The reunion is a clear source of charm, but the four-person switch also makes the sequel busier than its predecessor. The critical question is whether that added complexity brings a fresh perspective or mostly adds complications to a familiar setup.
What is Freakier Friday about?
Disney’s 2025 sequel to Freaky Friday reunites Curtis and Lohan as Tess and Anna, 22 years after their characters’ first body swap. Anna is now a mother to Harper and is preparing to blend her family with that of her fiancé, Eric, whose daughter is Lily. A new swap draws Tess, Anna, Harper, and Lily into the story’s generational comedy.
The film is directed by Nisha Ganatra, with a screenplay by Jordan Weiss and a story by Weiss and Elyse Hollander. It is based on Mary Rodgers’s book Freaky Friday. The sequel’s family setup gives the old premise a natural new pressure point: the adults and children must navigate not just one another’s habits, but a household that is still becoming a family.
Does the sequel make the body-swap idea feel new?
The four-way switch offers more combinations of characters to play against one another, and it makes the generational perspective-shifting central to the premise. But more moving parts do not automatically mean more comic insight. The expanded setup can also make the plot feel crowded, particularly when the film is working through the familiar business of people learning to inhabit someone else’s life.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That tension is reflected in the two reviews considered here. Associated Press critic Jocelyn Noveck describes the reunion as “amiable, often joyful and certainly chaotic,” while arguing that the sequel tracks the original too closely and pushes its complications too far. Noveck writes: “The comedy is thus a bit more manic, and the plot machinations more overwrought (or sometimes distractingly silly).” TIME’s review reaches a similar concern about the four-way swap, characterizing it as a case where “more is less.” These are the critics’ judgments, not a measure of audience response.
Why Curtis and Lohan’s reunion matters
The sequel’s strongest built-in appeal is the chance to see Curtis and Lohan return to Tess and Anna. Their reunion connects the new story to the 2003 film, while Anna’s role as a parent shifts the family dynamic forward: she is no longer only the daughter at the center of a mother-daughter clash. The next generation gives the premise a reason to revisit perspective-taking rather than simply repeat the original pair’s conflict.

Nostalgia is part of that appeal, but it is not evidence that every viewer wanted a sequel, nor does recognition alone make the story fresh. The useful test is whether Tess and Anna’s changed circumstances—and the addition of Harper and Lily—create meaningful new points of view. The critical responses suggest the film’s warmth and star reunion land more readily than its increasingly intricate plot.
Is Freakier Friday worth watching?
If Curtis and Lohan’s return is the main draw, the sequel offers an amiable, energetic reunion and another dose of identity-switch comedy. Viewers looking for a tighter story or a substantial departure from the original may find the extra swap participants make the familiar formula more hectic than inventive. On the available critical evidence, this is best approached as a cheerful return to the characters, not as a reinvention of the premise.
