Frances Haugen is back in the public conversation as her account helps shape The Social Reckoning, an Aaron Sorkin dramatic film inspired by true events. It is not a documentary. The documentary in this story is CNN’s separate Zuckerberg: Facebook and the Cost of Connection, a FlashDoc about Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, and the platform’s effects on society. Keeping the two productions distinct matters: they tell different kinds of stories and have different release paths.

Why Frances Haugen is back in the public eye

Haugen, a former Facebook product manager, became a prominent critic of the company’s product and safety decisions after making disclosures in 2021 and testifying before the U.S. Senate. In that testimony, she said she had worked as a product manager at major technology companies since 2006, including Google, Pinterest, Yelp, and Facebook, with experience in algorithmic products and recommendation systems. She alleged that Facebook’s products harmed children, stoked division, and weakened democracy; those are claims she made in testimony, not neutral findings established by the fact of her appearance.

Haugen said, “I came forward because I believe that every human being deserves the dignity of the truth.” Her testimony is a primary source for what she said and believed about the company and her decision to speak publicly. Read her Senate statement.

In an October 8, 2026 interview with ABC News, Haugen discussed how her 2023 memoir, The Power of One, was used in creating the new film. The memoir offers Haugen’s own account and a route into her perspective; its use in a dramatization does not independently corroborate every scene or event shown onscreen. What is The Social Reckoning about?

The Social Reckoning is Sony’s Aaron Sorkin dramatic film inspired by true events, centered on Haugen and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz. Mikey Madison plays Haugen, and Jeremy Allen White plays Horwitz. Sony presents it as a dramatic screenplay, not as a documentary. See Sony’s official film page.

Haugen’s memoir is part of the film’s source material, according to her ABC News interview. For a documentary audience, that connection is useful context, but the film remains a dramatization: it should not be treated as a documentary record or as independent confirmation of the memoir.

Which production is the documentary?

CNN’s Zuckerberg: Facebook and the Cost of Connection is the distinct documentary production. CNN calls it a FlashDoc and says it examines Facebook’s and Zuckerberg’s effects on connection, culture, politics, and communication. CNN framed the central question as whether Zuckerberg “succeeded in bringing the world closer together or pushed us farther apart.” That is CNN’s framing of the subject, not a quotation from Haugen.

CNN announced streaming from September 30, 2026, followed by a CNN broadcast premiere on October 4, 2026. Those are the release plans CNN announced; availability beyond those dates or outside the relevant territory may vary. Read CNN’s announcement.

How the two screen works differ

Production Format Focus Release information
The Social Reckoning Aaron Sorkin dramatic film inspired by true events; Sony’s official page identifies Mikey Madison as Haugen and Jeremy Allen White as Jeff Horwitz. Haugen and journalist Jeff Horwitz. Sony’s official page promotes tickets. Sony Austria lists an October 9, 2026 opening specifically for Austria; that date should not be generalized internationally. In short, look to The Social Reckoning for a dramatized story focused on Haugen and Horwitz; look to CNN’s FlashDoc for a documentary examination of Zuckerberg, Facebook, and the platform’s broader social effects. A release announcement does not establish current access in every country or on every service.

The Power of One, Haugen’s 2023 memoir, is the most direct next step for readers who want her own account. ABC News reported that it was used in making The Social Reckoning. A separate account in The Credits describes Sorkin’s meeting with Haugen and the development of the story. Read Sorkin’s account in The Credits.

For additional recent context, EL PAÍS reported on May 31, 2026, that Haugen left Facebook with 21,000 internal documents. That is the figure reported by the publication, rather than an independently verified count established by the primary materials cited here. Read the EL PAÍS profile.
