At the end of Friends, Ross and Rachel reunite after Rachel gets off the plane to Paris; Monica and Chandler leave Manhattan to start family life with their adopted twins; Phoebe is married to Mike; and Joey heads west to pursue acting. The six friends then leave Monica and Chandler’s empty apartment and go to Central Perk for one last coffee. The two-part 2004 finale settles those immediate storylines, not the characters’ entire later lives.
Do Ross and Rachel get back together?
Yes. Rachel is about to move to Paris for a job when Ross realizes he wants her to stay. She initially boards the plane, but gets off and returns to him. Their reunion gives the series’ long-running relationship a clear resolution.
Co-creator and finale writer David Crane said the writers considered ending on the more ambiguous idea that there was “hope for the future,” but decided that after ten years of waiting, viewers deserved a definite payoff. ABC News quoted Crane on October 24, 2012.

What is the last scene of Friends?
After leaving Monica and Chandler’s apartment, the six friends leave its key behind and head to Central Perk for one last coffee. The apartment departure closes the shared-home chapter; the return to their familiar coffee-shop ritual leaves their friendship open-ended. The latter is an interpretation of the scene’s staging, rather than a stated account of what happens next.
Why does the series end with the apartment?
Co-creator Marta Kauffman described the show as being about the period when friends function as family, before the characters begin having families of their own and the group dynamic changes. She said the creators knew the series should end with the friends leaving Monica and Chandler’s apartment. Kauffman discussed the ending with the Television Academy on May 6, 2024.

That perspective helps explain why the finale’s final image is not a comprehensive look at everyone’s future. It marks the end of this particular chapter in their lives.

Published figures differ and should not be treated as interchangeable. The Television Academy’s 2024 retrospective reports 52.5 million viewers for the finale and ranks it fifth among U.S. series finales. A 2004 Associated Press report carried by CBS cited a preliminary Nielsen Media Research estimate of 51.1 million viewers. The AP report also described an America Online poll in which 77 percent of more than 30,000 respondents called rekindling Ross and Rachel’s romance the perfect ending. That was an opt-in online poll, not a representative survey of viewers.
