Freakier Friday’s North American opening weekend in August 2025 produced a domestic opening of $28,583,167, according to Box Office Mojo. The Associated Press, reporting that weekend as it happened, rounded the result to $29 million from 3,975 theaters and said the film took second place. The reported worldwide gross now stands at $153,176,952. Those figures describe a strong theatrical result. They do not, on their own, prove that the film completes Lindsay Lohan’s career comeback, because “comeback” is a judgment about a whole career and box-office totals measure something narrower.
The opening weekend, figure by figure
Two opening figures circulate, and they answer slightly different questions. The exact number is a database figure. The rounded number is a contemporaneous news estimate.

The AP’s account of the weekend reads:
“‘Freakier Friday,’ Disney’s chaotic sequel to the 2003 classic, ‘Freaky Friday,’ took the second spot during its premiere weekend, earning $29 million in 3,975 North American theaters.”
That sentence is AP reporting rather than a quotation from a named speaker, so it describes the outcome without attributing a view to anyone.
#1 Best Overall
- Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reprise their roles in this hilarious sequel. Tess?s daughter Anna now has a daughter of her own and soon, a stepdaughter. As they navigate the joys and challenges when two families merge, lightning just may strike twice.
What “massive” can and cannot mean here
“Massive” is a relative word. A fair reading needs a stated benchmark, such as the original 2003 film, a release from the same weekend, or the studio’s own expectations, and each benchmark needs a stated territory and period. This article does not rank the opening against every 2025 release, because no verified ranking was established. The opening is best described as sizable for a mid-summer sequel, with the comparison left to the reader’s chosen benchmark.
Lifetime gross: domestic and international
A film’s opening weekend and its lifetime total are different measurements. The lifetime figures below are the reported totals on Box Office Mojo’s title page. The Numbers lists the same totals.
| Territory | Reported gross | Share of worldwide total |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic (United States and Canada) | $94,186,236 | About 61.5% |
| International | $58,990,716 | About 38.5% |
| Worldwide | $153,176,952 | 100% |
Shares are calculated from the reported totals in the table. The domestic opening of $28,583,167 equals roughly 30% of the domestic lifetime gross, which shows how much of the run came after the first weekend. The worldwide total accumulated over the film’s whole theatrical run; it was not earned on opening weekend.
What the numbers do not establish
- Profit. The Numbers lists a $42,000,000 production budget. That is a database figure, not an official studio statement. Dividing worldwide gross by that budget gives about 3.6, but this is arithmetic, not profit. The comparison leaves out marketing, distribution costs and the share of ticket revenue that theaters keep.
- Studio revenue. Box-office figures are gross ticket receipts. The studio receives only a portion of them after theaters take their cut, so these totals are not studio income.
- A ranking. The available reporting does not establish where the opening sits among all 2025 releases.
- Audience and critical response. The reported grosses say nothing about who bought tickets, how audiences rated the film or how reviewers received it.
Reading the comeback claim
The factual part of the headline is solid: Lindsay Lohan returned as a lead in a Disney theatrical sequel, and the film earned a sizable reported gross. The interpretive part is “completes.” No standard metric defines when a career comeback is finished, and a single film’s opening cannot settle a question that depends on years of earlier work, her later choices, critical reception and whatever roles follow.
Rank #2
A defensible reading is that the opening is evidence of renewed commercial pull for Lohan in a headline role. It is not evidence that her career story has ended, or that the comeback is complete.
