Bailey Spalding says Guy Sebastian urged The X Factor team to keep her in the competition in 2016: “He always used to be like ‘keep Bailey in, keep Bailey in’.” Spalding shared the recollection in a 2023 PerthNow interview, alongside the story of how she went from auditioning for the singing group Hi-5 to acting on television.
What did Guy Sebastian say to Bailey Spalding?
Recalling her time on The X Factor, Spalding described Sebastian as “a big pusher for me” and remembered him saying, “keep Bailey in, keep Bailey in.” The words are Spalding’s account of his encouragement, as reported by PerthNow; they are not a separately verified transcript or a direct interview with Sebastian.

How far did she get on The X Factor?
Spalding said she went to audition with her mother on a last-minute whim. She passed the three-seat challenge but narrowly missed a place in the Top 12. Her account makes Sebastian’s encouragement part of a competition story that ended just short of the live-show lineup, rather than a claim that she went on to win or reach the final stages.
How did Bailey Spalding join Hi-5?
After The X Factor, Spalding’s agent told her that Hi-5 was auditioning for a new cast. She had loved the children’s group growing up and described joining it as a childhood dream. At 19, she made it through a four-day audition and performed with Hi-5 until 2018, according to the PerthNow profile.
#1 Best Overall
A December 2016 report by The West Australian said Spalding, who was raised in Fremantle, was among 450 hopefuls auditioning for the newly opened lineup. The report also said she had relocated to Sydney after being cast. The 450 figure is that newspaper’s reported count; the article does not identify a statistical body behind it.
What does “from Hi-5 to Hollywood” mean?
The phrase points to Spalding’s ambition, not a reported move to Hollywood or Los Angeles. In the 2023 interview, she said, “I think my next step might be overseas. I’d like to move to LA,” adding, “Dream big — why not?” The interview presents Los Angeles as a possibility she was considering at the time.

What acting work did she do after Hi-5?
PerthNow reported that Spalding had been cast as Sophie Chalcott in Channel 10 drama North Shore. She spoke about working on the show alongside her boyfriend, who had also booked a role, and praised the cast, including Dan Spielman.
Later coverage adds career context. In an interview with The Curb, Spalding discussed how filming with Hi-5 helped her recognize her interest in acting and mentioned training at WAAPA. A later profile in The West Australian covered her feature-film role in Penny Lane Is Dead and revisited her earlier X Factor and Hi-5 experience.
