus on small, familiar things amid the enormous and strange.
6. Hidden beauty in Warm Bodies (2010)
Isaac Marion turns a timepiece’s hidden jeweled workings into an image of beauty beneath the surface. The watch’s appeal lies not only in what can be seen at a glance, but in the intricate mechanism concealed inside—a useful metaphor for looking beyond appearances.
7. The heart as a Rolex in Across the River and into the Trees (1950)
Ernest Hemingway’s Colonel Cantwell compares the heart’s function to a Rolex Oyster Perpetual, then recognizes the limit of the comparison: a heart cannot be sent away for repair. The watch reference sharpens the scene’s tension between mechanical reliability and Cantwell’s failing health.

What these watch references do
Across these works, the timepiece serves several different literary purposes: it can mark status, reveal vanity, connect a character to family, embody leisure, prompt comedy, suggest hidden complexity or make illness feel more immediate. The objects are memorable not simply because they are named, but because each is tied to a character or idea.
The level of identification varies. Some passages name a brand, some describe an era or features, and Bond’s Rolex remains model-uncertain. The descriptions here follow the literary references as discussed by Luke Benedictus in Time+Tide’s 24 May 2020 article; exact wording and pagination can vary by edition, so consult the relevant book edition when quoting a passage directly.
