It is worth watching if you want a loud, broad comedy built on a familiar twin-swap template, with a nostalgic link to the 1997 original. Critics were mostly unimpressed, so the film’s appeal depends on whether its jokes and rhythm work for you. The double role is the main reason to see it, but the published reviews do not establish that Dhawan’s performance stands out.

What the film is about
Raja and Prem are twins who are separated early and raised in different circumstances. The story moves them toward a reunion and then toward a fight against a smuggling ring. The Apple TV synopsis places the mistaken-identity confusion that drives much of the comedy in Mumbai and London. The premise is conventional for the genre: the fun is in how the brothers’ differences are exposed, swapped and misread, rather than in any surprising plot turn.
Varun Dhawan and the double role
Two characters, one premise
Playing twins is the film’s central gimmick, and it is the reason the cast list reads the way it does. Dhawan is the lead in both roles, so the film asks him to carry most of the comic and emotional weight on his own. Because the plot is thin by design, the characters are expected to do the heavy lifting: they need to feel like two separate people, not one actor in a wig and a different jacket.
What to look for in the performance
If you watch the film, these are the checks that show whether a double role works:

#1 Best Overall
- Distinct physicality. Do posture, gait and gesture change between Raja and Prem, or only the costume?
- Separate speech patterns. Do the two brothers have different rhythms and reactions when they talk, or does their dialogue blur together?
- Comic timing in each role. Does each character get laughs from their own behaviour, or only from the confusion between them?
- Moments of shared screen time. Are the split-screen or double-exposure scenes convincing enough that the joke lands rather than distracts?
The sources confirm that Dhawan plays both roles. They do not settle how well he separates the two characters, so treat any claim that he “shines” as a judgment you should test against these checks.
How it compares with the 1997 Judwaa
Judwaa 2 is described as a reboot of the 1997 Judwaa, and the Apple TV listing presents the reunion of the pairing after 20 years as the hook. That establishes the relationship between the films. It does not establish how much of the original’s plot, jokes or structure carries over, so the comparison below is organised around what you should check rather than a verdict.
| Comparison point | What to check | What current evidence settles |
|---|---|---|
| Updating the twin premise | How the separation, reunion and mistaken identity are adapted for a 2017 setting | The film is a reboot of the 1997 original; the specific changes are not established by the sources. |
| The double-role performance | Whether the two brothers are distinct comic personalities | Not established by the sources. |
| Jokes and pacing | Whether set-ups and punchlines land and hold across the runtime | Critics question the delivery and direction (see below); scene-level comparison with the original is not established. |
| References to the earlier film | Whether nods to the 1997 film serve the story or mainly invite nostalgia | One critic reads the film as leaning on nostalgia for the 1990s comedy; this is one view, not a consensus. |
What critics said
Rotten Tomatoes showed 38% from 13 reviews when accessed in 2026. That figure is a review aggregate, not an audience score or a box-office measure, and it changes as reviews are added. Two reviews carried on the same page stand out:
- Rahul Desai, Film Companion (dated 1 March 2019): argues that a comedy with a thin plot depends on sharp lines delivered with the right rhythm, and faults the delivery and direction. The Rotten Tomatoes text of this review is malformed, so check the original before quoting it directly.
- Namrata Joshi (dated 10 July 2018): says Dhawan draws on nostalgia for the 1990s comedy being rebooted.
Read together, these reviews point to the same weak spot: a film that relies on a familiar template and on the energy of its delivery. Neither review, as displayed, is a reliable guide to how the film plays for a general audience.

Who the broad humour will suit
The film’s comedy is broad and built on confusion, exaggeration and recognisable comic types. Whether that works for you depends on what you expect from it.
- It is likely to suit you if you enjoy twin-swap farce, don’t mind a thin plot, and like comedies that lean on energy and repetition.
- It may frustrate you if you want tight writing, subtle character comedy, or a plot that drives the jokes rather than the other way round.
- It will matter more if you already know the 1997 original, since the nostalgic hooks are part of the pitch.
Content and classification
The UK cinema version is rated BBFC 12A. The BBFC notes moderate stylised violence, moderate sex references, mild language and a passing reference to a drug cartel. This classification applies to the UK cinema version only; ratings for other countries or for home releases may differ and are not established here.

Apple TV has a digital listing in the US storefront with Hindi audio and English subtitles. That listing shows the film is available there at the time it was checked. It does not establish availability, pricing or subtitle options in other countries, and it does not establish a current physical disc release.
The Bottom Line
Judwaa 2 is a watchable, broad comedy for viewers who enjoy twin-swap farce and don’t need a strong plot. Varun Dhawan carries the film through both roles, but the reviews cited here are largely negative about the delivery and direction, and nothing in them confirms that the double role is a standout performance. Judge it on the performance checks above, and expect the nostalgia to matter more if you already know the 1997 Judwaa.
